ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Ungersheim, on March 3, 2013:

Case number:

ALSACAT-2013-03-03-UNGERSHEIM-1

Summary:

On a ufology web forum, a security guard from the Ecomusée of Alsace, near Ungersheim, Haut-Rhin, reported on March 4, 2014, his observation of March 3, 2013 at this place, of what he thinks was "a craft of large size" - actually two lights. He said that the idea that these two lights were part of a large craft is his personal feeling.

At 11:36 p.m., under a clear, beautiful sky, during his closing round, his gaze was drawn to the sky by two very luminous white lights that followed one another. He found it very strange that when one stopped, the other did the same, and this happened twice.

The movement was slow, no sound, no smell.

At one time, the first light stopped dead and the other passed over it in a circle's arc move, "like a windshield wiper," and both "disappeared" during this movement.

The sighting lasted about two minutes. The lights seemed very high "as if at the altitude of an airliner." The lights were distant from each other such that there could have been at least sic airliners between them.

The witness added a sketch of the observation, with lights above the so-called "St. Louis" house on the Carpenters' square. He did not report to the police or GEIPAN.

Complete observation report:

Good evening,

I'm a security guard at the ecomuseum of Alsace durin my closing round my eyes were drawn to the sky (most splendid that night) to see two lights that followed each other they werre white and very luminous! What was strange was when one was stopped the other was perfectly synchronized automatically (they made two simultaneous stop), it moved slowly and at one time (i'll be doing a sketch later as i'm at work now... ) the first stopped short and the other is passed over an arc of a circle (like a windshield wipe ) and it disappeared in this movement! It lasted about two minutes, it seemed very high i would say it looked like the altitude of an airliner and between the two lights one would have been able to put at least 6 airlines, not jets, I will do my best to sketch that resembles most, just one more thing and that's only my personal feeling I really had the feeling that it was only one object but it is only my opinion.

that's it i just wanted to share this with you.

Discussion:

Map.

In view of the description of simultaneous movements, the description of the "UFO", with the "disappearance", I think this may have been Chinese lanterns.

They obviously follow the wind, and when there is a vortex or changing wind, they may appear to perform the "same maneuvers". Disappearance occurs when they turn off due to the lack of fuel.

Chinese lanterns are certainly more often of an orange color. But manufacturers have been selling for years Chinese lanterns of all colors (See image below, from a well-known reseller's web site), including white ones.

Colored Chinese lanterns.

The first "false UFOs" caused by Chinese lanterns that I identified were in the United States during the airship wave of 1896-1897, it also happened during the 1954 French "saucers" flap, including in Alsace (Example), it happened during the wave of 1973 in the United States (Example), etc. As there are years-long gaps in their use, some ufologists, too many ufologists, and of course the witnesses, forget them as a possible cause for UFO sightings.

In the years 2005 to 2014 (when I write these lines - in Alsace, most so-called "UFO sightings" that were reported were actually caused by Chinese lanterns.

I cannot "prove" this sighting is explained by Chinese lanterns. I only say that it looks like the most obvious explanation.

Evaluation:

Possible Chinese lanterns.
