ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case in Alsace or Freiburg, on December 5, 2011:

Case number:

ALSACAT-2011-12-05-ALSACE-1

Summary:

On the web forum of the popular science website "Futura-Science", Thierry reported that on December 5, 2011, between 05:15 p.m. and 06:00 p.m. "in Alsace on the side of Freibourg", he has seen in the sky a trail of light, "like a rocket and very yellow" almost horizontal and seemingly going east to west, followed by the formation of a fireball and explosion of it a bit like a small fireworks.

This phenomenon had lasted about 5-6 seconds. At the time of the explosion there was "nothing at all, no glowing object that falls."

He was in his vehicle and thus heard no sound.

Thierry, puzzled by this phenomenon, had registered on the forum to try to collect other testimonies and hoping to understand what he had seen.

Testimony and question

Monday, December 5, 2011 in Alsace on the side of freiburg between 5:15 p.m. and 6 p.m., I ssee in the sky a luminous trail (like a rocket and very yellow) almost horizontal and I would say from east to west, folowed by the formation of a ball of fire and explosion of it a bit like a small fireworks. Surprising phenomenon that pushes me today to register here in an attempt to gather more testimonies, hoping to understand what I saw. This phenomenon lasted about 5-6 seconds and at the time of the explosion nothing at all, no glowing object falling. I also would note that being in my car, i did not hear any sound. If anyone has other information on this matter, I would like to know more.

Thank you everybody

Thierry

Later on the same forum, Thierry explains: "I speak of Freiburg in Alsace when it is in Germany (lol)!"

On the web forum, several readers suggest it would have been a meteor, one of them saw it from the Centre region in France.

Discussion:

This was of course one of several observations of the meteor that day at about 6 p.m. There were other reportsfrom Alsace and elsewhere about it.

I am not sure that the observer was in Alsace. "Freiburg Alsace" can be understood as "I was in Alsace and at the level of Freiburg in Germany" or "I was in Alsace and the phenomenon was in the direction of Freiburg in Germany," or maybe it was indeed seen from Freiburg in Germany, more precisely Freiburg im Breisgau, Fribourg-en-Brisgau in French. This town is east of Colmar, a little further to the south than Colmar Haut-Rhin, 15 kilometers from the border.

Evaluation:

Meteor.
