On September 17, 1978, between 08:15 p.m. and 08:20 p.m., Mrs. Ultimina Boseagli and her son Riccardo, 12 years old, both from Torrita di Siena, Siena, Italy, heard an intense noise "like a round of artillery fire" from where they were standing, in the street in front of their house on the Pie agli Orti street in Torrita di Siena.
They looked up, and saw a "fireball with yellow-orange contours and a reddish trail." The lower part of this round-shaped thing was of reddish in color, and the upper part of a very bright white. In a blinding dazzle, it suddenly vanished.
Mrs. Boscagli and her son were so frightened that they quickly retreated into their house.
Mrs. Santina Faralli was indoors watching television and she heard the noise and was aware of the dazzling light outside.
She said the electric lights extinguished suddenly, then came back on.
Soon after that, her son Rivo Faralli, 25 years old, barber, arrived at her house, where he stayed for about half an hour. Then, at about 09:00 p.m. he left, got into his Fiat 127 car, started up and moved off.

He had driven only a few meters when the car stalled and stopped. While he was still puzzled, a strange bright object, preceeded by a beam of red light, landed on the road in front of him. The lower part of the object was discoidal in shape while the upper part was hemispherical and orange in color like "the color", or "the shape" - depending on the versions - of "a priest's hat". It was so bright that it illuminated the area around it, and it appeared to be standing on the road on three irridescent beams of light varying from yellow, to green, to red, to sky blue colors. The object had a diameter of 3 meters and it covered all the road width, touching a dry stone wall at one edge of the road. It hung in the air at about the height of the Fiat 127's bonnet.
Suddenly, on the object, a "port" opened in the manner of a double door, one part to the left, the other to the right. Two beings emerged and descended in a fluctuating motion until they were about 10 centimeters from the ground.
They were about 1.00 to 1.10 meters in height. In that position their heads were level with Rivo Faralli's face as he sat in his car, and that is how he estimated the entities' height.
They wore green "coveralls", that seemed to be of one piece, neither close-fitting nor large; indeed, the shapes of their limbs were visible and their proportions appeared normal.
They had big helmets, and a part of these helmets was transparent. The fronts of the helmets had what seemed to be two slender cylindrical protuberances like springs, or similar helical structures.
The creatures' skin seemed also to be green, and while their faces were to a degree human-like, they were lean with bony, arched cheeks, regular noses and thin lipless mouths. Mr. Faralli could not see their eyes and ears as they were hidden in a shaded zone.
They walked towards the car. Their gait was awkward as they encircled the vehicle. They seemed to have more interest in the car than in its owner, and when they were behind him he could still see them by the driving mirror. In fact Rivo noticed that their awkwardness seemed more marked. After completing this round trip, they headed back for the UFO in which they ascended with the same fluctuating motion as they had displayed when descending.
Once aboard, the first of them settled in the bright hemispherical domed section. Faralli could not say whether the entity was sitting or standing, as he could only see its head and part of its back.
Before entering the craft, that second entity had turned back and looked at the witness as though it wanted to say something, then turned away, entered the craft and took position beside his companion.
The port shut, and from the lower part of the craft's "body", came two very intense beams, whereupon the craft rose vertically for about 10 meters, then shot away in level flight leaving a bright horizontal trail.
As the craft disappeared, the car's headlights came back on, and since a gear was still engaged, the car started to move forward without any action by Rivo Faralli. He had not touched the controls when the craft first appeared as he was at first stupefied and bewildered, and then almost paralyzed with terror.
For three days after the incident, Rivo Faralli experienced "burning" eyes.
It was reported that in the next street, at about 09:30 p.m. on the same evening, several television receivers went off for about a minute, and then came back on.
Three days earlier, a Mr. Viero Foianesi had seen a shining flying object in the same area.
When Dr. Roberto Pinotti, the CUN investigator, went to landing spot with Gianfranco Rudoni, they found some strange traces in the road. In the middle was a black circle, 50 centimeters in diameter. It appeared to have been caused by considerable heat. To the right and to the left of this circle were two other traces of "fire", one close to some bushes where there were stones, broken, burned and hard but very lightweight.
Two samples of soil were taken, one from the area where the surface was scorched, the other from beyond the burnt ground. It had rained before the samples were taken. The samples, and some blackened gravel picked up by Rivo Faralli the following day, were subjected to chemical analysis by CUN consultants in the Euratom laboratories of Ispra. Analyses of magnetism, radioactivity, of fluorescence, X rays and carbon rate were undertaken.
The results were not very conclusive. There was neither magnetization nor much radioactivity, other than minute traces above the lower limit of the testing equipment. No abnormal element or compound was found.
An Italian catalogue of reported UFO landing traces suggest about year 2005 that the traces were the remainders of a pork meat grill, ensuring that the available information about the traces were rather approximate.
Dr. Pinotti's report included photographs of the place, of the witness, and sketches of the UFO and occupants in his report. These are available below in this file.
Rivo Faralli obviously maintained his report. In the national newspaper la Nazione for December 6, 2011, he insisted he was not drunk and did not make up the story. he said:
"They floated in the air, not very high. They seemed to have thin faces, one could see this a little through the helmet's front. They turned around my 127, seeming more interested in it than in me. Then they left." He was able to return home. "Stupor. I was late, my wife asked for an explanation. I could not say anything to her, I was in a state of shock. It is only later... I did not tell people what had happened, I was afraid not to be believed, to be called a crackpot. I did not go to the police force. Then the rumor spread, and my life became hell" - as many people went to see him about his report.
"Roberto Pinotti of the National Ufology Center came to listen to my story, heard my mother and other people involved. On the pavement remained three dark spots, as if that had been burned at high temperature. Everyone, then, took stones which were really analyzed by the experts who were drilling for samples. During more than a month one knocked at my door constantly day or night, normal people, who came from La Spezia and other parts of Italy, the newspapers and television. I was also interviewed by La Nazione. Everyone wanted to know, everyone wanted that I repeat what I had seen."
"The eyes which burned, it passed then. Especially, during a few years, I had been afraid, even to move from one room to another. I was taken along to the sienna hospital because I was depressed, I was sick. I did not have any disease, this was the psychological consequences of this event. I was hypnotized, one tried to check if I had visions."

EFFECTS AND ENTITIES AT TORRITA DI SIENARoberto Pinotti Dr. Pinotti is Vice-President of the Italian National UFO Research Centre (C.U.N.) which has its headquarters at Via Vignole 3, 30136, Milan. He himself lives in Firenze (Florence). This article is based on a translation by Maurizio Verga. INTRODUCTION During 1978 there were in Italy some very interesting UFO landings, with occupants reported. The subject of Dr. Pinotti's article is a landing near Siena in Tuscany during September of that year, and it was part of an intense wave which was located principally in Central and Southern Italy. There was a massive onset of the UFO phenomenon between the 13th and 20th September, with a "peak" in the number of reports on the 14th with more than 40 incidents, and an overall total of 120 cases. It should be noted that in this figure there are several reports of objects readily explainable as natural phenomena or man-made artifacts, reports generated no doubt by the effects of the heavy TV, radio and press coverage of the main UFO sightings and encounters. One of these was the close encounter of the third kind with EM effects which was reported from the province of Siena. The investigation of this incident was carried out by Dr. Roberto Pinotti, the leading authority of Italian ufology and well.known to FSR readers, who also edits the excellent review Notiziario UFO which is devoted to ufology and astronautics. Dr. Pinotti was assisted in his investigation by Sig. Gianfranco Rudoni and by a colonel of the Italian Army. Richard Hall indicates that at Torrita di Siena, on September 17, 1978, about 08:15 p.m., a woman and her son saw a descending red ball illuminating the area, and watched houselights in the area black out. Shortly afterwards, a barber got into his car, drove a few meters, and suddenly his engine and lights went out and a bright object descended over the road just ahead of his car. Hovering about a half-meter above the road was a 3-meter diameter orange-red object with a dome, appearing hat-like in shape. Three light beams were extending from the object to the road. A panel opened and two humanoids emerged and "floated" toward the car, their feet never touching the ground. They were about 1-2 meters tall, wearing green coveralls and helmets with two protrusions or "aerials". The beings circled the car, apparently more interested in it than in the passengers, then re-entered the UFO which took off with a flash of light and explosive sound. Three scorched circles about 50 cm in diameter and about 4 meters apart were found on the road surface, apparently corresponding to the three light beams from the UFO. Soil and trace analyses did not show anything extraordinary.
Richard Hall indicates the case as one of a major wave of UFO sightings in Italy during 1978, mostly in the period from October through the first few days of January 1979, with more than 500 cases on record, with at least 130 of them close encounters, 25 involving humanoid entities. These sightings led to unprecedented public discussion and debate, even in the Italian Parliament, and were essentially ignored by conventional news media in the United States.

One of these appearances, an interesting encounter, well investigated, of the third kind with UFO phenomena, took place in the province of Siena. The investigation of this accident was made by Dr. Roberto Pinotti (the very big boss of Italian UFO science, very known also by the readers of FSR. He is the vice-president of "Centro Ufologico Nazionale", the very large Italian UFO research organization, with his offices in Milan (3 street Vignola). Dr. Pinotti is the director of the magazine "Notiziario UFO", an excellent magazine, which deals with UFO science and astronautics. He is also the author of 3 books on the UFOs), and by Mr. Gianfranco Rudoni, and a colonel of the Italian army. THE CASEOn September 17, 1978, in Torrita di Siena, at 08:15 p.m., 08:20 p.,., Mrs. Ultimina Boscagli and her son Ricardo, 12 years old, heard a very intense noise, like a "great gun shot" and they saw a ball of fire, with orange yellow contours which left a red trail. Then it disappeared suddenly, in a blinding light. The object of round form was reddish in its lower part (below) and of a very shining white in its higher part. The two witnesses were very afraid and returned to the house for they were in the street opposite their residence (via piè agli Orti). Other people also observed the phenomenon: Mrs. Santina Faralli, who was looking at television, confirmed the noise and the dazzling light. She says that the electric light died out suddenly, then re-ignited. The son of Mrs. Faralli, Rivo (a barber), 25 years old, arrived at his mother's house a little later and stayed there for approximately half an hour, then (at about 9 p.m.) he came out and started the engine of his FIAT 127. The car moved a few meters, then it stalled and the electric system ceased functioning, when a strange shining object landed in front of Mr. Faralli's car. It was preceded by a red ray, it was of discoid shape in its lower part, of shining red color, and hemispherical form in its higher part, of orange color, like a "bowler hat". Its light illuminated all its surroundings like in full day. In the lower part of the object which stood on the road on three iridescent rays going from the yellow to the green, the red, the blue, there was a great beam of light which "beat" the ground. The object was three meters in diameter and it occupied all the roadway (it almost seemed to touch a wall at an edge). It hovered in the air, at the height of the FIAT 127's hood. Suddenly, on the supposed UFO, a port opened in two parts (one on the right, the other on the left) and two beings went down from the object oscillating in the air, until arriving at 10 cms of the ground. They measured: 1,10 m / 1 m (they arrived at the height of the face of the witness who was sitting in the car, the 10 cms starting from the observed ground) and they had a green outfit with a large helmet with a transparent part. Their skin seemed of green color, they had human faces but flattened and thin with salliant cheek bones and a thin mouth (like a slit) without lips, and a regular nose. The witness could not see the eyes and the ears, because they were hidden by a zone of shade (a cone of shadow). Before [sic, "at the front"], the helmet had two thin cylindrical protuberances like a spring or some other similar spiral structure. Their outift was of only one part, it was neither sticking, nor broad. The members were visible and their proportions were normal. The two beings approached the car and walked around awkwardly (they circled it). They showed more interest in Faralli's car than to the witness, who could also see them in the rear view mirror (when they were behind the FIAT 127). They seemed disturbed and constrained for they walked heavily and awkwardly. Then they went, still while oscillating, in direction of the object. One of them settled in the shining dome (sat or upright? The witness saw only his head and his back), while the other looked back for a while. He stopped and looked at Mr. Faralli, as if he wanted to say something. Then it went up on board the strange brilliant object and put himself beside the other. They were again in front of Mr. Faralli and the port closed again. From the lower part of the object two very intense luminous rays came and the strange ship rose vertically on 10 meters approximately then it progressed very quickly in a level flight, leaving a brilliant horizontal trail. When the object disappeared, the engine of the car (which had been choked) and the headlights restarted automatically, and since a gear was already engaged, the car drove again by itself, as if the engine had never stopped (when the car had stopped, Mr. Faralli had not made any maneuver). No noise was noticed during the observation. The initially amazed and then puzzled witness was struck of terror. During three days, Mr. Faralli had a "disorder" of the sight, like a burn. In a close street, at 9:30 p.m., the TV sets died out during about one minute, then all became normal again. THE TRACES:The two investigators of the C.U.N., Dr. Roberto Pinotti and Mr. Gianfranco Rudoni found, at the place of the observations, strange traces. In the middle of the road, a black circle 50 cm in diameter, probably caused by heat. On its left and its right side, there were two other traces of fire. One of it was dominated by dry shrubs. One found burned matter, broken stones (by heat?) burned and hard, but very light substances. Two ground "samples" appeared: one inside the burned part, the other outside. These superficially blackened parts and some gravels (collected by Mr. Faralli the next day) were subjected to chemical analyses in the EURATOM laboratories in Ispra (by the consultants of Centro Ufologico Nazionale). Analyses of the radioactivity, fluorescence and x-rays as well as carbon rate (by combustion at 1100°C with oxygen current and measurement of carbon dioxide) were carried out. By bad luck the results were not very interesting. The samples proved neither magnetized nor radioactive, but they presented traces of activity against the background noise (ascribable to the limits of position of the observation apparatus, but also to possible active residues, degraded by rainwater). No element or abnormal compound was found. For the analysis, the evidences were subjected to a temperature never higher than 500°C. CONCLUSION WITH PRESENTATION OF ANOTHER ITALIAN ENCOUNTER OF THE 3RD KIND.The encounter of the 3rd kind of Torrita di Siena is very interesting because of some strange characteristic, like one of the EM effects on the car of Mr. Faralli (for example: did the supposed UFO absorb electrical power produced by the dynamo and the battery of the car? or did the object emit "something" which acted on the reel and the ignition and the lighting circuitry (since there was the smothering of the engine)? The assumptions are numerous. Which is most probable? The answer is very difficult, quasi impossible for now). The case, seen by the witness, is completely probable also because little time before the strange encounter, in the same area, a shining object (smaller than the moon) had been seen. (Three days before, a man, Mr. Viero Foianesi, saw, still in the same area, a shining flying object). An identical case occurred on December 18, 1962 at 2:20 in the morning in Milan: it is "Il Corriere della Sera" that submitted a report of this accident on December 1962. The case of Torrita di Siena is not the only encounter of the 3rd type that happened in Italy in 1978. That year many other similar cases took place. |

The ufologist indicates that on 9/17/78 in Torrita di Sienna, Italy, two 3.5 feet tall beings wearing helmets with aerial-like protrusion, in green clothing, floated out of a low-hovering UFO, circled a car and re-entered the UFO. Electromagnetic effects had stopped the car. The UFO took of with a light flash and an explosive sound. Scorch marks were found on the road.

After a few meters the engine stalled and Faralli, terrified, saw a luminous half-sphere come down to the middle of the road. It radiated beams of light in all directions. Its diameter at the base was about 3 meters and it hovered at the height of the car's roof.
At some time, a wall of the object opened and two humanoids floated out. They were about 1 meter tall, in green coveralls with a large transparent helmet, and they skin was also green. the face seemed skinny and the mouth had no lips. On the helmets were protrusions that looked like propellers or springs. The body proportion were in harmony, despite their small size.
They seemed more interested by the car than by the witness, turned around the car, then went back to the object which took off fast and vertically.

Shortly afterwards a barber got in his car and drove a few meters, then his engine and lights went out as a bright object descended over the road just ahead of his car.
Hovering a half-meter (1.5 feet) over the road was a 3 meter (10 feet) diameter domed disc with three light beams extending to the road. A panel opened and 2 humanoids about 1.2 meters (4 FT) tall and wearing green coveralls and helmets with antennae floated toward the car. They circled the car, apparently more interested in it than in the passengers, then they entered the UFO which took off in a flash of light and explosive sound.
Three scorched circles about 50 centimeters in diameter were found on the road surface, apparently corresponding to [?]

Almost immediately the lights went off and just a few moments later a UFO in the shape of a "priest's hat", came down towards the ground, just opposite his car. From the object, a red gleam left in all the directions, and the hull "floated" at the level of the car's roof. The diameter at the base of the incredible aircraft was approximately three feet and at one time the wall opened and two humanoid beings started to float in the air around the Fiat. Terrified, Faralli then saw in the middle of the road a hemisphere of light which irradiated beams of light in all the directions. The basic diameter was approximately three meters and it "floated" in the air at the height of the hood of the car. On the object the wall opened and two humanoid beings came out of there while floating in the air. They were approximately three feet tall, wore a green overall and helmets which let see a pale skin, also green. The face was thin at the knobs, the mouth without lips and the helmets had devices similar to propellers. In spite of their small sizes the proportions of the two beings were very "harmonious". They proved more interested by the car that they observed completely, then they climbed on the craft which quickly took off. The story of Rivo the barber who saw ufos
Sienna, December 6, 2011. -- Never pronounce this word: UFO. Unidentified flying objects. Do not speak about aliens, and even less do not describe these "encounters" with a particular accent. Nor talk of the naturalness, the simplicity and the sincerity of those who lived the event. However, he, Rivo Faralli, 57 years old, hairdresser, of Torrita, saw a UFO. Within two steps of his mother'house, that September 14, 1978, it was visiting. His case was studied, and ended in the official journals of the National Ufology Committee (CUN). A story which accompanied him his entire life. "Imagine that they wanted to take me along to America shed light on what I saw," he says in his trade of the station of Torrita, "but I did not want to go. I did not feel like it, it was too much for me." Everyone downtown knows about ti. What occurred, but also that Rivo is a serious person. In this place he managed for 38 years, in addition to the photographs of his stepdaughter, who died prematurely, there is the story of other who were in his life. "This sketch was made by the famous Molino", he explains. "Based on the description that I had given at the time of the beings that I saw." Where did it happen? "In via Piè agli Orti in the Refenero area. I left my mother's house, it must have been at 09:30 p.m.. The engine, the headlights of the car died out. More than just a noise, I saw a dazzling, phosphorescent light. What did I do? I remained motionless. Petrified, all the more when from this kind of hat two came out (he does not want to say "two things", ed.)." Two living beings? "They floated in the air, not very high. They seemed to have thin faces, one could see this a little through the helmet's front. They turned around my 127, seeming more interested in it than in me. Then they left." On the pavement remained three dark spots, as if that had been burned at high temperature. Everyone, then, took stones which were really analyzed by the experts who were drilling for samples. During more than a month one knocked at my door constantly day or night, normal people, who came from La Spezia and other parts of Italy, the newspapers and television. I was also interviewed by La Nazione. Everyone wanted to know, everyone wanted that I repeat what I had seen. I agreed to go to Corrado." After that, were there physical consequences of the "encounter"? "The eyes which burned, it passed then. Especially, during a few years, I had been afraid, even to move from one room to another. I was taken along to the sienna hospital because I was depressed, I was sick. I did not have any disease, this was the psychological consequences of this event. I was hypnotized, one tried to check if I had visions." Instead of that, he was not even drunk. "Absolutely not! Of course, it is easy to imagine that the incident caused much irony, somebody said that I had invented everything for publicity." How can you forget? "It is hard, but I am calm. I went on with my life. Of course, it is impossible to forget." Don't say the UFO word, Rivo Faralli. In his heart, despite everything, he still cannot believe that this could have happened. There is only one witness for the observation of the landing and the occupants; however, the additional testimonies do not favor the explanation by an invention, though, this remains a possibility all the same. What seems to be out of the question is a confusion.
Although the reports on the case are rich and numerous, some other information should have been given, such as the durations of the various phases, for example.
It would have been useful to know whether the explanation of the traces by TRACAT is purely speculative or if it resulted from field examination. Indeed it seems a bit odd to me that people would roast pig meat on the surface of the road between two curbs.
