ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

An unidentified phenomenon last night in the sky of eastern France

Published on 10/22/2012

"It was like an elongated pear ending with a long white yellow filament" a witness describes on the Est Républicain website. Many residents of Lorraine, Franche-Comté and Alsace say they saw, in the night from Sunday to Monday, a strange phenomenon in the sky, "a luminous shape with blue green reflections" passing "very fast."

"I was driving between Strasbourg and Mulhouse on the A35, and I observed this phenomenon between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., thus in Alsace.

This lasted a few seconds ... I did not believe my eyes!" says Thomas R.

"I was followed by friends who saw it too. We thought about fireworks but the sub-horizontal trajectory does not match. We also thought of a shooting star, but it was slower" says another web user.

Shooting star, ufo? "It can be a piece of satellite, which entered the atmosphere," said Marc Kaschinski of the Observatory of the Côte de Meuse, to l'Est Républicain. "It can also be a meteorite that is very fast," he continues.

This is certainly not the first time that unexplained luminous phenomena are observed in the sky. Last August, the inhabitants of the Essonne had seen luminous spheres fly over their garden. Last year, Soyuz debris had turned into Christmas UFOs over much of Europe.

Discussion:

This was a meteor, widely seen and reported, crossing the sky of Eastern France.

The precise time of 07:27 p.m. I indicate comes from other witnesses; this witness is very vague with his "between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m."

Refer for example to http://www.cidehom.com/question.php?_q_id=4453

There were course many observation reports of this event from Alsace; they have no place here because they do not claim it was a "UFO" but a meteor or a "celestial phenomenon".

In this report too, it is actually the newspaper and not the witness who mentioned the possibility of a UFO.

Evaluation:

Meteor.
