Reference for this case: 18-oct-54-Cisternes-la-Forêt.
Please cite this reference in any correspondence with me regarding this case.
The case was first reported by the regional newspaper La Liberté for October 19, 1954; which indicated from Cisternes-la-Forêt in the Puy-de-Dôme department, that "Sunday evening", at nightfall, a farmer, Mr. Jean Augard, and a former miner, Mr. Jean Chazotte, had seen in a field at the edge of the road a saucer-shaped craft surmounted by a dome, of a very bright white color.
When they had seen it, the two men had wanted to approach it, but they had scarcely penetrated into the field, that the craft rose noiselessly and disappeared, at a brisk pace, towards the northeast, leaving behind a slightly reddish trail.
The next day, the same newspaper rectified the date: "Information taken, we want to clarify that the craft was not seen Sunday night, but Saturday night" thus on October 16, 1954 "around 9:30 p.m., by one of the two witnesses we quoted yesterday, and this craft was flying along an east-west course approximately."
The newspaper recalled that the same Saturday around that hour, people from Saint-Georges-de-Mons, Les Ancizes, Montlucon and Vichy had observed the same phenomenon.
As for the witness Mr. Chazotte, a retired miner in Cisternes-la-Forêt, he asked the newspaper to insert his following letter:
"Following the article in your journal, which I am an avid reader, I want to re-establish the facts."
"Saturday evening, October 16, having left home at 9:30 p.m., I saw a luminous roundness of the size of a plate, leaving a reddish trail of about three meters, ending in a cone. This glow passed through the village of Cisternes, from east to west, and it was moving at high speed, gaining height, and I never saw a craft on the ground."
At this point, it it quite obvious that it was the famous meteor of that day at that hour reported over a large part of France, as noted by ufologist Aimé Michel in his 1958 book.
Unfortunately, ufologist Jacques Vallée would note the observation as if it were unexplained in his 1966 listing, with only the name "Cisternes-la-Forêt" and a new wrong date, that of October 18, 1954.
Then, in 1969, the same Jacques Vallée noted the case in his catalog as being a "UFO landing" of October 18, 1954, in Cisternes-la-Forêt: "J. Augard and J. Chanzotte", he wrote, had seen an oval object, surmounted by a dome, and emitting a brilliant white light, posed in a field. When they approached it, it rose vertically leaving a reddish trail and disappeared towards the northeast. Vallée would indicate sources only in the 1974 version of his landings catalog, ie "Combat, La Croix, Oct. 20, 1954".
This will be copied as is by the British ufologist Peter Rogerson - future "skeptic" - in his catalog.
In the 1970s, ufologist Jean Giraud used the Vallée version, giving as sources "the regional press", and noting that there was no investigation but that the case had been reported to the gendarmerie.
In 1979, the "skeptical" ufologists Gérard Barthel and Jacques Brucker believed they were rectifying things. They noted that the name "Chanzotte" given by Vallée was actually "Chauzotte", and that it was changed to "Chauzotte" because of an error of Mrs. Gueudelot, LDLN ugology group archivist - which makes Barthel and Brucker contradict themselves. They indicated that Mrs. Guedeulot had written "Augord" instead of "Augard", which is possible but not verified since the "LDLN archive" are not published anywhere.
Then, they claim to have "conducted an investigation" on this case and "found, after many difficulties", a witness, Mr. Aucheard, who would have explained to them that in the company of Mr. Chazotte, they had been "victims of a hoax perpertated by locals", and that according to the newspaper La Dépêche du Midi the case dates from October 8 and not October 18.
Everything happens as if Barthel and Brucker, wanting to denounce the mistakes of the others, were also embarked on wrong dates, the 8th or the 18th, thus missing the obvious explanation of the meteor of the 16th, inventing an explanation of their own and adding again a new incorrect date. I suspect that the Mr. "Aucheard" they may have found had nothing to do with Mr. Chazotte's sighting.
All this will not prevent this October 16th meteor case from continuing to appear as a bona fide UFO landing of October 18, 1954, despite the rectification of date and nature of the case by Michel Figuet in 1985. Larry Hatch, Godelieve van Overmeire, Jerome Beau, Luc Chastanand others continued to republich the Vallée version of an October 18, 1954, UFO landing.
Finally around 2016, Peter Rogerson, ufologist who had become "skeptical", pretended not to have read my file; which he does not credit, while using it, adding an error of clumsy formulation resulting in the impression that it was Mr. Chazotte in his letter in La Liberté of October 20, 1954, who suggested that it was a meteor.

Saucer, cigars, mysterious cylinders, crescent or balls, passionate the public opinion and theres is no day that passes without one collects testimonies often contradictory as of the forms, the dimensions or the speeds of the observed machines but indisputable as to the existence of mysterious craft.
Over the weekend and yesterday many people have seen some intriguing devices.
IN CISTERNES-LA-FORET IN THE PUY-DE-DOME
On Sunday evening, at nightfall, a farmer, Mr. Jean Augard, and a former miner, Mr. Jean Chazotte, saw in a field along the road a saucer-shaped machine surmounted by a dome, of a very bright white.
Seeing this "saucer", the two men wanted to approach it, but hardly had they penetrated in the field that the craft rose without noise and disappeared, at a fast pace, in the direction of the northeast, leaving behind a slight reddish trail.
Recall that some time ago a "saucer" had been sighted in Gelles, near Cisternes-la-Forêt.
[Ref. lle2:] NEWSPAPER "LA LIBERTE":
In our issue yesterday, we announced that two residents of Cisternes-la-Forêt (Puy-de-Dome) had sighted a mysterious machine that had landed in a field.
Information obtained, we would like to point out that the craft was not seen Sunday night, but Saturday night around 9:30 p.m., by one of the two witnesses we quoted yesterday; and this craft was flying along an east-west trajectory approximately.
We recall that Saturday around this time, people from Saint-Georges-de-Mons, Les Ancizes, Montlucon and Vichy observed the same phenomenon.
Mr. Chazotte, a retired mine worker from Cisternes-la-Foret, put in place by our article yesterday, asks us to insert the following letter:
"Following the article in your journal, which I am an avid reader, I want to re-establish the facts.
"Saturday evening, October 16th, goint out of my home at 9:30 p.m., I saw a luminous roundness of the size of a plate, leaving a reddish trail of about three meters, ending in a cone. This gleam crossed the town of Cisternes, from east to west, and it was moving at great speed, and I never saw a craft posed on the ground."
One less saucer...!
[Ref. lcx1:] NEWSPAPER "LA CROIX":
MM. Jean Augard, farmer in Sisternes-la-Forêt [sic] (Puy-de-Dôme), and Jean Chanzotte, former miner, declared to have seen, in a field by the roadside, a craft of ovoid shape surmounted by a dome of a brilliant white color. As the two men approached the "saucer", it rose vertically and disappeared in a northeast direction, leaving behind a reddish trail.
In Gelles, a neighboring town, several people had seen a similar craft, also posed in a field.
In the Vendée, [Error: in Charente-Maritime] in Pont-l'Abbé-d'Arnoult, a mysterious craft that was rising vertically behind a hedge, was seen by Mr. Meunier, foreman in a masonry company.
Several people were running through fields in Moyaux (Calvados), in the direction of a flying saucer which had been pointed out to them by a child.
One of them, a farmer, Mr. Filate, who never took his eyes off the sky, fell into a deep pond where he almost drowned. Fortunately, his companions managed to save him.
A "melon" made its appearance this time in the skies of Alsace. Indeed, several people, including a few pilots from the Strasbourg Aero-Club, claim to have seen on Saturday evening a shiny craft, having the shape of a melon, and leaving a trace of two meters of white-orange color, fly over the region of the Bas-Rhin.
Two residents of St-Cirgues (Haute-Loire), saw in the sky, at very high altitude, two luminous balls which seemed interconnected by a rod. The craft remained motionless for a quarter of an hour then disappeared at very high speed.
Monday evening, around 9:25 p.m., in Pommier (Pas-de-Calais), the brigadier head of the gendarmerie and a gendarme saw an orange luminous craft moving at a very high speed from East to West at about 500 meters of altitude.
One also reports the passage of saucers in the Italian sky, above Milan, Trento, Genoa and the Po delta.
One of these craft reportedly even have landed in Capri at night, of course. It is a painter, Mr. Raffaële Castello, who allgedly saw the saucer land on the terrace of the villa of Malaporte [sic, Malaparte]. The painter, who had thought it was a helicopter, approached and was surprised to see four men, small in size, descend from the disc. The passengers of the craft, who were dressed in an outfit, remained around the disc for about half an hour. Bluish gleams escaped the disc incessantly, pin-like and lightning-fast, they went off in all directions.
After some time, about half an hour, the four men re-entered the disc which, with a slight hum, rose slowly, perpendicularly, and then quickly gained altitude.
Mr. Holaubek, Vienna's Prefect of Police, ordered officers under his command to report all the flying saucer stories and all the statements by people claiming to have seen "visitors from another world."
[Ref. lml1:] NEWSPAPER "LE MERIDIONAL":
CLERMONT-FERRAND. -- MISTERS Jean Augard, farmer in Sisternes-la-Forêt (the Puy-de-Dôme) and Jean Chanzotte, former mine worker, stated to have seen, in a field at the edge of the road, an ovoid-shaped craft surmounted of a cupola of a brilliant white. As the two men approached the "saucer", it rose vertically and disappeared in direction of the North-East, leaving behind it a reddish trail.
A few days ago, in Gelles, a nearby village, several people had seen a similar craft, also posed in a field.
[Ref. ppe1:] NEWSPAPER "PARIS-PRESSE":
CURZIO MALAPARTE missed the book of his life.
A flying saucer stuffed with "Martians" like a subway train at six in the evening landed on the terrace of his summer villa in Capri. And Malaparte was not there! Disappointed, the Martians who probably wanted to have "The Skin" signed off, left.
It was a painter, Raffaele Castello, who saw them. He was walking at night at Cape Maroulo when he saw a huge disc five meters in diameter delicately landing on the Malapartean villa. Four of the Martians - they were short, dressed in overalls and speaking in low voices - entered the writer's house. Half an hour later, they left without having even taken a book. They climbed back into the craft which, casting classic bluish gleams, rose as perpendicular as it was silent and disappeared towards Sicily. Farewell Martians!
Various saucers and cigars have flown all over Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Spain (these are the first, the Franco regime seemed to intimidate the Martians so far) and naturally in France. Our happy compatriots who were favored with their vision are Pierre Pouquet in Saint-Germain-les-Belles (Haute-Vienne), Perrichou and Mrs., in Uzel (Côtes-du-Nord), Meunier in Pont-l'Abbé-d'Arnoult (Vendée) [Charente-Maritime], Boulineau in Luçon, Jean Aufard in Sisternes-la-Forêt (Pas-de-Calais), Perrault and Villerot in Brain, near Decize, Decréquy, marshall of the gendarmerie in Pommier (Pas-de-Calais), Filatte, farmer in Noyeux (Eure).
This Mr. Filatte, running across the fields to observe the saucer, fell into a pond and almost drowned.
LIVORNO. October 19. (AFP.) - "They are persecuting me... They are coming to get me... I saw them land in a field... Saucers, large and small... Lights and smoke... The Martians... The Martians...", it is by shouting these pieces of sentences expressing his deep agitation that Mr. Bruno Senesi, 34, came to the hospital in Livorno, asking to be helped. But when the nurse returned with the doctor on duty, Senesi was gone. He was found hidden under a bed, shaken by violent shivers.
At the asylum, his condition causes concern.

Aimé Michel reports in his book that on October 18, 1954, in Cisterne-la-Forêt, a few kilometers from Gelles and from Coheix, two people had seen an object on the ground which had the same shape as the one seen in Gelles this day, thus of ovoid shape. When the witnesses approached, it flew away quickly towards the North-East.

[Ref. bbr3:] GERARD BARTHEL AND JACQUES BRUCKER:
Before concluding our intervention in the pages of this magazine, we would like to add some clarifications that have appeared to us during our investigations. "A classic".
Cisternes la Forêt, cited by Jacques Vallée on October 18, 1954: "J. Augard and J. Chanzotte saw an oval object, surmounted by a dome, and emitting a brilliant white light, posed in a field. When they approached it, it rose vertically leaving a reddish trail and disappeared towards the northeast."
For desirable cohesion, in a scientific spirit, it is obviously essential that the rigor be everywhere present in the contributions and files. The text of Mr. Vallée contains at least an error in the name of one of the witnesses, it is not a Mr. Chanzotte but a Mr. Chazotte this perhaps is due to a misprint in the newspapers which he used as reference. Mrs. Gueudelot, archivist of LDLN, entered this case in her file but in doing so, she introduced two errors in relation to Jacques Vallée: it is no longer a question of Mr. Chanzotte, but of Mr. Chauzotte, it is no longer about Mr. Augard, but about Mr. Augord. That such inadequacies and gross errors in the data are a profound hindrance to the results of the studies on which they are based, Ufologists with careless minds should refrain from preaching rigor! We made an investigation into this case and found, after many difficulties, a witness, Mr. Aucheard who explained that in the company of Mr. Chazotte they had been the victim of a hoax perpetrated by locals. Last point of detail, the newspaper "La Dépêche du Midi" date this case of October 8, not 18!
[Ref. fru1] MICHEL FIGUET AND JEAN-LOUIS RUCHON:
The two authors indicate that in Cisternes La Fôret in the department of Puy de Dôme on October 18, 1954, at some unknown time, Mssrs. Augard et Chanzotte approached an oval object, topped by a dome, which emitted a brilliant yellow light, and was posed in a field.
The machine rose vertically leaving a reddish trail and disappeared.
The authors indicate that the sources are case 282 of the Vallée catalogue; Aimé Michel in "A Propos des S.V." page 241; L.D.L.N. #69; Combat and La Croix for October 20, 1954.

In an extract of his Francat catalogue, Michel Figuet recorded that the case occurred on October 16, 1954 and not on October 18, 1954 and that it was a fireball going from East to West according to a letter by Mr. Chanzotte to the newspaper "La Liberté" for October 20, 1954, the source being an article headlined "Heureux ceux qui croient sans savoir" ("Happy those who believe without knowing") in LDLN 240-250 [ sic ] page 21.
[Ref. mft2:] MICHEL FIGUET:
The witnesses of CISTERNES were really MISTERS AUCHEARD and CHAZOTTE and not MISTERS AUGARD and CHANZOTTE but what wouldthis have changed if the phenomenon observed had been authentic.
The authors quote: moreover, and it is written black on white in "France-Soir" for 10/1/1954, this incident is due to a confusion.
Hold on! One refers in an article of press this time and surprize: it is of a confusion and not a prank.
Note: Figuet answers a criticism by Gerard Barthel and Jacques Brucker. The latter would have said that Figuet believe the Press, this is why Figuet replies that it is Barthel and Brucker who believe the press, when the Press gives an ordinary explanation to a sighting.
Figuet seems to think that Barthel and Brucker changed opinion on the explanation: hoax, then confusion; this seems not to be true if one refers to [bbr2] below.
[Ref. bbr2:] GERARD BARTHEL AND JACQUES BRUCKER:
If we criticize Mrs Gueudelot, it is not only for the case of Cisternes la Forêt, but for all of her "work".
Her records are only errors. A minimum of severity is required. May she take as an example the work of Mr. Jeantheau, remarkable in order, rigor and precision.
If Mr. Figuet wants to reread our article "Le ressac d'une vague" (9), he will see that for the case of Cisternes, we do not quote "France-Soir", but only J. Vallée; we could add "Combat" and "La Croix" for 10-20-54 and the G. Quincy catalog.
