Zaghetti, Achille, sighting

Alitalia pilot Achille Zaghetti reported a cigar-shaped UFO flying past his plane at high speed during his descent to Heathrow Airport on a flight from Milan to London on April 4, 1991. Immediately following the near-miss, Zaghetti contacted the area control center radar operator who said an unidentified target was observed 10 nautical miles behind the plane. British defence officials ruled out a missile, but offered no explanation for the sighting.

Zanesville

In Zanesville, Michigan, USA, on November 13, 1966, local barber and amateur astronomer Ralph Ditter hoaxed two UFO photos to please his daughter, but the neighborhood saw them and it made a big roar. Some ufologists doubted the photos and asked Rand Corporation to study them, they were found to be hoaxed but most of the media did not care to tell the public, and these pictures are still sometimes referred to as authentic UFO pictures.

Zamora, Lonnie

Lonnie Zamora worked as a sergeant at the Socorro Police Department. Friday 24 April 1964 he witnessed the Socorro landing in New Mexico. The investigation of the Socorro case was lead by Dr J. Allen Hynek with the FBI. The report on the case by the ultra skeptical Major Quintanilla ended up in the Project Blue Book saying: "There is no doubt that Lonnie Zamora saw an object, which left quite an impression on him. There is also no question about Zamora's reliability. He is a serious officer, a pillar of his church, and a man well versed in recognizing airborne vehicles in his area. He is puzzled by what he saw, and frankly, so are we. This is the best documented case on record."

Zammit, Mrs.

After Edward Walters started to take pictures of flying saucers in Gulf Breeze on November 11, 1987, there were some corroboration of his sightings from other people such as Charles I. Somerby and his wife and also a corroboration from a Mrs. Zammit who apparently saw the blue beam that attacked Walters and reported it to the Sentinel local newspaper nine days later, as she felt compelled to do because of the publicity and controversy surrounding the Gulfe Breeze pictures. Investigators on the Gulf Breeze Ed Walters photographs, among them Gary A. Watson, have thus interviewed Mrs Zammit and have said that in their opinions her report is corroborative and truthful. Mrs Zammit later asked that she does not get further publicity or attention.

Zechel, Todd

Todd Zechel is a Wisconsin-based UFO investigator with Ground Saucer Watch. He is dedicated to obtaining UFO-related documents by using the Freedom of Information Act. He founded Citizens Against UFO Secrecy (CAUS) in 1978.

Zeidman, Jennie

Jennie Zeidman was a senior at Ohio State University where she earned a BA degree in English and attended courses there by astronomer and ufology pioneer J. Allen Hynek in 1953, and so she became interested in the UFO problem. She became Hynek's secretary and research assistant in the early days of Project Blue Book when he was their astronomy consultant, and continued to work with him more than 30 years until he died in 1986. While she was at the start convinced that all UFO report can find a commonplace explanation if they are thoroughly investigated, she gradually discovered that this is not the case when she investigated sighting after sighting. Convinced that the matter is worthy of serious research, she stated that the extraterrestrial explanation cannot be ruled out for a number of UFO sighting reports. She is particularly known for her investigation of the helicopter crew close encounter with an unusual craft in Mansfield, Ohio, in 1973, and for her testimony on French TV of a discrete confession made only to her by J. Allen Hynek who told her that US Air Force admitted to him that there was an extraterrestrial spacecraft and occupant recovery operation in Holloman in 1962.

Jennie Zeidman

Zerr, Brian

Brian Zerr is an American ufologist and self-defined UFO hunter who is developing different UFO detection and tracking techniques.

Zeta Reticuli

A binary star system that is roughly 37 light years away from Earth. The aliens that abducted Betty and Barney Hill were supposed to come from a planet in this system, and Bob Lazar claimed that the nine UFOs he saw in S-4 came from one of the planets in the Zeta Reticuli star system.

Ziegel, Felix

Felix Ziegel was a Doctor of Science and Assistant Professor of Cosmology at the Moscow Aviation Institute, former head of Cosmonaut Training, who came to the attention of western ufologists when published an article in the Russian magazine Smena (Change) in 1967, stating that UFOs were worthy of serious scientific attention. This was an extremely unusual and courageous in the Soviet Union, where official statements regarding UFOs had been uniformly dismissive. Ziegel stated that numerous Soviet scientists had witnessed UFOs, and that the government was deeply concerned about the phenomenon. According to author Tim Goode, Ziegel said: "We have seen these UFOs over the USSR; craft of every possible shapes: small, big, flattened, spherical. They are able to remain stationary in the atmosphere or to shoot along at 100,000 kilometers per hour. They move without producing the slightest sound, by creating around themselves a pneumatic vacuum that protects them from the hazard of burning up in our stratosphere. Their craft also have the mysterious capacities to vanish and reappear at will. They are also able to affect our power resources, halting our electricity-generating plants: our radio stations, and our engines, without however leaving any permanent damage. So refined a technology can only be the fruit of an intelligence that is indeed far superior to man." Ziegel collected more than 50,000 UFO reports, which he stored in a computer at the Moscow Aviation Institute. He only published one book based on his own researches, although he stated that he had material for seven more. Ziegel was reluctant to publish any more because he feared the shocking information would create mass unrest in the Soviet Union.

Z machine

The Z machine is the largest X-ray generator in the world and is designed to test materials in conditions of extreme temperature and pressure. In 2004, it was capable of delivering 290 terawatts for very short amount of times, enough to study nuclear fusion. It is operated by Sandia National Laboratories to gather data mainly to aid in computer modeling of nuclear weapons. The Z machine is located at Sandia's main site in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.

Zohn, C.J. Dr.

On June 29, 1947, a few days after Kenneth Arnold's sighting which put the flying saucers reports in the US national Press, Dr. C. J. Zohn, a rocket expert stationed at White Sands Proving Grounds in New Mexico, reported that he had seen a huge, silver, circular disc at a height of 10,000 feet above the installation, flying at more than the speed of sound without any noise. This was also witnessed by another rocket expert, Curtiss Rockwood, and two other people.

Zomdic

Zomdic is the name of a planet that British contactee James Cooke claimed to have visited aboard a flying saucer in September 1957. Cooke claimed that he was invited by a voice into a 12 feet flying saucer that took him in a larger hangar where he was met by beautiful hermaphrodite extraterrestrials who let him visit planet Zomdic. On this planet, he said, the ground transportation system is operated by "manipulation of musical vibration", and no money is used as the resident of Zomdic "have long ago discovered how to transform energy to matter." He met the master of planet Zomdic who told him "the inhabitant of your planet will upset the balance if they persist in using force instead of harmony. Warn them of the danger." Cook replied "they won't listen to me" and the master replied "or anybody else either". After a later contact on Frodsham Hill, and more science-fiction inspired galore, James Cook started a UFO cult, the Church of Aquarius. It became so popular that a second "church" was opened. Here, James Cooke "channeled" information from "the elders of Zomdic". The church ran for 10 years before James disappeared from public view in 1969.

Zone of terror

Anomalist and reporter John Keel claims in in book "The Mothman and other Prophecies" that while driving back from the location of strange encounters he discovered what he called a "zone of fear", an ordinary area where he said he experienced a feeling of fear. He first thought that he "had probably been crossing a field of ultrasounds and there was no reason to be so frightened." Except for the fear, he reports nothing unusual in the zone. Ni UFO, no alien, no mothman (explained as sandhill crane at the time), nothing. He then says he went back to the zone of fear on the next day and the zone of fear had disappeared. He started to look for power lines, phone masts emitting microwaves, everything that could have "radiated energy around this zone. There was nothing."

Zoppi, Francesco

In October 1977, Major Francesco Zoppi of the Italian Air Corps and his co-pilot were on a training flight in their helicopter when they encountered a bright orange circle ahead of them, moving at a speed matching their own. There were other helicopters in the squadron who corroborated the sighting. The object vanished at "a speed impossible for any aircraft of this world to match." It was not detected on radar.

Zuccala, Mario

On April 10, 1962 at about 09:30 p.m., Italian tailor Mario Zuccala, aged 26, was walking from a bus stop to his home in San Casciano, Val di Pesa, near Florence, Italy, when he felt a wind blow. He turned back and saw a disc shaped object of about 25 feet in diameter hovering nearby. A cylinder descended from the underside of this and then withdrew, revealing a second cylinder inside it, which contained a doorway from which a bright light shone. Two humanoid occupants of about four feet tall and dressed in what looked like suits of shining metal came out of the craft and approached Zuccala. They grabbed him and gently took him into the craft, which was filled with a bright light with no obvious source. Zuccala asked the beings where the light came from, but did not receive a reply. At that point, he heard a voice that said in Italian: "At the fourth moon we shall come at one o'clock in the morning to bring you a message for humanity. We shall give notice of this to another person in order to confirm that that which you have seen is true!" The next thing Zuccala knew is that he was standing outside his home and that it was 09:45 p.m. He told his wife about what had happened, she was alarmed at his obvious state of confusion and distress. The next morning, one of Zuccala's colleagues at work, to whom he had told his story, told about it to a journalist and the encounter was subsequently widely reported in the newspapers. Although no physical evidence could be found at the landing site, all those who knew Zuccala testified to his honesty and trustworthiness. He was interviewed by investigator Ceccarelli Silvano and provided sketches of the craft and beings. Zuccala later said he was contacted again and been given half a message, which he kept in a locked case, the other half being given to someone in another European country.

Drawing.

Skeptics have commented that the saucer he describes comes straight out from the famous movie "Earth versus the flying saucers" and generally consider the story as an invention.

Zuiderzee (foo fighter)

Second Lieutenant Roman Sobinski reported the sighting of a round disk on March 25, 1942 or June 1942, which followed his bomber on the return flight of a bomb attack on Essen, above the Zuidersee in Holland. They first saw phenomenon as it approached the airplane, and Sobinski gave the order to fire at will. The disk showed no effect. It was of a orange glowing, was at an altitude of approximately 4500 meters and was between 100 to 200 meters away from the airplane. Its speed was estimated as approximately 300 km/h. It flew away suddenly at a speed estimated as of 1600 km/h.

Zundel, Ernst

Ernst Zundel is a Canadian neo-nazi who claims that just before the end of the war, Hitler and his elite fled to the poles into secret bases, and that flying saucers are built and flown by these nazi hidden air forces. There is a small fraction of the lunatic fringe in ufology that generally does not realize that it is neo-nazi propaganda, and claims that this is plausible or even true.
