FOIA declassified documents:

This is a US document, declassified because of the US Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) of 1977.

Hilarious provocative report, 1952:

This Major Colburn writes to the Army Intelligence to announce that he has discovered recently a report of a flying saucer type incident which occured during the Civil War on October 1, 1863.

Please read between the lines. You will absolutely enjoy this unique piece of military provocation from Major Colburn, obviously a witty and independant minded officer. and certain a man of some courage:

"I have no way of knowing the importance placed by your office on this type of reports..."

Oh, come on, Major: you might have no way of knowing, but we highly suspect that you were intelligent enough to take a guess... I am quite sure that you know very well what the fate of your letter will be.

"This report is rather long ..."

Yes, the investigation office will have a hard time with so much to read. It is so annoying to read things. Especially long reports. Poor OMI people. Why did you put this burden on them? Have mercy, Major.

"...this book is quite common. If your office cannot find a copy..."

Major your are really mean: you made it clear that the book is easy to find, and next you suspect the OMI would maybe be to stupid to find it and you offer your help. You even offer to send it to any agency they would indicate. And obviously you give the book for free. Major, you and me would have been good friends.

SUBJECT: Flying Saucer Report:

I discovered recently a report of a flying saucer type incident which occurred during the Civil War on October 1, 1865. I am reporting it only because it closely resembles those recently given in Life magazine, and appears that it may be authentic.

I have no way of knowing the importance placed by your office on this type of report or wether the report has previously been discovered. If evaluation indicates it to be authentic, itts primary importance would be a further indication that the flying saucer is not a new development of an earth type aircraft.

This report can be found on page 373 of the book "Anecdotes, Poetry, and Incidents, of the War, North and South, 1860-1865" by Frank Moore, printed in 1866. This report is rather long and I understand that this book is quite common. If your office cannot find a copy I will place mine at the disposal of any agency you may direct. I am an officer in an organized reserve unit and will forward a true copy of the original through military channels if you desire.
