Army Air Forces To Investigate 'Flying Discs'

BOISE, Ida., July 3 (U.P.) -- Lt. Gen. Nathan Twining, commanding officer ow Wright Field, Dayton, O., informed the Idaho Statesman today the army air forces is investigating the identity of the semi-circular disc-like objects seen in flight over the Pacific coast in the last 10 days.

Twining's command includes top secret research and he told Statesman Aviation Editor Dave Johnson by telephone, "The air forces have nothing that would compare to descriptions of the objects."

He said also that a "reputable scientist" has seen such objects in flight and that his information was being studied.

But Kenneth Arnold, Boise businessman-pilot, the first person to report sighting of the "flying saucers," said he had not been contacted either by military officials or the FBI. Arnold sighted the discs at about 10,000 feet near Mount Rainier while he was flying in southern Washington June 24.

Johnson said Twining told him that all persons seeing the strange objects in flight should send word to the commanding general at Wright Field.

Twining said he doubted if the discs were guided or pilotless missiles. He said radio energy to control guided missiles is not effective over great distances.
