In the national newspaper France Soir for October 14, 1954, it was reported that a car had been "stopped by the passage of a reddish ball":
"SAINT-ETIENNE, October 12 (Dep. "France-Soir") - Two residents of Geugnon, Messrs. Jeannot and Garnier, who were returning to their homes by car, were, on Sunday evening, the witnesses of an inexplicable phenomenon."
"Suddenly their vehicle was overflown by a kind of reddish ball that flashed past. The car's engine stopped and they had no lights anymore. Moments later, as the luminous apparition faded away, dimming on the horizon, the car's headlights came on again and the engine roared again."
In 1958, in his book "Mystérieux Objets Célestes", the pioneer of French ufology evoked the case by clearly mistaking the date, giving October 14, 1954. He said that two inhabitants of the rue Jean-Jaurès in Geugnon, Messrs Jeannet and Garnier, reported:
"We were returning from Clessy to Gueugnon by the departmental road 25. It was a little after 7:30 p.m. and we arrived at the last farmhouse on the right of the road, all headlights on, before the last descent to the national road 494, when suddenly our vehicle was overflown at low altitude by a sort of reddish bolide which passed like a flash."
"Suddenly the engine stalled and we had no lights anymore. After a few seconds, as the glow from the ball had extinguished in the distance to our left, the headlights came back on. I operated the starter, and the engine roared again."
Michel noted that the place indicated by the witnesses is located on the western edge of the Wood of Chazey.
Michel thought he discovered that this case and five other cases of October 14, 1954, were "aligned", on a straight line. He would repeat this statement many times over the years in his articles on what he called "orthotheny", his observation of these alignments during the 1954 wave. It will be taken up by many others, no one checking the case, no one realizing the error on the date of this case, among other errors in the straight line theory.
"Debunkers" Barthel and Brucker, in their 1979 book, are equally mistaken about the date, while claiming that the case would be a "hoax after investigation" - an investigation they said nothing about, which must not have been very thorough since they did not realize the date error, and an obviously false explanation, an invention on their part, as we will see.
There were few exceptions to the date error; but it should be noted that in the ufology magazine Lumières Dans La Nuit in 1989, it was already said that the case must have occurred "before 10/12", saying this is based on the regional newspaper Le Petit Maconnais for October 12, 1954.
Michel Figuet, in his 1979 book, took up the story by Aimé Michel with the false date; in his FRANCAT catalog published in Lumières Dans La Nuit in November 1985, the date is still wrong but he indicates that the case is explained as a misinterpretation caused by a meteor.
In the 2000s, the US ufologist Larry Hatch cataloged the case twice, once with the correct date, citing Vallée as the source, once with the wrong one.
The date of the sighting really being October 10, 1954, I think that the witnesses saw the 6:15 p.m. meteor of that day.

NEVERS, October 13 ("France-Soir" newsbrief). Two merchants from Clamecy, Mr. Louis Vigneron and Henri Gallois, who were traveling yesterday morning at about six o'clock in their van to the Cordigny fair, saw in a field about fifty yards from the road, a machine of cylindrical shape of a rather large diameter.
At the same moment, the engine of the van stopped and the headlights turned off.
"I was," said Mr. Gallois, "breathless. My body covered with electric shocks. I was able to distinguish very clearly the machine that resembled a saucer.
"I saw, around the machine, three people of small size who seemed to me to be human, and we were immobilized inside the car and unable to move. It was only after the craft had taken off with tremendous speed that we were able to resume our travel."
Mr. Vigneron confirmed the statements of his companion as well as a third witness, Mr. Henri Chameau, cartwright in La Carte, commune of Clamecy.
SAINT-ETIENNE, October 12 ("France-Soir" newsbrief). - Two residents of Geugnon, Mrrs. Jeannot and Garnier, who were returning home by car, were, on Sunday evening, witnesses of an unexplainable phenomenon.
Suddenly, their vehicle was overflown by a kind of reddish ball that passed like a lightning. The engine of the car stopped and they were deprived of light. Moments later, as the light faded on the horizon, the headlights of the car functioned again and the engine began to roar again.
[Ref. aml1:] AIME MICHEL:
Aimé Michel indicates that two residents of Jean-Jaurès street in Geugnon, Messrs. Jeannet and Garnier, reported their observation of October 14:
"We were returning from Clessy to Gueugnon by the secondary road 25. It was a little more than 07:30 P.M., and we arrived all headlights on at the height of the last farm located on the right of the road, before the last descent towards the main road 494, when suddenly our vehicle was flown over at low altitude by a kind of reddish bolide which passed like a flash."
"All of a sudden, the engine stalled and we were deprived of light. After a few seconds, whereas the gleam spread by the ball became extinct far on our left, the headlights re-ignited. I actuated the starter, and the engine started to whirr again."
Michel notes that the place indicated by the witnesses is located on the western edge of the wood of Chazey.
[Ref. aml5:] AIME MICHEL:
And it was then that having arrived in the region comprising Burgundy, Lyonnais and Franche-Comté, I had for the first time the impression of distinguishing something singular, abnormal. From Poligny to a point located a little south of Gueugnon, in Saône-et-Loire, five pins were in a strictly rectilinear arrangement over a distance of 130 kilometers. Along this line were located successively from east to west the observations of Bois de Poligny, Saint-Germain-du-Bois, Saint-Romain-sous-Gourdon, Ciry-le-Noble (Departmental 60), and finally Bois de Chazey (Departmental 25).
Very interested, I searched in my files what these observations corresponded to. First surprise: all were dated the same day, October 14, and were staggered in time between 6.30 p.m.-35 (Poligny) and 7.35 p.m. (Bois de Chazey).
[Ref. aml4:] AIME MICHEL:
Along this line, from East to West, the observations of the Wood of Poligny, Saint-Germain du Bois, Saint-Romain sous Gourdon, the Departmental 60 near Ciry le Noble, and the Departmental 25 near the Wood of Chazey. By checking their date, I first discovered with astonishment that all these cases were from October 14, then that, of the 5 observations, one (Saint-Germain) was a luminous object placed on the ground, the next (Saint-Romain) a motionless luminous object, placed on the ground, blocking an engine and turning off a headlight, the third a luminous object flying over the countryside at tree-level (Departmental 60), the fourth a similar object blocking an engine and turning off headlights. Only the observation of Poligny could be taken for a meteor. All the others exhibited the most incredible characters attributed to the Saucers.
[Ref. aml6:] AIME MICHEL:
I then (after numerous other attempts) undertook to study the disposition of the observations on a map, area by area, when something odd caught my attention on the Center East of France. From the south of Poligny til a spot located near Gueugnon, in the Saône-et-Loire, five observations showed a strictly rectilinear disposition, on a distance of 130 kilometers.
Along this line, from Eat to West, followed the observations of the Wood of Poligny, of Saint-Germain du Bois, of Saint Romain sous Gourdon, of the Départementale 60 near Ciry-le-Noble, and of the Départementale 25 near the Chazey Wood.
Checking their dates, I first discovered with amazement that all these cases were of October 14, then that, on the 5 observations, one (Saint-Germain) was a luminous object posed on the ground, the next (Saint-Romain) a motionless luminous object, posed on the ground, stalling an engine and turning off a headlight, the third a luminous object flying over the country grazing the trees (Départementale 60), the fourth a similar object blocking an engine and turning off headlights. Only the observation of Poligny may be mistaken for a bolide. All the others showed the most incredible characteristic allotted to the Saucers.
[Ref. rvt1:] RAYMOND VEILITH:
Along this line, from East to West, the observations of Bois de Poligny, Saint-Germain du Bois, Saint-Romain sous Gourdon, the Departmental 60 near Ciry-le-Noble followed one another, and of the Departmental 25 near Bois de Chazey.
By checking their date. I discovered with astonishment at first that all these cases were from October 14th, then that, out of the 5 observations, one (Saint-Germain) was a light object posed on the ground, the next (Saint-Romain) a motionless luminous object, placed on the ground, blocking an engine and extinguishing a headlight, the third a luminous object flying over the countryside close to the trees (Departmental 60), the fourth, a similar object blocking an engine and turning off the headlights.

The author indicates that in his second book Aimé Michel reports that on October 14, 1954, at about 7:30 p.m., two inhabitants of Gueugnon, Messrs. Jeannet and Garnier, were driving on road D-25 from Clessy Towards Gueugnon. They were crossing a wooded area called Chazey Wood when a sort of reddish glow flew over their car at high speed, and they told:
"All at once the motor stopped and we had no lights. After a few seconds, when the light shed by the ball had gone out in the distance on our left, the headlights came on. I pushed the starter, and the motor begun to turn over again."

One of the first alignments I discovered is the one that spawns the 14 October observations between Poligny and Chazey Wood. Its rigor, and I would say its beauty are irrefutable.
[Ref. aml3:] AIME MICHEL:
Then, one day, I thought I saw the beginning of light. Studying the cases of October 14 on a map of Burgundy, I was struck by the fact that five of them (Poligny, Saint-Germain-du-Bois, Les Brosses-Tillot, national road 60 and the Chazey Wood) were arranged in a straight line. I then looked for other straight lines, and found many. Many unconvincing, but some that seemed to defy chance.
[Ref. ldl2:] MAGAZINE D'UFOLOGIE "LUMIERES DANS LA NUIT":
One of the first alignments that I discovered is the one that spans the observations of October 14 between Poligny and the Bois de Chazey. Its thoroughness, and I will say its beauty on the menu, is indisputable. Only, of the five observations thus aligned, two were landings, and reported by a single witness; the very type of "bad" observation, the one that we hardly examine, and with a grain of salt! Their arrangement on a very strict line changed all that, from badly attested, these observations became "excellent", supported as they were by all those of the alignment. And suddenly, the details given by the witnesses deserved consideration. They were examined with all the more interest because they were more out of the ordinary. Thus were imposed on us the richest in detail, the most interesting cases of the wave, those which for the first time gave a close-up, almost familiar image of the phenomenon of the century. From this point of view, it suffices to leaf through Flying Sauces and the Straight Line Mystery to grasp what differentiates it from all the previously published books on the same subject: by issuing their credentials to close observations and landings, the alignment made them enter into the field of research. Until then, this type of observation was going to the dustbin.

About the date: Aimé Michel, then others like Barthel and Brucker, do not give the correct for this case. The press of October 12, 1954, said it was "Sunday evening", so the date cannot be October 14, 1954, with the publication on October 12, 1954. The Sunday in question is October 10, 1954.
As of Barthel and Brucker, they have a wrong date and a correct one since they cumulate two observations in one, this one and that of André Cognard which would be indeed dated October 14, 1954.
