Washtenaw Deputy 'Snaps' Flying Object
Captures UFO On Photograph

Ann Arbor (AP) - A Michigan deputy sheriff said an unidentified flying object sighted over southern Michigan last week was trapped - on film - and still another UFO was reported Thursday.

Deputy Sheriff David Fitzpatrick of Washtenaw County took the photographs with a tiny camera roughly the size of a man's two forefingers held together.

Prints were delayed because the tiny film had to be sent to Forest Hills N.Y., for development.

The new sighting of an unidentified flying object near Holland came from both Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nichols, who live near Saugatuck. They said it flew across a highway ahead of them in plain view, no more than 150 to 200 feet high.

Nichols, 24, said the object appeared about half the size of an automobile and was "a round circle glowing red on the inside and white on the outside."

Nichols added he was absolutely certain about one thing, "It sure didn't look like any airplane."

He said he called the Holland police, who in turn notified the Allegan County sheriff's department.

Deputy Rudy Whitney said a search in darkness turned up nothing unusual. Deputies were alerted at 6:15 p.m. Another search was planned for today.

Nichols description fits roughly that given by several of more than a score who have reported sightings in the Ann Arbor area in the last 10 years.

Deputy Fitzpatrick however, said the two objects he photographed gave off a brilliant yellow-white light in graceful swoops which he and Sheriff's Sgt. Nuel K. Schneider observed from about 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. March 16.

Fitzpatrick set his subminiature camera on a tripod outside nearby Milan and said he held the time exposure open 10-12 minutes.

Mystery Divides Local Followers

The Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) incident has divided the people of the area into three camps: believers, nonbelievers and the maybe-so-ers.

Claims of sightings have diminished until there were only several reports Thursday night.

One sighting was investigated by two newsmen.

The object, which witnesses claimed was almost identical to the one sighted Wednesday night, only further away, was a brilliant white.

It was kept under observation for almost an hour and during that time did not change its location in relation to two stars used as reference points.

And, comparison of the object, through field glasses, with stars in the western sky disclosed a striking similarity.

At least one other sighting has been reported from Thursday night but the witnesses have refused to be identified or to give any details.

Meanwhile, explanations for the objects are a dime-a-dozen and the debate continues hot and heavy between the believers and the nonbelievers while the maybe-so-ers stand on the sidelines and chuckle.
