ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Mulhouse, on November 30, 1995:

Case number:

ALSACAT-1995-11-30-MULHOUSE-1

Summary:

A UFO sightings catalog using information from the old "UFOCAT" in the US says that on November 30, 1995, at 07:00 a.m. in Mulhouse, Alsace, France, "a ball was observed" at night.

Second, the Spanish ufologist Juan-Vicente Ballester-Olmos listed the case in his catalog of UFO photographs, UFOCAT.

I finally found the primary source, the ufology magazine Phenomena, #32, of March 1996, in which the ufology group "SOS UFO" reported that on November 30, 1995, at 07:00 a.m., someone located in the suburbs of Mulhouse, leaving home, saw "an ovoid phenomenon of quite large size."

An attempt was made to locate a camera to take a picture, but there was no time.

But thirty seconds later, towards the northwest, the witness had seen "a luminous dot which grows rapidly", which then moved towards the East "leaving like a line in the sky, perfectly straight and the thickness of the phenomenon itself."

The whole thing then came to a standstill, grew for about ten seconds giving the impression of getting closer, then started again where it had come from. The luminous dot gradually "erased" the line, then resorbed and disappeared completely.

SOS UVNI Est then indicates that two photos had been taken, but as they showed nothing, the witness threw away the negatives. Their investigationss carried out with the military authorities, including Air force Base 132 in Colmar - Meyenheim, did not yield anything, the first military aircraft to take off being scheduled for 10:30 (UT). SOS OVNI therefore did not find an explanation.

SOS OVNI - End of December 1995.

A person located in the suburbs of Mulhouse observed, on November 30, at 07:00 (Local Time), while leaving home, an ovoid phenomenon of quite large size. The person rushes home to take a camera, to take a picture from his/her balcony, but once outside, he/she finds that there is nothing left. About thirty seconds later, however, towards the north-west, he/she saw a bright spot which was growing rapidly.

After a few moments, the dot moves east, leaving a line in the sky, perfectly straight and the thickness of the phenomenon itself.

The whole (dot + line) then comes to a standstill, grows for ten seconds, giving the witness the impression that it is getting closer before leaving where it came from. The light dot gradually "erases" the line, then reabsorbs and disappear completely.

The investigation carried out by SOS OVNI Est revealed that two photos had been taken. As they showed nothing, the witness threw away the negatives.

In addition, the investigation carried out with the military authorities (in particular those of the BA 132 Colmar Meyenheim) did not yield anything. The first military aircraft to take off is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. (UT). No explanation could therefore be found by SOS OVNI Est, which is looking for other witnesses.

1995, November 30

FRANCE, suburb of Mulhouse (Haut Rhin)

At 7 a.m., a person noticed a fairly large ovoid phenomenon on leaving her home. She rushes home to take a camera from her balcony, but once outside, she finds that there is nothing left. About thirty seconds later towards the NW she sees a luminous dot which grows rapidly. It moves towards the east, leaving like a line in the sky, rectilinear, of the same thickness as the phenomenon itself. The whole, line + dot, will then come to a standstill, grow for about ten seconds before returning to where it came from. The light dot will gradually erase the line, subside and disappear. Two photos are taken which show nothing. (Phenomena n. 32, p. 23)

Discussion:

Map.

The report is very thin and even shoddy.

The first phenomenon seems much more interesting than the second, but we are told nothing more than: "an ovoid phenomenon of quite large size." This might have been almost anything, from the balloon to the meteor to the plane and whatnot.

The second phenomenon does not seem to be related to the first, or else, it is not clearly specified.

No direction, no angular velocity, no angular size, no duration are given...

We are told that the witness did not have time to take a photo, then that he (or she) took two which did not yeld anything. Again, this is not clear. I suppose that the witness did not have time to photograph the first phenomenon, which was no longer there when he or she came out of his / her house with the camera, and that the photo attempt was made on the second phenomenon.

For the second phenomenon, SOS OVNI says they found no explanation because there was no military plane planned at the time; but nothing is said about civilian planes.

The description of this second phenomenon could be that of a passage of a spraying aircraft for example. As we are not told anything about the place ("the suburb of Mulhouse"), this will remain unverifiable, but possible. (For example, towards the south of Brunstatt, in those years there was often spraying of insecticides by aircraft and helicopters along the Ill river and its marshes.)

Evaluation:

Totally insufficient information.
