MARCH 1954, SANTA MARIA, RIO GRANDE DO SUL, BRAZIL, RUBEM HELLWIG

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

British ufologist Gordon Creighton stumbled on a 1965 newspaper story about two claimed encounters 11 years ago in Santa Maria, Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil.

Rubem Hellwig, a rice planter of German origin, claimed that in March 1954, at 05:00 p.m., he was driving home when he noticed a strange object some 50 meters away. It was about the size of a Volkswagen and was shaped like a rugby football.

A man of slim build and brownish complexion, about 1.60 tall, was seated in it, and another outside was picking capon grass and handling it in to him. This man came over to Hellwig, carrying a bottle of reddish liquid, and asked where he could get a small quantity of ammonia that he needed. This request was made in an unknown tongue, yet Hellwig understood it.

He directed him to the drugstore in a nearby town. The man thanked him and returned to the craft.

A circle of bluish yellow luminosity appeared around the craft, "making it appear round," and from each side of the cabin protruded 4 3" tubes; a yellowish flame shot out through these tubes, and the vessel vanished instantly.

Hellwig claimed that early the next day, he encountered the same or a similar machine, sitting on the highway. This time it contained a tall fair complexioned man and two women with slanting eyes and long black hair. All three were dressed alike, in one-piece brown garments resembling suede leather, with a zipper type closure.

They called to Hellwig, and an extensive conversation ensued, the beings using their own language (which has no more than 15 letters, and sounds musical) together with telepathy. He was invited to view the craft, which was less than 10 ft long and transparent in front.

The source gives details of its construction and propulsion. Those people come from a planet "Arion" which is "far beyond the farthest star known to our world," and is ruled by a monarchy. When the UFO departed, there was only a slight breeze, no sound. Some time after this experience, Hellwig 'began to experience mental phenomena which, so far, medicine has been unable either to explain or cure."

After the publication by Gordon Creighton of this story typical of the lore of the alleged "contactees", it was republished in edulcorated summaries in both the convinced and skeptical ufology literature with no more research.

[Ref. gc1:] GORDON CREIGHTON:

Gordon Creighton indicates that it has only recently been revealed that near Santa Maria, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in March 1954, a Brazilian named Rubem Hellwig, of German origin, encountered a craft of another world two times and spoke with its occupants.

The craft was shaped like a melon or a rugby football, was about the size of a Volkswagen car, and was standing not far from the road on which Hellwig was driving, at 05:00 p.m. He stopped and walked over.

The crew were two men of slim build, about 1.60 meters tall, with brownish faces and not wearing helmets. One was inside the machine and the other was collecting specimens of grass.

They spoke to Hellwig in a strange language and yet somehow he says he understood what they asked, which was where they could get some ammonia. He directed them to a nearby town.

The craft vanished silently and instantly with blue and yellow flames and great luminosity.

Early the next day he met what seemed to be the same machine again, but with a different crew this time: a tall, fair-complexioned man and two women with light brown skin, long silky black hair and large dark slanted eyes. All three were clad alike in one-piece brown garments resembling suede, with zippers. They said they were scientists, spoke enthusiastically of the natural riches of Brazil, and were astonished that, unlike the other folk whom they had seen, Hellwig did not flee from them in fear.

Hellwig stated, in his account to the newspaper, that these people could all easily pass here as Earth natives.

Gordon Creighton indicates that the source is Diario de Noticias, Rio de Janeiro, August 25, 1965.

[Ref. lo1:] CORAL AND JIM LORENZEN:

The authors indicate that another report claiming some sort of mental communication is the one told by Rubem Hellwig, claimed to have occurred near Santa Maria, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

He claimed that an object which looked like a melon or rugby football and about the size of a Volkswagen car landed at about 5 p.m. one day in March, 1954.

He was driving, stopped his car and walked to the craft. There were two average-sized men with brownish faces and fair hair. One gathered specimens of grass while the other stayed in the machine.

They spoke to Hellwig in a language he could not understand and yet he somehow knew what they wanted, and that was where they could get some ammonia. He said he directed them to a nearby town, whereupon the craft glowed, gave off blue and yellow flames, and "vanished silently and instantly."

He further claimed that he met "the same" ship the next day, but with a different crew: a tall man with a fair complexion and two women with light-brown skin, long black hair, and large, dark, slanted eyes. They were clad in brown suede-like garments, and talked about the natural riches of Brazil, explaining that they were scientists.

They also commented on the fact that Hellwig did not run from them as others had in the past.

[Ref. jv1:] JACQUES VALLEE:

In his catalogue of UFO landings, Jacques Vallée indicates that on March 1954, at 05:00 p.m., in Santa Maria, Brazil, Rubem Hellwig was driving when he saw a football-shaped machine, the size of a Volkswagen, on the ground.

He walked toward it and met two men of slim build, normal height, their faces brownish, wearing no helmets. One was inside the object while the other collected grass samples.

They spoke to Hellwig in a strange language, and yet he said he understood they were asking for ammonia. He directed them to a nearby town.

The craft vanished silently and instantly with blue and yellow flames.

In a next entry of his catalogue, Vallée indicates that early the next day, Rubem Hellwig again saw a strange machine.

He observed a tall, fair-complexioned man and two women, who had light brown skin, long black hair, dark, slanted eyes. All three wore one-piece garments of a fabric resembling suede, with zippers.

They told Hellwig that they were scientists, spoke of the natural riches of Brazil, and expressed surprise that he did not run away.

Vallée indicates that his source for both entries is "1; Humanoids 33."

[Ref. bh1:] ROBERT E. BARTHOLOMEW AND GEORGE S. HOWARD:

The authors indicate that in March 1954, near Santa Maria, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, Rubem Hellwig claims to have contacted aliens twice. The first encounter in March 1954 occurred as he was driving down a road and saw a melon-shaped craft about the size of a Volkswagen car resting near the road.

The crew consisted of two men, about five feet tall, with slim builds and brown faces. He stopped the car, and approached. One man was inside the object and the other was collecting specimens of grass. Hellwig claimed he somehow understood what they asked him, which was where could they get some ammonia.

After he directed them to a nearby town, the craft emitted bright blue and yellow flames as it vanished silently and instantly.

Early the next day, he claimed to have contacted a similar machine but with a different crew, a trio that said they were scientists, who spoke enthusiastically of Brazil's natural resources, and were surprised that unlike other people they encountered, Hellwig didn't flee in fear.

The authors indicate that the source is Gordon Creighton, "The Humanoids in Latin America," in Charles Bowen, editor, The Humanoids, Great Britain, Futura, 1977, pp. 91-92, citing Diario de Noticias of Rio de Janeiro for August 25, 1965.

[Ref. jb1:] JEROME BEAU:

Jérôme Beau indicates that in March 1949, at 5 p.m. in Santa Maria, Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil, driving his car, Rubem Hellwig saw a machine in the shape of a soccer ball, the size of a Volkswagen, on the ground. He went towards it and observed two men, tall, of dark complexion, with no helmets.

One of them remained inside the apparatus while the other gathered samples of plants. They spoke to Hellwing in a strange language but he understood that these men asked for ammonia. He indicated a close city to them. The apparatus disappeared instantaneously and without noise, emitting blue and yellow flames.

Early the following day, also in Santa Maria, Rubem Hellwig again saw a strange apparatus. He was able to observe a man, tall, of pale complexion, and two women of brown complexion, with long black hair, black and slanted eyes. All three carried one-piece combinations, brown, cut in a matter resembling suede, with zip fasteners.

They told him that they were scientists, spoke to him about the natural richnesses of Brazil and were surprised that he did not flee.

Jérôme Beau indicates that the source is "P. 1, Humanoids 33".

[Ref. ar1:] ALBERT ROSALES:

Albert Rosales indicates in his catalogue that in Santa Maria Brazil, on March 1954, at 05:00 p.m., Rubem Hellwig, a rice planter, was driving home when he noticed a strange object some 50 meters away. It was about the size of a Volkswagen and was shaped like a rugby football.

A man of slim build and brownish complexion, about 5'2" tall, was seated in it, and another outside was picking capon grass and handling it in to him.

A circle of bluish yellow luminosity appeared around it, "making it appear round," and from each side of the cabin protruded 4 3" tubes; a yellowish flame shot out through these tubes, and the vessel vanished instantly.

The next day, at an unknown time soon after starting, Hellwig encountered the same or a similar machine, sitting on the highway.

Albert Rosales indicates that the source is FSR, Vol. 12 #6.

[Ref. ar2:] ALBERT ROSALES:

Albert Rosales indicates in his catalogue that in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, on August 27, 1965 at an unknown time, Gabriel Rubens Hellurg reported encountering a landed disc-shaped object on a rice field. He reportedly communicated via telepathy with several human-like occupants that informed him that they hailed from another solar system. Hellurg asserted that he was able to communicate telepathically and understood what he was being told. No other information.

Albert Rosales indicates as source Fabio Picasso.

[Ref. lg1:] LUIS R. GONZALES MANSO:

Luis R. Gonzalez Manso notes in his FirstHumCat catalogue that it was reported in 1965 that in March 1954 in Santa Maria, Brazil, at 05:00 p.m., Rubem Hellwig was driving when he saw a football-shaped machine, the size of a Volkswagen, on the ground.

He walked toward it and met two men of slim build, normal height, with brownish faces, no helmets. One was inside the object while the other collected grass samples.

Luis Gonzales indicates that his sources are Coral and Jim Lorenzen, in Flying Saucers Occupants (1967), pp. 109-10; Peter Rogerson, "Notes Towards a Revisionist History of Abductions (Part Two)", in MAGONIA #47, October 1993, page 6; Gordon Creighton, "The Ruben Hellwig Contact Claim", in FSR 12:6 for November/December 1966; Diario de Noticias for August 25, 1965 and the MAGONIA Catalogue [Jacques Vallée] cases 126 and 127.

Points to consider:

After the publication by Gordon Creighton of this story typical of the lore of the alleged "contactees", it was republished in edulcorated summaries in both the convinced and skeptical ufology literature with no more research.

Basically, the case is nothing more than a newspaper article with a less than credible story supposed to have happened 11 years earlier.
