ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Discussion:

Map.

I checked the visibility of the moon on November 6, 1994 at 00:10 a.m.in this area. It was not visible, rising only at 10:39 in the morning.

When the hour is close to midnight, there is sometimes a classical date error: November 6 at 00:10 a.m. could be November 7; but the moon was also not visible then.

One may then think of another astronomical body; it had to be big enough, to remain visible for 4 hours, and pretty low on the horizon to cause the usual illusion of "following" a car.

(This scenario may be silly if in fact the witnesses were not in the car but watched the object follow a car, but I do not have the data yet to know...)

I find planet Mars; which rose at precisely 11:24 p.m., and is at azimuth 71° and the low elevation of 6° above the horizon at 00:10 a.m., setting down at 02:15 p.m..

It is not exactly as big as it could be from the ground (195,010,000 kilometers away from the earth) but quite bright (magnitude 0.2) as 89.12% of its visible surface is illuminated by the sun.

Scan.

I am in no position to "prove" that all these people mistook Mars to a UFO for now, as I miss the primary source. But I have to consider this possibility.

Evaluation:

Possible Mars.
