The French ufologist René Malvillan noted that Mr. André Mela, of Brignoles in the Var, a milkman by profession, was in his garden at the old Chemin de la Celle when his attention was drawn to the sky.
He saw a big luminous ball coming from the north-east direction, spinning in the sky "at a vertiginous speed."
The "big fireball" left behind a wide yellow trail. There was no sound. It disappeared or was lost from sight still to the northeast.
In 1979, ufologists Michel Figuet and Jean-Louis Ruchon published the case in summary, stating that it was on October 5, 1954, at 09:00 p.m., and that the case had been reported in the magazine Lumières Dans La Nuit #100 bis of July 1969.

83 VAR BRIGNOLES
End September 1954 - 9 p.m. F, oui
A merchant from Brignoles, Mr. R..., was returning from Toulon by car accompanied by his wife. The latter, in the plain of Néoules in Garréoult (see Contact 99 bis) had her attention drawn by an object of intense luminosity, planted in the ground, having the shape of one of those large cigars which still serve as a sign for tobacconists storefronts.
Frightened, she begged her husband not to stop. The latter continued on his way, but a few hundred meters further he stopped, to find out that the luminous object had disappeared.
(Note that the same places are often cited).
October 5, 1954 - 9 p.m.
Mr. André Mela, dairyman at Brignole, was in his garden, old road to La Celle, when his attention was focused on the sky. He saw a large luminous ball which came from the northeast and flew at a dizzying speed.
The fireball lookedt to him like a tracer bullet, leaving behind a wide yellowish trail and disappeared towards the northeast, without making any sound.
(Communicated by Mr. Malvillan).

The two authors indicate that on October 5, 1954 at 09:00 in Brignoles in the department of the Var, a milkman observed a large luminous ball making him the effect of a "tracing bullet."
[Ref. fru2] MICHEL FIGUET AND JEAN-LOUIS RUCHON:
The authors indicate that at the end of the September 1954, between Gareoult and Néoules, at 9 p.m., a tradesman of Brignolles and his wife observed a luminous object planted in the ground which had the shape of a sign of a tobacconist's shop.
Coming back from Toulouse, Mrs. R... saw this object, was frightened and requested her husband not to stop. He continued his travel, stopped a few hundreds of meters further and noted that the luminous object had disappeared.
The authors indicate that the sources are LDLN N.100 bis on page 15 and Nice-Matin for September 18, 1954.
