In 1979, ufologists Gerard Barthel and Jacques Brucker published their book "La Grande Peur Martienne" in which they intended to show that nothing had occurred during the French saucer flap of 1954 but mistakes and hoaxes.
They indicated that the newspaper La Nouvelle République for October 12, 1954, described an observation in Anglade in the Gironde of October 7, 1954:
Mr. Roger Bellet had also seen a luminous machine, this time of the form of a douelle of barrel, moving towards the west while leaving a colored trail.
Barthel and Brucker further comment than they investigated - but they told nothing about this investigation - and that it had occurred at 06:10 p.m., and was a "luminous phenomenon of low importance."
[Ref. bbr1:] GERARD BARTHEL AND JACQUES BRUCKER:
The two authors provide the article of the newspaper "La Nouvelle République" for October 12, 1954 which describes as follows the observation of October 7, 1954, in Anglade in the department of Gironde:
"Mr Roger Bellet also saw a luminous machine which had this time the shape of a douelle of barrel and which moved towards the west. It left behind itself a colored trail."
Further in their book, they list the case as follows:
"Anglade - 33 - 06:30 p.m. Luminous phenomenon of little importance."
Totally insufficient data. However, this looks like an obvious description of a meteor, hence, this was probably a meteor, or maybe just a shooting star.
Since December 2005, I found no other source than [bbr1] for this case.
A "douelle" is the elementary piece of wood which one assembles to make the sides of the barrel. Is is long, slightly curved.
