October 14, 1954, Ciry-le-Noble, Saône-et-Loire:

Summary:

In L'Astronomie, review of the Astronomical Society of France, meeting minutes of November 7, 1954, Vol. 28, page 469, of December 1954, there was a report of a "suspicious object" by Mr. G. Mouillon, engineer in Génelard in Saône-et-Loire.

He had observed on October 14, 1954, at 08:50 p.m., between Ciry-le-Noble and Montceau-les-Mines, a "huge object surrounded by a green flame arriving at the ground in rapid fall, on a vertical height of about 10°. The object was certainly several degrees wide (maybe 5.) No noise was perceived."

What seems to have been a meteor then entered without this explanation in the ufological literature via Jacques Vallée, Aimé Michel, and others.

Reports:

[Ref. ast1:] "L'ASTRONOMIE" MAGAZINE:

Suspicious object. -- Mr. G. MOUILLON, engineer in Génelard (the Saone-et-Loire), observed on October 14 at 08:50 p.m., between Ciry-le-Noble and Montceau-les-Mines an enormous object surrounded by a green flame arriving on the ground in fast fall, on a vertical height of 10° approximately. The object was certainly several degrees broad (perhaps 5). No noise was perceived.

[Ref. aml5:] AIME MICHEL:

An odd straight line.

At the time I undertook (after many other attempts) to study the arrangement of observations on a map region by region, when something curious caught my attention to the Center-East of France. From South of Poligny to a spot located near Gueugnon, in the Saôone-et-Loire, five observations made a rigorously rectilinear arrangement over a distance of 150 kilometers.

Along this line, from East to West, were the observations of the Wood of Poligny, of Saint-Germain du Bois, of Saint-Romain sous Gourdon, of the Departmental 60 near Ciry le Noble, and Departmental 25 near Chazey Wood. While checking their date I discovered with astonishment that all these cases were all of October 14, then that on the 5 observations, one (Saint-Germain) was a luminous object on the ground, the next one (Saint-Romain) an immobile luminous object, placed on the ground, blocking an engine and extinguishing a headlight, the third a luminous object flying over the country-side (Departmental 60), the fourth a similar object blocking an engine and extinguishing headlights. Only the observation of Poligny could at best be taken for a meteor. All the others had the most incredible characters attributed to the saucers.

This first straight line gave me another idea: since 5 cases of October 14 were aligned, why not examine whether the other cases of the same day did not also present some interesting positions? I discovered then, this same day, a new alignment of 4 observations: Poligny (already on the other line), Palleau (Saône-et-Loire), Meursanges (Côte d'Or), and finally, 460 kilometers away, Méral, in the Mayenne. And Méral was also a ground observation [but the 11th and not the 14th].

[Ref. ldl1:] MAGAZINE D'UFOLOGIE "LUMIERES DANS LA NUIT":

In 1954:

engineer in Génelard (Saône et Loire) observed on October 14 at 8: 50 m. pm. between Ciry-le-Noble and Montceau-les-Mines, a huge object enveloped in a green flame reaching the ground in a rapid fall, on a vertical height of about 10°. The object was certainly several degrees wide (maybe 5). No noise was perceived. (Excerpt from the S.A.F. Bulletin, year 1954 page 475).

[Ref. aml1:] AIME MICHEL:

The author indicates that 10 years after the wave of 1954, Jacques Vallée found another observation of the evening of October 14, 1954, reported by Mr. G. Mouillon, engineer at Génelard (Saône-et-Loire), in l'Astronomie, review of the Astronomical Society of France.

Mr. Mouillon was, about 8:50 p.m. at an undetermined spot between Ciry-le-Noble and Montceau-les-Mines, and saw a luminous object apparently "enormous" (maybe five degrees), descending noiselessly towards the ground.

Aimé Michel notes that one can unfortunately not locate the place of observation, made more than an hour after the series he reported for this evening, and which he says "shows a prolonged activity on a relatively small area."

[Ref. jve1:] JACQUES VALLEE:

The author indicates that in "L'Astronomie" in 1954 the following report appeared:

Suspicious object: M. G. Mouillon, engineer in Génelard, Saone-et-Loire, has observed, on October 14 at 8:05 p.m., between Ciry-le-Noble and Montceau-les-Mines, an enormous object surrounded with a green flame quickly falling to the ground over an area of about 10° in elevation [sic]. The object itself had an apparent diameter of several degrees, maybe as much as five degrees. No Noise was heard."

[Ref. aml4:] AIME MICHEL:

Then, one day, I thought I saw the beginning of the light. Studying the cases of October 14 on a map of Burgundy, I was struck by thr fact that five of them (Poligny, (Saint-Germain-du-Bois, (Les Brosses-Tillot, (Nationale 60 and (the Wood of Chazey) were on a straight line. I then looked for other straight lines, and found a lot of them. Many were dubious, but some of them seemed to defy chance.

[Ref. fru1:] MICHEL FIGUET AND JEAN-LOUIS RUCHON:

The two authors indicate that on October 14, 1954 at 08:50 p.m. in Ciry le Noble in the department of Saône et Loire, a person circulating between Ciry-the-Noble and Montceau-the-Mines saw a luminous object apparently "enormous" descending without noise towards the ground.

The authors indicate that the source is L'Astronomie, magazine of the French Astronomy Society, cited by Jacques Vallée, and Aimé Michel in "A Propos des S.V." page 214.

[Ref. mft1:] FRANCAT - MICHEL FIGUET:

In an extract of his Francat catalogue, Michel Figuet recorded that the case of the CE0 type between Geugnon and Ciry-the-Noble was in the twilight, a "confusion with the fall of a fireball."

[Ref. jca1:] JACQUES COSTAGLIOLA:

The author indicates that on October 14, 1954, at 20:50 between Ciry-le-Noble and Montceau-les-Mines, G Mouillon, engineer, Génelard, sees an enormous object wrapped of a green flame arrive on the ground in fast fall on a vertical height of 10° approximately. The object was certainly several degrees broad, perhaps 5°. No noise was heard.

Evaluation - Meteor

Explanations:

Map.

Obvious description of a meteor.

The witness reports this meteor 3 months later perhaps, and the hour may be incorrect, since the same object, a meteor, was reported in the same area and elsewhere at that date, but around 06:10 p.m..
