The Belgium flap:

On November 29, 1989, in the Eupen region:

Between 06:30 p.m. and 06:45 p.m. between Polleur and Jalhay, Mr. M.:

SOBEPS gives this information:

On November 29, 1989, between 6:30 p.m. and 06:45 p.m., Mr. M. went from Polleur to Jalhay and saw in the sky three powerful lights directed downward.

The phenomenon was heading to Jehanster or Baelen.

He could not stop because of the road traffic, but he very well discerned a triangular object darker than the sky, and thin, at an estimated distance of 500 meters.

The lights were placed on the corners of the triangle and between them, there was a small red flashing light.

The object flew slowly with the tip forward and slightly raised.

In their second book, SOBEPS mentions again this sighting report:

SOBEPS says that on November 19, 1989 at 08:30 - 06:45 p.m. in Jalhay, a sighting with one witness was of an isosceles triangle moving at the vertical of the witness with its point ahead, and at a speed much slower than that of a helicopter, and the winess also addded that the position of the object was tilted and the point sighlty lifted upwards.

The distance is given as 500 meters.

There is a summary for this observation, published on the web by the Belgian ufologist Godelieve Van Overmeire in her catalog circa 1999, now gone, but much copied by UFO websites and forums. This summary is as follows:

1989, November 29

BELGIUM, between Polleur and Jalhay

At some time between 06 and 06:30 p.m. the witness sees in the sky three powerful lights directed downward. This phenomenon heads to Jehanster or Baelen. The witness can not stop because of the traffic, but he clearly discerns a triangular object of small thickness, darker than the sky. The headlights are set on the corners and between the headlights there is a small red light. The triangle slowly flew tip forward but slightly raised. (VOB 1 - SOBEPS 1991, p. 30)

Source example:

Luminosity of the sky during this sighting:

06:20 p.m.
06:30 p.m.
06:40 p.m.
06:50 p.m.
07:00 p.m.

Localization:

Above:: localization of Polleur (red dot), Jalhay (blue dot), Baelen (green dot), Jehanster (grey dot).

According to the map by SOBEPS (source cited), the witness was approximately at the purple dot.

It can be noted that from this position, the information that the object was going towards Baelen or Jehanster corresponds to two quite different directions - almost 90° of difference. The turns on the road probably explain this.

Notes:

We still have someone there surprised by an object, again described as triangular, with three white lights pointing down and a red light in the center.

Taken alone, of course, the observation is poorly documented and leaves room for interpretations as that of the helicopter. In conjunction with closer observation, it becomes more questionable.

Note that the “slower than a helicopter” appreciation has little value, as a helicopter can be stationary. Simply, it is understandable that for the witness, a helicopter flying there would do this to go from one place to another and would therefore have no reason to fly with this slowness that puzzled him.
