In the late 1960s, ufologist René Malvillan noted that in the Var department, in Brignoles, at the end of September 1954 at 9 p.m., a merchant of this city, Mr. R ..., returned from Toulon by car accompanied of his wife.
The latter, in the plain from Néoules to Garréoult, had her attention attracted by an object of an intense luminosity, planted in ground, having the shape of one of those big cigars which still serve as sign to the frontages of bar tobacco.
Frightened, she urged her husband not to stop. The latter continued on his way, but a few hundred meters away, he stopped and saw the luminous object had disappeared.
Ufologists Michel Figuet and Jean-Louis Ruchon gave the same story in their 1979 book, indicating as sources the ufology magazine Lumières Dans La Nuit #100 bis of 1969 and the newspaper Nice-Matin for August 18, 1977. Michel Figuet estimated in his 1985 catalog this case is unidentified but dubious.

VAR 83 - Brignoles - End of September 1954 - 9 P.M.
A tradesman of Brignoles, Mr. R...., returned from Toulon by car accompanied by his wife. The latter, in the plain from Néoules to Garréoult, had her attention drawn by an object of an intense luminosity, planted in the ground, having the form of one of these large cigars which are still used as sign at the fronts of tobaccos/bars.
Seized by fear, she begged her husband not to stop. He continued to drive, but a few hundred meters further, he stopped, and noted that the luminous object had disappeared.

Frightened, she begged her husband not to stop. The latter continued on his way, but a few hundred meters further he stopped, to find out that the luminous object had disappeared.
(Note that the same places are often cited).
October 5, 1954 - 9 p.m.
Mr. André Mela, dairyman at Brignole, was in his garden, old road to La Celle, when his attention was focused on the sky. He saw a large luminous ball which came from the northeast and flew at a dizzying speed.
The fireball lookedt to him like a tracer bullet, leaving behind a wide yellowish trail and disappeared towards the northeast, without making any sound.
(Communicated by Mr. Malvillan).

And: "An object was sighted that had an appearance and performance beyond the capability of known earthly aircraft. One luminous cigar-shaped object was observed by two witnesses in a pasture for two minutes."

Unidentified, unknown credibility.
At this time in France, almost all "bar-tabacs", that is to say a shop where you went to buy cigarettes and a newspaper which often was also a bar where to drink a coffee or a beer or a glass of wine, had this signpost nicknamed "a carrot" at their front:
