A ufologist interested by cases of encounters with mysterious entities reportedly received an email towards 2005, form one Bill Carson, telling a story his father had told him.
The latter, when he was 17-year-old, one evening of June 1906, in Burt County, Nebraska, the USA, went by horse-drawn carriage to a dance party in Bertha. Little the sun set, he reportedly saw two young men walking before his carriage, at a distance of half a mile.
When he had approached within some 6 meters of them, he saw that each one of these young men had his jacket hung at the shoulder. He did not see their faces.
He intended to invite them to go up in his carriage, but the horse became nervous when he called the two young men. The horse was now almost impossible to control, it stopped, started to move back, and Carlson spent less than one minute to take control. When he succeeded, both young people were not there any more.
Carlson was puzzled because there was nothing to hide them. Harvests of the end of spring had been done, the landscape was flat, clear as far as the eye can see, the ditches on each side of the road were not deep enough to be used as hiding-place, and daylight was still sufficient to see.
Carlson knew all the young people of the neighborhoods, therefore as soon as he arrived at the ballroom, he tried to find them, although he had not seen their faces, but he noted that none of the dancers had a jacket like those the disappeared young men had carried on the shoulder. He checked a second time, in vain, at the end of the dance party.
Thus, he started to wonder whether these two people might have been something else than ordinary, and ended up thinking that they could have been two ghosts.
A French ufologist estimated in one of his books that if the story is true, it must have been a "close encounter of the 4th kind", since the two missing young men must have been abducted by invisible aliens who do not need UFO to abduct people.

[Ref. js1:] JEAN SIDER:
The author indicates that in June 1906, in the evening, in Burt County, Nebraska, USA, one Carlson, Swedish immigrant, 17-year-old, rode by horse-drawn carriage in direction of Bertha to go to a public party. The night had not fallen yet and little before sunset, the witness saw two young men walking before his carriage, at a distance of one half-mile, without obstacle to hide them for the harvests of the end of spring were done and all the landscape is "is flat on the level of the ground" according to the original expression, if one excludes the ditches on each side of the road.
Each one of them had his jacket suspended on a shoulder. As Carlson approached these two men with the intention to invite them to go up in its vehicle, his horse expressed nervousness. When the carriage was no more than a half-dozen yards (5,50 m), and his horse became reluctant, he called the two walkers, offering to take them along. But at this time the horse became practically impossible to control, it stopped and started to move back. The witness spent less than one minute to take control of the animal, and when that was done both young people had disappeared.
Jean Sider indicates that the ground was clear as far as the eye can see, and that there was no place where the two individuals could have hidden, not even in the not very deep ditches, without mentioning that daylight was still strong.
Carlson knew all the young people of the neighborhoods, therefore as soon as he arrived at the dance hall, he looked in the assistance if he could recognize both "disappeared" persons, although he did not see their face. No dancer carries a jacket as those they had. When the ball is finished, he looks again in vain.
Thus, he started to wonder whether these two characters could be something else that ordinary men, to end up thinking that he must have seen two ghosts.
Jean Sider indicates that the source is Albert Rosales, according to a communication by Bill Carlson, witness son, wtc@mchsi.com.
Jean Sider comments on that "in the possibility of an authentic testimony, we rather think of a temporary or final body abduction of two ordinary young men who went to the ball. In which case, it would be demonstrated, once more, that the Aliens have no need for a flying machine to capture human beings any time and anywhere, and that they want that this is known, otherwise nobody would not see anything." He ensures that the reaction of the horse is a proof of authenticity because animals "are often disturbed by the side effects produced by the interferences of the phenomenon, whether visible or invisible."
The story is just someone's email to a ufologist.
Contrarily to Jean Sider's belief, an "animal reaction" mentioned in a story is no proof of authenticity. "Animal reactions" are an occasional but widespread feature of such stories and anyone who would want to make up a story could mention an "animal reaction".
To the witness's sons, obviously, the strangeness rests in the two characters and their disappearance. The father apparently thought they were ghosts, that their jacket was weird, that they were not from the area. I is quite funny that Jean Sider doesn't view the two young people as a strangeness, and needs to add speculation of invisible aliens with no UFO to the mix. This is what is needed to turn some sort of ghost story into an "Alien abduction".
Of course, even if this late-reported fourth-hand story has any truth in it, there is no shred of evidence that the story has anything to do with UFOs or UFO occupants or "Aliens".
