ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Rhinau, on August 11, 1977:

Case number:

ALSACAT-1977-08-11-RHINAU-1

Summary:

The regional newspaper Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace for August 13, 1977, had reported that a strange light phenomenon was observed by a couple from Strasbourg driving on EDF the road in the direction Rhinau / Strasbourg, on the night of August 11 to 12, 1977, at 11:45 p.m.

The driver was a man of the Neudorf district of Strasbourg, Mr. Joly, the passengers were his wife, their young son, and the wife's 14-year-old sister.

Still under the influence of emotion, the wife had told the newspaper:

"My husband stopped the car, and then he lowered his window so we were able to observe the phenomenon. The craft was motionless, too; it had two headlights, yellow, directed horizontally relative to itself; from both sides and between the two headlights, we very clearly noted kinds of lights, smaller than the headlights and red."

"That's when the craft started to move on a small distance. I got scared and I said to my husband:... go away, let's go."

"While we started the car again, the craft also moved in the opposite direction to ours. I bent down to watch it go. But then I noticed it made a U-turn, placed itself behind us, seeming to move very quickly now."

"I can not give exact figures, but I felt it was very low, only a few meters from the ground, close to us. The yellow lights came down toward us, while the red lights were rotating like those of the firefighters do."

"I begged my husband to accelerate. We drove as fast as possible. Through the rear window, I saw that the craft was following us. We slowed down only when we reached the houses near Gerstheim. We felt safe. And we watched the craft that at this time, made a U-turn again. So, we stopped, and we watched it go away. My husband wanted to go back, but I prevented hom to do it..."

The newspaper commented that the testimony is particularly interesting because the credibility of the three people cannot be doubted. Recalling that the Rhine banks was frequently "visited" by UFOs, they feel that it was probably not a military helicopter maneuvering, mainly because their lights are white, not yellow.

On August 15, 1977, the newspaper Le Parisien published a summary of the case, adding that according to the Gendarmes, there was no helicopter there at the time of the observation.

In 1978, in the ufology magazine Ouranos, we find the account of the sighting practically as it had been given in the Press; a magazine's investigator, Jean-Paul Bresch, said he obtained few additional details from witnesses, noting this:

It seems that the occupants of the car, apart from Mr. J.R., were terrified by the appearance of the object launched in their pursuit. The latter appeared like a dark cylindrical mass provided with two powerful "headlights" as well as small red lights which turned around the U.F.O. in its displacement. Its surface seemed metallic, because by the time it was only a hundred yards from the car, the dark part reflected the moonlight, clearly visible in the sky that night.

A flying saucer in the Alsatian sky:
A puzzling testimony seems to confirm it

A strange light phenomenon was observed by a Strasbourg couple traveling on the EDF road, in the direction Rhinau to Strasbourg, on the night of Thursday to Friday, at 11:45 p.m.. On board the vehicle were the driver, M. J., who lives Neudorf, his wife, their young son, and the younger sister of Ms. J., a 14-year-old girl.

Still under the influence of an understandable emotion, Mrs. J. told us: "We were returning from a family evening, when at the height of the Rhinau tray, my husband saw two lights above the trees, slightly to his left. He asked me what it was and I told him a plane. That's when my sister suggested that it was a flying saucer."

This testimony is particularly interesting, since it emanates from three people whose good faith cannot be doubted. Anyway, the Rhine banks were frequently "visited" by the unidentified flying objects: an additional testimony to this effect therefore is not surprising; moreover, it does not seem that a military helicopter was maneuvering to that place (and their lights are white, not yellow).

Anyway we now have to dig into the case and try to compare these testimonies with others.

U.F.O. in the sky of Alsace

STRASBOURG. - A couple of Alsatians, Mr. and Mrs. Joly, of Strasbourg-Neudorf, their son and a sister of Mrs. Joly observed, just before midnight, a strange celestial phenomenon, while they circulated by car on the E.D.F. road Rhinau-Strasbourg.

They stated that they saw an object with "yellow lighted lights, directed horizontally in relation to itself, and several other, red, lights".

The U.F.O., they added, initially moved in the opposite direction of the car, then made a U-turn very quickly to join the motorists before starting again in the opposite direction, always at high speed.

According to the gendarmes, no helicopters were flying over the area at that time.

INVESTIGATION - CFRU ALSACE FILE

UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECTS IN ALSACE

On the night of August 11, 1977, various witnesses observed an unidentified flying object. We went to the scene and to the majority of the witnesses. And, at present, we continue to record and screen witness statements.

The observations last from 10 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., in short, several hours of flight over Alsatian soil. The line followed totally intersects the subsequent investigation in short, a route following the shape of a "Y" practically along the Rhine up to Strasbourg to separate there, either in the direction of ST-DIE in the Vosges, or towards the north of Alsace, passing WISSEMBOURG, towards the North Sea.

The shape of the object - and there ALL the testimonies overlap - was circular; the craft presented a red color WHEN STOPPED, turning to yellow when it moved. Some witnesses note smaller lights on the craft, flashing red lights moving along the outer circle of the UFO.

It should be noted that several witnesses felt an impression of anguish during the observation, anguish being in no way due to fear, but approaching a kind of oppression difficult to define.

We noted - in one of the statements - that the witnesses' dog kept moaning and panting, these unusual moans waking them up, allowing them to carry out their observation.

Subsequently, telephone calls and other statements were to allow us to locate the line of flight of the craft as observations were made by the witnesses, in particular in relation to the times indicated. The flying craft coming from RHINAU-GERSTHEIM then headed towards SCHIRMECK to move away towards ST-DIE, place of the last observation.

We noted, moreover, that - for the third consecutive time - the UFOs observed by witnesses in the Strasbourg sky are circular in shape, have a red color when stationary, yellow when moving, and that, in any case - if they are present - the dogs and other animals show flagrant signs of insecurity (groans, tremors, gasps...) In 80% of the cases, it is firstly the dogs who have warned their masters.

In addition, it is particularly interesting to note that 90% of witnesses feel:

1/ a feeling close to anxiety that is difficult to explain, not assimilable to fear but oppressive, a feeling still perceptible most often several days or even weeks after the observation...

2/ absolute certainty regarding sightings.

3/ an unshakable conviction of an "other origin" of the craft.

4/ a systematic impossibility to film the event.

The witnesses do not know each other and yet the descriptions are consistent (colors, places, shape absolutely identical).

It is confirmed, once again, that the occupants of the UFOs PSYCHICALLY influence the witnesses. In addition, the theory of magnetic propulsion (voluntarily simplified name in this context) seems very plausible because of the disturbances of watches and the ignition problems on vehicles reported. It turns out that an ultrasound emission sensitizes the animals. THIS IS REALLY A UFO.

INVESTIGATIONS

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENTS

NEAR STRASBOURG,
A UFO FOLLOWS
A CAR.

Around 3:45 a.m., on August 11, 1977, in Gertheim [sic] (village located about twenty kilometers from Strasbourg, on the N.925) four people, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. (anonymity requested), their son and Mrs. J.R.'s sister returned from an evening spent with their family. The night is clear, cloudless, and the Moon shows in all clarity.

Mr. J.R., driver of the car, suddenly sees large yellow "headlights" shining on the left side, low above a cluster of trees. He first thinks of an airplane, but, as the lights seem to remain stationary, he stops his vehicle by pulling it over to the side of the road and rolls down the front window, to better conduct his observation.

The object was there, silent and motionless, emitting long yellow beams of light directed horizontally to the ground. Other small red lights were also visible, two of which were located between the two "headlights".

Suddenly it started to move, moving a short distance. At that moment, Mrs. J.R. became frightened and asked her husband to start again, which he did, while continuing to observe the object which was now moving slowly, at a little distance from the ground and going in a direction opposite to that of the car, this for a short time however, because it carried out a U-turn to return immediately in direction of the car which it paced while approaching very quickly. The object was, at this time, at a very low altitude above the road, the "headlights" directed towards the rear of the car, while the small red lights were animated by a movement of rotation, while blinking like flashes.

Mrs. J.R. and the other passengers were overcome with panic fear, she begged her husband to speed up. The object was still following them, coming closer, to then maintain a certain distance until the car had reached the first houses of the village of Gertheim. Through the rear window the passengers could see the object which made a U-turn. More reassured, Mr. J.R. stopped his vehicle once again and, from the village, he witnessed its disappearance, in the depths of the night.

Following the investigation carried out by our correspondent, Mr. J.P. Bresch, it was difficult to obtain more details on the characteristics of the craft.

Former journalist Christian Valentin published in 2012 a very interesting book telling the story of UFO sightings, flying saucers sightings, in Alsace, from the beginning to 1980.

In this book, he reports that on the night of August 11, 1977, there were sightings reported in Les DernièRes Nouvelles d'Alsace for August 13, 1977:

About Christian Valentin's book:

It is not at all my habit to "advertise" a book or anything, and I have no interested relationship with the author, but I wanted to say a word on the book by Christian Valentin, "Mythes et Réalités des Phénomènes Aériens Non Identifiés" (i.e. "Myths and Realities of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena" (cover on the left) , ref. [cv2]; which, as its subtitle indicates, is about Alsatian UFO sighting reports and the saucer lore in Alsace.

I think Alsatian ufologists and, generally, people interested in the UFO question, or in the history of Alsace, my region, would probably like this book.

The 144 pages book is sober but well presented, unbiased, richly documented and illustrated. It is the first work in print specifically about UFO sightings in Alsace. (There was another one a few years ago, but it was partly made by copying - pasting without mention of the sources, portions of my website, especially the Alsatians cases I almost exhaustively documented in my catalog of UFO sightings in France in 1954, and copies from another websites; the trivial explanations I proposed or gave there being almost always stripped off!)

The author does not want to prove or disprove the possibility of extraterrestrial visitors or some other so-called "extraordinary" explanation, he rather offers a chronologically ordered review of Alsatian UFO reports, starting from the origin and stopping in 1980, based on known sources ufology, on the articles of the regional Press, and cases less known or even unreleased so far that he collected directly with the witnesses. His own comments are printed in a different color, references to the sources are always given. A very nice work in my opinion!

The author currently has a blog where he shows what libraries in Alsace have the book available, see: christian.valentin.overblog.com

About the case:

Map.

The path of the witnesses is shown below; they traveled along the EDF (national power company) road, aka "Rundkopf", from the Rhinau ferry to the first houses of Gerstheim.

Map.

The trip is 7 to 8 kilometers long.

In the absence of any pubilshed investigation, and lack of precise quantitative data such as angular size, elevation, precise directions, it will hardly be possible for me to give a definite explanation. This remains an "unidentified" for me, but of moderate realiability and strangeness.

Evaluation:

Unidentified, low strangeness.
