Pendleton, Oregon -- Residents of Pendleton, Oregon, are all talking about one thing today -- nine strange saucer-shaped planes an amateur pilot claims he saw yesterday.
The pilot -- Kenneth Arnold of Boise, Idaho -- says the planes were flying across southwestern Washington at an estimated speed of 1,200 miles an hour. He describes them as extremely shiny, nickel-plated aircraft, shaped like saucers and so thin he could barely see them.
Arnold says there were nine of the planes flying in a peculiar formation 25 miles away from him. He says he clocked the time it took them to fly from Mount Rainier to mount Adams and figured they were flying more than 1,200 miles an hour.
Some Pendleton residents think Arnold just imagined he saw the strange craft, but the salesman says:
"I must believe my eyes."
Military authorities have no comment on the story.
