AUGUST 12, 1965, CRUZEIRO, STATE OF SAO PAULO, BRAZIL, JOAO DO RIO:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

It seems that in Cruzeiro, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, according to a France-Presse report for August 14, 1965 from Rio de Janeiro, Joao do Rio, a local railway worker, was quietly fishing in the river Paraiba when a flying saucer landed nearby.

A strange 0.70 meters tall little man with large luminous eyes emerged from it, and told him in perfect Portuguese that he was from a flying saucer from another world, and that he authorized him to relate the occurrence to his fellow countrymen.

Before re-entering the saucer, the little man gave him a strange piece of metal "of a kind that does not exist on Earth, that was now undergoing examination at the laboratories of the Brazilian National Railways Coachbuilding Works to determine its composition."

Neighbors were quoted saying that he had always been regarded as a very serious and entirely reliable individual.

[Ref. gc1:] GORDON CREIGHTON:

The British ufologist indicates that in Cruzeiros, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, according to a France-Presse report for August 14, 1965 from Rio de Janeiro, railway worker Joao do Rio of that village was quietly fishing in the river Paraiba when a flying saucer landed nearby. A strange little man, some 70 centimeters tall, emerged from it, with large luminous eyes, and told him in perfect Portuguese that he was from a flying saucer from another world, and that he authorized him to relate the occurrence to his fellow countrymen.

Before re-entering the saucer, the little man gave him a strange piece of metal of a kind that does not exist on Earth, that was now undergoing examination at the laboratories of the Brazilian National Railways Coachbuilding Works to determine its composition.

Neighbors were quoted saying that he had always been regarded as a very serious and entirely reliable individual.

Creighton comments that the name "Joào do Rio", i.e. "Joan from the River" seems fabricated but that the base of the story might be authentic.

He indicates newspapers that published the story: The Yorkshire Post for August 13, 1965, Jornal do Brasil of Rio de Janeiro, for August 13, 1965, La Cronica, of Buenos Aires, for August 14, 1965, The Yorkshire Post for August 16, 1965.

[Ref. gt1:] GUY TARADE:

The author indicates that the very serious newspaper Jornal do Brasil reported on their front page on August 12, 1965, that the peasant Joao Do Rio, of the State de Sâo Paulo, was quietly fishing on the edges of Rio Paraiba when a visitor from space of a stature of 70 cm approximately and with eyes strangely shining talked to him in Portuguese.

The peasant was authorized by the pilot of the saucer to report their conversation, and before going up in his spacecraft, the extraterrestrial gave him a piece of a metal unknown on the earth for, he said, convincing the skeptics.

Guy Tarade notes that although Joao was regarded as a man of great serious, the laboratory of a nearby factory made the analysis of the curious calling card.

[Ref. ia1:] IRA ADAMS:

Ira Adams compiled a number of newspaper clippings, and said that in Brazil, "Dated August 14, 1965, Joao Do Rios was fishing near Sao Paulo, Brazil, when he saw a small being about 28 inches tall with large luminous eyes. In perfect Portuguese, he told Joao he was from another world, a crewman from a flying object. As proof of his visit he handed Joao a piece of 'unearthly' metal. The metal is now in the hands of the National Railway wagon factory at Cuzeiro where Joao is employed."

[Ref. bh1:] ROBERT E. BARTHOLOMEW AND GEORGE S. HOWARD:

The authors indicate that early in August 1965, in Paraiba, Cruzeiros, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, while quietly fishing in the River Paraiba, Joao do Rio, a railway worker, noticed a saucer land nearby. A strange man just over two tall feet with large luminous eyes approached him and told in perfect Portuguese that he was from a flying saucer from another world. He told him to tell of his contact to fellow countrymen.

Before reentering the saucer, he gave the man a piece of metal, which was later analyzed with inconclusive results.

The authors indicate that the sources are Gordon Creighton, "The Humanoids in Latin America," in Charles Bowen, ed., The Humanoids (Great Britain: Futura), pp. 115-16, citing the Yorkshire Post (August 1965); Jornal do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro, August 13, 1965; La Cronica (Buenos Aires), August 14, 1965.

[Ref. go1:] GODELIEVE VAN OVERMEIRE:

The ufologist indicates that before August 12, 1965, in Sao Paulo in Brazil, Joao Do Rio fished quietly on the edges of the Paraiba when a visitor from space of a stature of 70 cm approximately and with strangely shining eyes called him in Portuguese.

Before climbing up in his spacecraft, the extraterrestrial gave to his interlocutor a piece of unknown metal "to convince the skeptics".

The ufologist indicates that the source is Guy Tarade dans "S.V. et Civilisations d'Outre-Espace", J'ai Lu, 1969, p. 187.

[Ref. jr1:] JEAN-PAUL RONECKER:

The author indicates that in the case of Cruzeiro, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, August 1965, the alien of small size talked a perfect Portuguese, without any accent.

[Ref. ar1:] ALBERT ROSALES:

Albert Rosales indicates in his catalogue that in Cruziero, Santa Caterina, Brazil, on August 14, 1965 in daytime, while Joao Do Rio was fishing, a saucer landed nearby and a little man 28 inches tall with large luminous eyes introduced himself, in perfect Portuguese, as a flying saucer crewmember. He authorized do Rio to tell others about him, and gave him as proof a piece of "unearthly" metal. The metal was under study by the national railroad car factory.

Albert Rosales indicates as source Humcat quoting Reuters dispatch.

[Ref. rl1:] RAFAEL LARA:

Rafael Lara indicates that in Cruzeiros, in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, on August 14, 1965, a railroad worker in Rio de Janeiro named Joao do Rio had a close encounter measuring aproximately 70 centimeters in height, with large luminous eyes recessed in a large bald head, who came out of a flying saucer.

[Ref. ud1:] "UFODNA" WEBSITE:

The web site indicates that on August 14, 1965, in daytime in Cruzeiro, Brazil, a little man, 28 inches tall, introduced himself to a fisherman as a UFOnaut. It had large luminous eyes, spoke perfect Portuguese, gave him "unearthly" metal. Metallic traces found and one disc was observed "by one experienced male witness on a river (Do Rio, J). One dwarf was seen."

The sources are indicated as Webb, David, HUMCAT: Catalogue of Humanoid Reports; MUFON UFO Journal, MUFON; Bowen, Charles, The Humanoids: FSR Special Edition No. 1, FSR, London, 1966; Keel, John A., Strange Creatures From Time and Space, Fawcett T2219, Greenwich, 1970; Pereira, Jader U., Les Extra-Terrestres, Phenomenes Spatiaux, Paris, 1974; Newspaper Clippings.

Points to consider:

It seems that the most original sources are newspapers publishing an unavailable news release, and that all the following sources are only increasingly weakened summaries of that with nobody having looked into the meager and without credibility report.

The remark by Creighton is meaningless: there are indeed people named Joao do Rio in Brazil, it is neither a unlikely name nor a name so usual that it must have been made up. The real mystery is why Creighton argued that the "base of the story might be authentic". Numerous people invented encounters with flying saucer crew and the question is not whether it "might" be authentic but whether it is or not. This demands an investigation, no just an unfounded opinion.

It is interesting to note that skeptic authors Bartholomew and Howard claim that the piece of metal was "later analyzed with inconclusive results" when they obviously only have Creighton as source, who said nothing of any analysis results.
