In a listing of UFO sighting reports in the Haut-Rhin on their website, the Alsatian ufology association SPICA noted that on Monday, July 21, 1997, at 11:00 p.m. in Wingersheim, something triangular with several colors had been seen; which remaining unidentified for lack of information
This actually goes back to an investigation report by Christian Morgenthaler and Dominique Schall, published in the ufology magazine Phenomena, of the ufology group SOS OVNI, #37 of July 1997.
The report indicates that on February 8, 1997, the witness of the sighting, Mrs. L., contacted SOS OVNI after telling her sighting to one of her friends who knew about this association through their sky observation sessions.
The investigators met Mrs. L. on February 13, 1997.
The sighting took place on January 21, 1997, between the villages of Wingersheim and Schwindratzheim, an area 19 km north-north-west of Strasbourg and 14 km south-west of Haguenau, overflown by planes starting their turn to take the center line of the Entzheim landing strip.
Mrs. L. returned home via the D32 road a little before 11:00 p.m., an hour estimated from the time of arrival at home and the duration of the journey.
Over a distance of about 5 km, she was able to observe, on three occasions, a luminous phenomenon, or rather, three phenomena described differently from each other, which the witness combined into one and the same thing.
Halfway between Wingersheim and Waltenheim-sur-Zorn, Mrs. L. saw on her left, just on the horizon, two very bright stars seeming to move. After a few moments, they moved closer to each other to become one.
Then, at the entrance to the village of Waltenheim-sur-Zorn, she saw these two lights again, but this time with a more yellowish hue. On each side there was a smaller, red light. The phenomenon seemed closer than the first.
After it was hidden from view by houses, she saw it again at the exit of Waltenheim-sur-Zorn, on a stretch of tree-lined road. This time it was much closer, to her right. She could make out two white, oval lights, and below, five to seven round blue lights (Pantone 297U) that flashed independently of each other. The red lights had gone out.
A few hundred meters further on, in a clear passage, the phenomenon seemed even closer to her and she noticed that the white lights were not oval as she had initially thought, but rectangular, with rounded corners. In addition, they did not appear to rest on a surface, but on a recess. The blue lights were no longer blinking.
She did not distinguish the outlines of the phenomenon, but the visible parts made her think of a triangle. These visible parts were composed by "kinds of chevrons", successive light and dark areas. The phenomenon, very bright, however, did not illuminate the landscape, and no noise was perceived.
The thing seemed to be stationary or flying at very low speed. At that moment she had these thoughts: if she was "fired at", if she was "irradiated", or what if she were "abducted by aliens".
Suddenly, a motorcyclist without headlight appears in front of her, she avoided him and resumed her trip, and no longer saw the phenomenon.
Just before entering Schwindratzheim, Mrs. L. stopped on the bridge over the canal. Without getting out of her car, she looked in the direction of her observation but no more light was visible.

Regarding the first sighting, investigators found that there was a valley with a tarmac path on its ridge. According to the mayor and people from the village, this site is a place for Sunday walks, but also a place where young people meet, outside the village. Access by car is possible. The thing is difficult to prove, but it is very likely that the witness observed a car making a U-turn or pulling into a path.
Regarding the phenomenon at the entrance to Waltenheim-sur-Zorn, investigators believe it possible that Mrs. L. observed a plane in landing approach. Shortly before 11:00 p.m., there had indeed be two landings, at 09:51 p.m. and at 11:53 p.m. (UTC).
For the third observation, no explanation could be found yet. On this portion of the journey made by the witness, the witness was to the north of a hill having the Marne-Rhine canal below. No plane passes that side of the hill, which was confirmed to them by several residents. Investigators found nothing in the environment that could cause this phenomenon. The blinking blue lights could have come from observing the phenomenon through tree branches although the witness thought it was not.
Investigators tried to find the motorcyclist, but he did not go to a gendarmerie station or a town hall in the area to report any sighting. Likewise, no one reported seeing anything unusual in the early months of that year.

L'information suivante nous a été communiquée le 8 février 1997 par le témoin, Mme L., après que celle-ci ait raconté son observation à l'une de ses amies connaissant notre association par l'intermédiaire de nos soirées d'observation du ciel. Nous avons rencontré Mme L. le 13 février.
Les faits se sont déroulés le 21 janvier 1997 vers 23h00, heure locale, entre les villages de Wingersheim et de Schwindratzheim. Ce secteur, situé à 19 km au nord, nord-ouest de Strasbourg et à 14 km au sud-ouest de Haguenau, est survolé par les avions amorçant leur virage pour prendre l'axe de la piste d'Entzheim.
Mme L. regagnait son domicile par la D32. 11 n'était pas tout à fait 23h00 (horaire estimé d'après l'heure d'arrivée au domicile et la durée du trajet). Sur une distance de 5 km environ, elle a pu observer, à trois reprises, un phénomène lumineux. Bien qu'il s'agisse en fait de trois phénomènes décrits différemment les uns des autres, le témoin les a associés en une seule et même chose.
A mi-chemin entre Wingersheim et Waltenheim-sur-Zorn, Mme L. a donc observé, sur sa gauche, juste sur l'horizon, deux étoiles très brillantes semblant se déplacer. Après quelques instants, elles se rapprochaient l'une de l'autre pour ne faire plus qu'une. Puis, à l'entrée du village de Waltenheim-sur-Zorn, elle put revoir ces deux lumières, mais présentant cette fois une teinte plus jaunâtre. De chaque côté on apercevait une lumière plus petite, rouge. Le phénomène semblait plus proche que le premier. Après qu'il ait été caché à sa vue par des maisons, elle l'aperçu de nouveau à la sortie du village, sur une portion de route bordée d'arbres. Cette fois, il était beaucoup plus près, sur sa droite. Elle pouvait distinguer deux lumières blanches, ovales. Au-dessous, cinq à sept lumières rondes de couleur bleue (Pantone 297U) clignotaient sans synchronisme spécifique. Les lumières rouges s'étaient éteintes. Quelques centaines de mètres plus loin, dans un passage dégagé, le phénomène lui sembla encore plus proche et elle constata que les lumières blanches n'étaient pas ovales comme elle l'avait d'abord cru, mais rectangulaires, avec des coins arrondis. De plus, elles ne semblaient pas reposer sur une surface, mais sur un renfoncement. Les lumières bleues, elles, ne clignotaient plus. Mme L. n'a pas distingué les contours du phénomène, mais les parties visibles lui firent penser à un triangle. Celles-ci étaient composées par « des genres de chevrons », zones claires et sombres se succédant. Le phénomène, très lumineux, n'éclairait cependant pas le paysage, et aucun bruit ne fut perçu. Il semblait stationnaire ou volant à très faible vitesse. Plusieurs pensées sont venues à l'esprit de Mme L.à ce moment: si on lui "tirait dessus", si elle se faisait "irradier" ou que se passerait-il si elle se faisait "enlever par des extraterrestres". Puis, subitement, surgit devant elle un motocycliste sans lumière. Après avoir évité ce dernier, et repris sa route, elle ne vit plus le phénomène. Juste avant l'entrée de Schwindratzheim, Mme L. s'est arrêtée sur le pont enjambant le canal. Sans sortir de sa voiture, elle a regardé dans la direction de son observation mais plus aucune lumière n'était visible.

En ce qui concerne la première observation, nous avons constaté qu'il y avait un vallon avec un chemin goudronné sur sa crête. D'après le maire et des personnes du village, ce site est un lieu de promenade dominicale, mais aussi un lieu où des jeunes se rencontrent, hors du village. L'accès en voiture y est possible. La chose est difficilement contrôlable, mais il est fort probable que le témoin ait observé une voiture faisant un demi-tour ou se rangeant dans un chemin.
En ce qui concerne le phénomène à l'entrée de Waltenheim-sur-Zorn, il est possible que Mme L. ait observé un avion en phase d'atterrissage.
En effet, peu avant 23h00, deux atterrissages ont eu lieu, à 21h51 et à 21h53 (TU).
Quant à la troisième observation, aucune explication n'a pu être trouvée pour le moment. Sur cette portion du trajet effectué par le témoin, l'observateur se trouve au nord d'une colline ayant en contrebas le canal de la Marne au Rhin. Aucun avion ne passe de ce côté-là de la colline, ce qui nous a été confirmé par plusieurs habitants. Nous n'avons rien trouvé dans l'environnement pouvant provoquer ce phénomène. Le clignotement des lumières bleues pourrait provenir de l'observation du phénomène au travers des branches d'arbres bien que le témoin pense que ce n'est pas le cas.
Nous avons recherché le motocycliste, mais ce dernier ne s'est présenté ni dans une gendarmerie, ni dans une mairie du secteur pour signaler son éventuelle observation. De même, personne n'a déclaré avoir observé quelque chose d'insolite dans les premiers mois de cette année. Pour le moment, nous ne possédons donc que le témoignage de Mme L.
