An observation in Saint-Hilaire-en-Morvan, Nièvre department, was apparently reported in the regional newspaper Le Journal du Centre for August 23, 1954.
As it was the subject of a press release from the Reuters news agency, it appeared from August 26, 1954, on, in the press in the United States and Canada, in the form:
"CHATEAU-CHINON, France, Aug. 25 (Reuters) -- Farmer Jules Doussot, of St. Hilaire en Morvan, near here, claims he saw what may have been a flying saucer traveling towards Chateau-Chinon."
"It was 'a sort of incandescent globe' with 20 or 30 propulsion tubes, he said. It was reddish-brown and preceded by a blinding light."
Then, an article of the United Press appeared in the press, attributing the observation to the consumption of wine:
"Police in Chateau-Chinon questioned a farmer, Jules Doussot, who reported seeing a flying saucer over this region."
"They went away a bit skeptical. Chateau-Chinon is one of the most productive of French wine areas."
The regional newspaper Le Provençal for August 27, 1954, gives some other details. It was while getting out of his house that Julien Doussot ("Roussot" in other newspapers) saw in the sky a kind of incandescent flame, which spread a very white and glittering glow. The thing was heading without any noise towards Châtel-Guyon and was lost from his sight of between two mountains.
Mr. Doussot claimed to have had plenty of time to observe the "machine", which was preceded and not followed by a blinding glow. It was a kind of reddish-brown rectangle, with an aileron on each side. At the back of the rectangle, he clearly distinguished between 20 and 30 tubes terminated by globes or lamps that lit alternately.

The author indicates that in Saint-Hilaire-en-Morvan, on August 26, 1954, a witness saw in the sky a sort of incandescent globe moving silently in the direction of Château-Chinon.
The witness said it was preceded by a blinding reddish-brown glow and appeared to have two fins with 20 or 30 tubes.
The author notes that the description is astonishing and that no official investigation has been carried out.
He indicates that the source is Var Matin.
The report published in the press is obviously too poor in information to find some sure cause for this observation. But it is certainly neither caused by the fact that the region produces wine, nor an observation of a "planet".
It might have been that of a meteor, but the description does not seem to me to correspond much to a meteor.
