ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Bischoffsheim, on January 16 and 17, 2012:

Case number:

ALSACAT-2012-01-16-BISCHOFFSHEIM-1

Summary:

On July 24, 2012, the administrator of the web forum of the Alsatian ufology group SPICA published a report by one "freemansbox" explaining he had observed a phenomenon that he found rather strange and disturbing in the night from January 16 to 17, 2012, and also on the night of January 17, 2012.

On the night from the 16th to the 17th, after seeing a star that shone weirdly, he had observed it through a telescope, and it then looked like 3 to 5 stars glued to one another. But after magnification, he saw it was a ring of light with many colors, red, yellow, blue-green and white, the center part being unlit.

He saw that another of these stars was also in a ring, but not closed, in "C" shape.

He said that when measuring the speed of movement of the sun, he found it to be equivalent to two fingers at arm's length for a 15 minutes move, but for these "stars" he estimated their movement was more in the order of 6 fingers for a 15 minutes move.

He stated that these observations were made in Bischoffsheim in the Bas-Rhin and looking westward, the movement of the "stars" going to the north.

He asked if anyone else had seen the same thing or could explain what he saw because it seemed extraordinary to him. He thinks scientists must have observed this too, but he heard nothing about it on TV or radio news.

Bischoffsheim (67) weird observation January 16 to 17, 2012

Good evening, I observed a rather strange and disturbing phenomenon in the night of 16 to 17 January 2012 and this evening (17) these things are still in the sky, or rather above the sky. last night after seeing a star that shone in a weird manner, I watched through a telescope at first sight i-t looks like 3to5 stars glued to each other, but after magnification I saw a luminous ring with several colors (red, yellow, blue-green and white, the part in the center is unlit. another of these stars was also in a ring but interrupted, rather like a C. When I measure the remaining sun time i count 2 fingers for 15min compared to the horizon, but for these "stars" I would say that their movement is more about 6 fingers for 15min. these observations were made in Bischoffsheim in the bas rhin ( zipcode. 67870 ) looking towards the West. their movement was north. did someone also see it? or explain what I saw? because this seems ou of the ordinary sure there were scientists who noticed it but [I] heard nothing on the news or radio.

good morning to you. i observed this phenomenon Saturday at 8:40 p.m. I posted it and as if on purpose my story just disappeared from the web. But i had the time to alert my parents who live 60 km from my home and do not believe at all in the supernatural they realized clearly that this was neither a star nor a satellite. But the trouble in France" is that if you see something you're a fanatic or crackpot, and if you film it you're a fan of fake videos. There are only the authorities who are (supposedly intelligent).but I reassure you that flashing blue lights and red at times have indeed been seen, as well as the sending of light beams at times. and it lasted for about 40 minutes and after nothing yet clear skies and starry night.

Discussion:

Map.

The strange aspect of the star with the naked eye can be explained by diffraction of its light through an ice crystals cloud layer.

The ring and multiple color appearance occur easily with a telescope with misadjuested lenses.

Evaluation:

Probable star diffracted on ice crystal layer and misadjusted telescope lenses.
