THE pilots of the Orange-Caritat base (Vaucluse) could for a moment yesterday believe that they were finally going to get to the bottom of this flying saucer story: the presence of one of them, apparently particularly well-behaved, had just been reported above Fontaine-de-Vaucluse.
According to a telephone call around 1 p.m. from the secretary of the town hall, they could not miss the opportunity.
"I am calling you," he said, "because you are fighter pilots, to inform you that for about an hour now a flying saucer has been standing motionless in the sky, exactly above the village town hall."
Despite his skepticism, the base commander, who wanted to be sure of it, called the mayor personally, who confirmed:
"The saucer," he replied, "is motionless. It is still in front of the eyes of the villagers who have gathered in the square, and it is at an altitude of about four hundred meters."
