The regional newspaper Le Méridional for September 30, 1954, reported among other observations, that near Feyzin in the department of Isère, a young man reportedly saw in the countryside, not far from the ground, a dome-shaped craft from which a very bright light gushed forth. The witness compared it to that caused by the burning of magnesium. The craft, suddenly, climbed vertically leaving a shower of sparks, and "disappeared."
The regional newspaper Var-Matin République for the same September 30, 1954, told a little more: the witness was, "Mr. Roland M ...", 15, who told:
"On the 15th around 11 p.m., I was about 200 meters from the Feyzin fort when my attention was drawn to a white light, and then I was amazed to see, standing out in the sky, about ten meters from the ground, a dark spot from which emerged a bright light similar to the burning of a magnesium stain."
"The black 'shape' seemed slightly elliptical."
"Arriving about fifty meters from this 'spaceship', I was amazed to hear a dull sound like that made by a wet rocket, I even saw at the same time a shower of sparks from the bottom of the machine, then suddenly, like a rocket, it rose at a blazing speed, perhaps 4000 or 5000 km / h."
The pioneering ufologist Jimmy Guieu gave in his 1956 book "Black Out on the Flying Saucers", this quote - without source - of the witness "Roland M.", of September 15, 1954, at 11:30, that he said was 19-year-old:
"I was riding a bicycle on the small road that connects the Begude district to Feyzin, towards the village of Corbas, I was about 200 meters from the Port of Feyzin when, suddenly, my attention was drawn to a white light which, for a moment, swept away and cut the road, stopping and looking at the light that had come to a standstill, I was surprised to see, standing out in the sky, about ten meters away from the ground, a dark spot surmounted by a dome from which emerged a bright light similar to the combustion of magnesium. The black 'shape' seemed slightly elliptical. Once arrived at about fifty meters from this 'spaceship', I was surprised to hear a dull sound, like that made by a rocket of the 14th of July, and at the same time I saw a shower of sparks bursting from under the apparatus, then suddenly like a rocket, it rose at a blazing speed and disappeared."
Then in 1958, Aimé Michel quotes "Roland M.," now 19-year-old:
"On the 15th, I was riding a motorcycle between La Bégude and Corbas, on the vicinal road V 02. I was about 200 meters from the Feyzin fort when suddenly a white light coming from the sky swept the road by cutting it. I stopped and looked at the light that had stopped."
"I found out that it came from above a dark mass about 10 meters above the ground, 50 meters from me, the black mass seemed elliptical, I looked for a moment, then heard a slight noise like a wet rocket, sparks spurted under the aircraft, which rose at a blazing speed, it was 11:20 a.m."
The ufologists Charles Garreau and Raymond Lavier's version of 1974 is quite surprising: according to them, Roland M. had a first sighting on September 15, 1954, and another in June 1956: "Mr. Roland", now "21-year-old", went to work and was between Corbas and Fort Feyzin in the Rhone when he saw on his left a very bright object, of metallic appearance, posed on the ground. Elliptical in shape, it looked like a "miner's hat."
Mr. Roland watched it for a few minutes without going closer. He then saw a being "the size of a 9-year-old child, dressed in a kind of gray diving suit. He had a big head resting on broad shoulders, moved without hurry in front of the machine, then disappeared behind it."
A few seconds later, the craft rose silently, spiraling.
Mr. Roland reportedly said he had difficulty pedaling when he hit the road again.
Many other ufologists would still publish short summaries, but never based on Garreau and Lavier's "close encounter of the third kind" version.
In 1979, "skeptical" ufologists Gérard Barthel and Jacques Brucker published in a Belgian ufology magazine the summary of the case by Vallée, then told that the March 1970 issue of Lumières Dans La Nuit ufology magazine, and their correspondent, Madame Lefebvre, told that this witness saw two years later, 600 meters away, the landing of an object with presence of occupants; which make them disbelieve him as a "repeater". Barthel and Brucker said they a searched for Roland M..., and he had never saw anything, neither in 1954 nor in 1956. He attributes, they say, these two stories to tall-tales of journalists.

We are no longer surprised by the statements of witnesses, who allegedly saw Flying Saucers in the sky, or Flying Cigars.
There are many pranksters and their imaginations are fertile.
Despite everything, some testimonies, cannot be doubted and it therefore seems that there is a side of truth, both in all these collective... or individual hallucinations.
Thus, for a few weeks now, appearances of bizarre craft in the skies of France have been more and more numerous and more and more curious. See for yourselves:
IN THE LYON REGION
A ROCKET MOVED
AT A VERTIGINOUS SPEED
A 19-year-old young man, Mr. Roland Marchand, made the following statement to the gendarmes:
- Around 11 p.m. on the 15th, I was about 200 meters from Fort Feyson (Isère), when my attention was drawn by a white light. I was then amazed to see standing out in the sky, about ten meters above the ground, a dark spot, surmounted by a dome from which emerged a bright light similar to the combustion of a magnesium torch.
The black "shape" appeared to be slightly elliptical.
"Arrived about fifty meters from this 'space ship', I was amazed to hear a dull sound like that made by a wet rocket. I saw at the same time a shower of sparks shoot up from below the craft. Then suddenly, like a rocket, it rose at a blazing speed, perhaps 4,000 or 5,000 km.-h.
FLYING SAUCERS
IN PARIS
Yesterday morning, Mrs. Mallet and Miss Lucienne Yriex, 71 route de Daumont, in Montmorency, stated that they had seen the day before, at 5 p.m. a yellow oval craft, accompanied by a luminous trail and swaying from right to left.
Mr. Hébert, butcher, avenue de la liberation, in Petit-Clamart, saw the same phenomenon, at 9 p.m., moving from east to west.
LUMINOUS OBJECTS
IN THE SKY
OF THE ROUSSILLON
A baker from Canet-Plage, Mr. Etienne Err, declared that upon returning from a delivery round with his van, he had seen above this locality a shining disc, which, after having flown in large circles, moved away in the direction of the sea.
Also, seven workers in a factory in the suburbs of Perpignan claim to have also seen an object of an indefinite color, evolving at high speed and which would have crossed the Pyrenees towards Spain.
A FLYING CIGAR
WAS ALLEGEDLY FILMED
Mr. Valéry, director of an auditorium, in Paris, who was traveling to Lyon with his wife, said he saw a flyind [sic] machine.
- It was around 6 p.m. We were walking around when we saw this craft, at about 700 or 800 meters above the ground and it was climbing, vertically without making the slightest sound of an engine.
Behind it left a wide trail of white smoke.
It could not be, in my opinion, a jet plane, of which I would have heard the hissing, because of the proximity of the craft.
Besides, this cigar didn't have the shape [of a jet plane].
Mr. Valéry was carrying an 8mm camera. He hastened to film the moves of the aerial object.
A film, which could undoubtedly be of real value, if Mr. Valéry really saw the strange craft.
MARTIANS
ON EARTH
If one can conceive even with some reluctance, the presence in the sky, of luminous objects which can

well be fireballs, the statements of certain witnesses having indeed seen strange individuals, Martians, for example, are otherwise questionable.
This is how a female resident of Chabeuil, in the Drôme, most seriously in the world, came to declare that she had met in a certain field, something that looked like a kid locked in a cellophane bag... It is claimed that after this meeting, she had to go to bed with a fever of 40°C... That is understandable.
Even better, is the encounter, made by Mr. Yves David, 28, farmer in Les Brouloux, commune of Vouneuil-sur-Vienne, who stated he had seen advancing on him, on the road from Cenon to Vouneuil, on September 19, at 10 p.m. a sort of diver. The latter, he said, came to stroke his arm, emitted incomprehensible sounds and withdrew towards a craft which Mr. David cannot describe. A green light beam was projected in its direction, pinning him on the spot, then the craft disappeared in the sky, vertically, without any noise.
Mr. David states that he initially did not want to say anything about this bizarre encounter, for fear that he would be laughed at. However, he shared it with a friend asking him whether other people had seen the diver. This is how the whole country knew about it.

LYON. -- In the departments of the Rhone, Isère, Drôme and Savoy, many people claim to have seen, these last days, with more or less clarity, craft having either the shape of cigars, or those of discs.
In the area of Arbresle, one of these witnesses, director of a music-hall, stated to have filmed one of these mysterious apparatuses which evolved at a height estimated by him as of approximately 700 meters. One will thus know, after development of the footage, if it was or was not an optical illusion.
Close to Feyzin (the Isère) a young man is said to have seen in the countryside, not far from the ground, a machine having the shape of a dome from where spouted out a very sharp light. The witness had compared it with that caused by the combustion of magnesium. The craft, suddenly, went up vertically while leaving a shower of sparks and disappeared.
Inhabitants of Chabeuil stated to have seen a flying saucer evolving above the countryside.
Lastly, in Savoy, close to the lake of Le Bourget, above Mount Revard, several motorists, on the whole about fifteen people, simultaneously saw an apparatus having the shape of a disc, that evolved during approximately four minutes, to then disappear suddenly.
One of the witnesses, a doctor of Chambéry, is a former artillery observer. He carefully wrote up the observations and drew a diagram reproducing the travel of the mysterious apparatus.
REDON (Ille-et-Vilaine). -- Misters Gérard, mechanic, and Paroux, driver, who operated a wildcat engine coming from Nantes, saw, whereas they passed at the locality "La Butte Rouge", community of Saint-Nicolas-de-Besson (Ille-et-Vilaine), a machine which rose from the nearby marshes.
This craft, of a certain length, which was followed of a luminous trail, flew during ten second above the machine and disappeared in the sky.
While the mechanic preserved all his calm, the driver, on the other hand, was so frightened that he fell sick and had to pass a medical examination yesterday morning.
LA HAYE. -- The aerial phenomena which currently appear above Europe did not fail to visit the Netherlands.
Among the recently reported testimonies on the passage of flying saucers above the Dutch territory, it is necessary to quote that of a citizen of Schiedam (an important center of juniper production) which claimed to have seen a rather large object, circular and luminous, moving towards the west. Its fiancée who accompanied it corroborated his statements.
Less recent but more impressive, is the account of the captain of "Grote Beer" Mr J.-P. Boshoff, of the Holland - United States line.
The object detected on the open sea and observed by himself and his five officers using all the optical equipment on board, was the "size of a half-moon" and also circular and luminous.
The captain adamantly excluded the possibility that it can be a weather balloon.
Initially motionless, the disc, after a few moments, moved towards the west to disappear behind the clouds at an altitude of approximately 14.000 meters.

After being visible for thirty to forty seconds, the luminous disc disappeared on the horizon.

LYON - In the Rhône. Isère, Drôme and Savoy departments, many people claim to have seen, these last days, with more or less sharpness, craft having either the shape of cigars or that of disks.
In the region of the Arbresle, one of these witnesses, director of a Paris music hall, even filmed one of these mysterious craft that was evolving at a height estimated by him at about 700 meters, so we will know, after development of the film, whether or not it is an optical illusion.
Near Fezin [sic] (Isère) a young man reportedly saw a dome-shaped craft in the countryside, not far from the ground from where a very bright light sprang up. The witness compared it to that caused by the burning of magnesium. The craft suddenly climbed vertically leaving behind a shower of sparks and disappeared.
In the Drôme, a resident of Valence, Mrs. L ... who was walking near Chabeuil, said to have met in the path she followed a being of small size who was dressed so oddly that she thought at first that it was a cellophane scarecrow. The dog that accompanied the walker barked furiously, in terror. As for Mrs. L..., also terrified, she hid behind a hedge.
It was then that she saw a disk rising from the cornfield along the road, whistling. Shortly thereafter, the witness and some peasants went to the field where, according to them, there was clearly a circular trace of about 3 meters in diameter with corn stalks laid down and broken branches on the edge.

Other residents of Chabeuil also said they saw a flying saucer flying over the countryside that day.
Finally, in Savoy, near the Lake of the Bourget, above Mount Revard, several motorists, in total about fifteen people, saw simultaneously a craft having the shape of a disc, moving for about four minutes, then disappearing suddenly.
One of the witnesses, a doctor from Chambéry, is a former artillery observer. He carefully noted the observations and drew a diagram reproducing the path of the mysterious apparatus.
Mr. Yves David, 28, farmer at the Brouloux, municipality of Vouneuil-sur-Vienne (Vienne) said he saw advance at him on the road from Cenon to Vouneuil on September 19 at 10 p.m. a kind of "scuba diver".
The latter, he said, came to caress his arm, uttered unintelligible sounds and withdrew to a craft (which Mr. David cannot describe). A green light beam was projected in his direction, nailing him on the spot, then the craft disappeared vertically in the sky without any noise.
Mr. David declares that he did not want to say anything about this strange encounter, lest anyone scoff at him. He told a friend, however, asking if other people had seen the "scuba diver". This is how the whole country learned about it...
PERPIGNAN - A baker from Cannet-Plage, Mr. Err, said that when he returned from a delivery tour with his pickup truck, he saw above this locality a brilliant disc which, after having flown in large circles, moved towards the sea. Also, seven workers of a factory of the suburb of Perpignan claim to have also seen an object of an indefinite color, moving at high speed, and which would have crossed the Pyrenees towards Spain.
Three inhabitants of Lanta, near Villefranche-de-Lauragais (Haute-Garonne), Mr. and Mrs. Brunet and Mr. Gadra, teacher of the locality, claim to have seen last night, above the village, a luminous disc of orange color. The object was moving at a great height and was moving north south.
After being visible for 30 to 40 seconds, the luminous disc disappeared on the horizon.

THE Martians follow each other and are not alike. In Corrèze, they are small and helmeted. In Portugal, they are gigantic and clad in aluminum.
Schoolchildren in the Lot in turn assure that they saw one yesterday, near Figeac.
The children were on their way to school when it appeared to them.
- He spoke to us, they said, but we didn't understand what he was saying...
Whereupon he went down to a meadow, below the road from Figeac to Cahors. The children saw him climb into a small craft which rose vertically.
- It was a machine that looked like a box, they said.
After the saucers, cigars and flying discs, here is the flying box!
In Vienne, a resident of Montgadé, Mr. Yves David, also encountered, he says, a Martian. It happened on Friday September 17, around 10:30 p.m., on the road from Vouneuil to Cenon when he saw in front of him, placed on the path a bizarre craft about 3 meters wide. A small being descended from it, approached Mr. David and tapped him on the shoulder. After that, he returned to his machine which rose and disappeared, leaving behind a green light.
Saucers are reported everywhere. In Saint-Bazeille (Lot-et-Garonne), two people saw a phosphorescent disc, of bluish tint, crossing the sky. Another, orange in color, was seen in Lanta, near Villefranche-de-Lauraguais. A third, "of an indefinite color", flew over the Perpignan region; seven workers saw it; according to one he went away towards the sea; others say it crossed the Pyrenees.
In the Dauphiné it's a real carousel. Near Feyzin (Isère), it is an object in the shape of a dome; in the Drôme, near Chabeuil, it is a whistling disc. Same thing in Savoy, not far from Bourget Lake, where one of the witnesses, a doctor from Chambéry, former artillery observer, noted his observations and drew a sketch.
In Saint-Nicolas-de-Redon, finally, a mechanic and a driver who drove a locomotive, MM. Gérard and Paroux, see a mysterious object rising from the neighboring marshes. Mr. Paroux fell ill and had to undergo a medical examination.

In the departments of the Rhone, of Isère, Drôme and Savoy, many people claim to have seen, these last days, with more or less of clarity, crafts having either a cigar shape, or a disc shape. In the area of Arbresle, one of these witnesses, the director of a Parisian variety theater, even filmed one of these mysterious crafts. So we will know, after development of the film, if it is an optical illusion. Close to Feyzin (Isère), a young man is said to have seen a machine having a dome and from where a light comparable with that caused by the combustion of magnesium spouted out in the countryside not far from the ground. In the Drôme, an inhabitant of Valence, Miss Leboeuf, which was having a walk near Chabeuil, claims to have met in a pathway, a being of small size oddly dressed which she first believed to be a scarecrow in Cellophane. Miss Leboeuf hid behind a hedge, terrified. At this point in time she saw a disc from where a whistle emanated rising from a cornfield. A little later the witness and peasants went in the field where, according to them, a circular trace approximately three meters in diameter with corn ears lying and branches broken in edge was clearly distinguished. Other inhabitants of Chabeuil also stated to have seen there a flying saucer evolving above the countryside on the same day.

"I was riding a bicycle on the small road which connects the district of Bégude to Feyzin, in the direction of the village of Corbas. I was within approximately 200 meters of the Harbour ["Port", actually "Fort"] of Feyzin when, suddenly, my attention was drawn by a white light which, a while, swept and cut the road. Stopping and looking at the light which had been immobilized, I had the surprise to see, being detached onto the sky, within ten meters of the ground, a dark spot surmounted of a dome from where a sharp light similar to the combustion of magnesium emerged. The black "form" seemed slightly elliptic. Arrived at about fifty meters of this... "space ship", I had the surprise to hear a deaf noise, like that made by a wet 14 July rocket; I saw at the same time a shower of sparks spout out of the lower part of the craft then, all of a sudden, like a rocket, it rose at a striking speed and disappeared."
[Ref. aml1:] AIME MICHEL:
Aimé Michel reports the account of the witness Mr. Roland M..., nineteen years old, of his observation in the community of Feyzin, 5 kilometers in the south of Lyon, on September 15, 1954 at 11:20 P.M.:
"On the 15th, I was driving on my motorcycle between Bégude and Corbas, on the country road V 02. I was at approximately 200 meters of the fort of Feyzin when suddenly a white light coming from the sky swept the road while crossing it. I stopped and looked at the light which had become still."
"I then discovered that it came from the top of a motionless dark mass 10 meters approximately above ground-level, within 50 meters of me. The black mass seemed elliptic. I looked at it one moment, then heard a light noise like a wet rocket. Sparks spouted out under the apparatus, which rose at a tremendous speed. It was 11:20."
Aimé Michel notes that there is no other witness, nor proof of the reality of the account, but that a weak presumption in favor of this single witness was that he wanted to remain anonymous.

The machine suddenly rose vertically, leaving behind a shower of sparks, and "disappeared."

They quote as sources the catalogue by Jacques Vallée, the newspapers "Le Dauphiné Libéré", "Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace" and "L'Aurore" of 30 September 1954, and "Le Parisien Libéré" of September 29, 1954.

According to the March 1970 issue of Lumières Dans La Nuit, and their correspondent, Madame Lefebvre, the same witness was a spectator two years later, 600 meters away, of the landing of an object with presence of occupants. We leave to some the responsibility of the theory of recurring sites and privileged witnesses! For our part we prefer to initiate a search to find Roland M... that is to say, to conduct an investigation on the case and not naïvely report a story often distorted by fanatical intermediaries.
Roland M ... never saw anything, neither in 1954 nor in 1956. He attributes these two stories to tall-tales of journalists. Judge for yourself. Figuring with details in a specialized journal, reported by a buff, we should have been able to consider this case as a reliable fact: it is not so. Hoaxes and mystifications of all kinds have always been numerous, but in UFO matters, they are more common than we think. The reports of occupant observations, on which we conducted an investigation (more than 100 cases that had never been or very badly investigated), do not, in our view, have any character of credibility.

*Sep. 15, 1954 - A white light suddenly swept the road in front of Roland M., age 19, who was driving in Feyzin, Rhone department, France at 11:30 p.m. He observed that it came from a large, dark object shaped like an ellipse about ten meters above the ground, 50 meters away. It flew away, making a noise like wet fireworks, and throwing magnesium-like sparks. FEYZIN (RHONE : FRANCE)
Roland M (19) was motorcycling between La Begude and Feyzin when 200m from the Fort at Feyzin when his attention was caught by a white light from the sky, which swept across the road in front of him and became motionless. Stopping to observe it more closely, he observed that it was coming from the top of a dark elliptical mass 10m above the ground, 50m from him. After a moment he heard a sound like a sputtering fuse and sparks came from the underside of the object, which rose at tremendous speed.

Other cases that may have partial similarities [with helicopters]
Transmitted by Raoul Robé (CNEGU)
Rereading a classic on the return train from the CNEGU, "En quête des humanoïdes" by Ch. Bowen (J'ai Lu 1974), I noted several cases to be compared to that of Langres for your additional documentation investigation.
Page 36: Case 10
September 15, 1954: Near Feyzin (Isère), a white light suddenly sweeps the road in front of the witness. He observes that it is emitted by a large dark object suspended about 10 meters from the ground. The U.F.O. flies off with the noise of a wet firecracker, throwing off sparks similar to those of magnesium.
There is hardly any alternative: either Roland M. saw an extraterrestrial craft, twice, or else he invented the stories.
The report by Garreau and Lavier [gal1] describes a sighting by the same witness in June 1956. As Barthel and Brucker suggest, this makes the 1954 case most dubious; so I think the hoax in both cases is the most likely explanation.
