OTAGO SPECULATION.
"Civis," in the Otago Daily Times says "Until the phantom airship pay Dunedin a visit, a daylight visit, circle the Octagon, and descends for official examination at the Town Hall steps, I accept the doctrine delivered by Mr Robert Grigor, of Balclutha, and shall therein abide. 'A visitation from an other world', is Mr Grigor's summing up of the phenomena. Columbus the Second has navigated across from Mars. The thing is really quite simple. Le there be a crew of Martians in an airtight cylinder, supplied with compressed air from their own atmosphere, capable of keeping them alive for an indefinite period, with radium as a motive power and for light. Thus Mr Grigor; and he continues: 'They arrive in our atmosphere in the vicinity of New Zealand and are hovering around to get accustomed to out atmosphere. They see the electric light at Kaitangata and the light around the Waikaka dredges and Mataura, and they are seen at Kelso and at Invercargillj which is probably the largest town they have as yet been able to discover. They seem to be able to live at an altitude of 3000 ft or 4000 ft and their first landing will certainly be at that height on some of our highlands.' If 100 day out from Mars short of provisions and water, and unable to communicate, their case appeals to our humanitiy. But 'Mr Grigor invokes the Government, which is not at all the same thing. The Government's first act would be to apply the reading and writing-test, find them wanting, and dismiss the celestial strangers intto space again as undesirable immigrants.
