ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Hattmatt, in August 1990:

Case number:

ALSACAT-1990-08-00-HATTMATT-1

Summary:

On July 9, 2008, a report appeared on the web about an observation in August 1990 at 1 a.m. one night from a Saturday to a Sunday, by a person who was 10 years old then, in Hattmatt.

It was during the Feast of the village, with nearly 300 people in a small square between the church and the town hall. The evening was organized by the Sapper Firemen and there was a fanfare, there was pizzas and flamed pies on the menu. There were orchestras, small tents, garlands of light bulbs of different colors - blue, yellow, red, green, orange, etc. - on both sides of the square. The communal lighting lighted the place, and the party was in full swing.

The parents, both firemen, were at the service, seeking orders at the tables, the witness being a little lonely at this hour, despite the presence of guests. He remembers having had a stomach ache after eating too much.

He was in his corner watching the stars when suddenly, the entire city became dark. The lanterns extinguished in series, the sound of the orchestra PA stopped, the fridges went off, the streetlamps were also cut off suddenly. The whole village was totally immersed in the dark.

A hundred people therefore reacted immediately by a "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOh" of surprise and discontent.

The witness laboriously stood up, watched the scene although everything was dark. He looked up to the sky, "as if by reflex, huh". The ky was clear, no cloud, and all the constellations were visible.

Then he saw an object, "not really describable," with a few twinkling lights from above. The object was tiny and seemingly triangular, the witness thinking it must have been several kilometers in altitude.

The object was "slightly" stationary, then left in a "hyper-acceleration."

The observation lasted about 15 seconds, and once the object was out of visual range, all the lights came back on. The music resumed where it had stopped, and a "AAAAAAAAAAAh" of relief was heard.

He remembers having told about this to his parents, but for them, it was a simple power failure. He asks himself if this was an "unidentified object", a helicopter or a plane, and wondered if there was a connection between the object and the power failure at the same time.

August 1990 (I was 10) at around 1:00 am, night of Saturday to Sunday, a small town in Alsace (Hattmatt) in eastern France.

Village Feast with close to 300 people in a small square between the church and the town hall. Evening organized by the Sapper Firemen and their band, the menu, Pizza / Flamed Pi, orchestras, tents, colorful luminous garlands roamed from both sides the square of different colors (blue, yellow, red, green, orange, etc ...), the municipal lighting made the location bright, and the party was swinging.

My parents (both firefighters) were on duty seeking orders at the tables, I, finding myself a little lonely at this hour, despite the presence of the guests, I was in my own corner watching the stars (I remember I had a stomach ache after eating too much ^^)

Suddenly, the entire city was plunged into darkness, the lamps went out in series, the orchestra PA no longer sounded, the fridges were cut off, the street lights are also cut off suddenly and the whole village was plunged into darkness, a total blackout.

Obviously, when the party is at its best, one hears a hundred people immediately react with:

An "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOh" of surprise, mixed with discontent.

I painfully stand up and watch the scene (although everything is dark). I look to the sky (as if by reflex), and the sky is clear, no cloud, and all our constellations are visible.

And there, as if it were normal, I see an object, not really describable, with a few twinkling lights pass over (the object is tiny and apparently, triangular, I think it was several kilometers high).

It hovered a short while, then goes away in a hyper-acceleration.

This scene lasts about 15 seconds, and once the object is out of visual range, all the lights come back, the music resumed from where it had stopped.... and a "AAAAAAAAAAAh" of relief is heard.

Of course, I recall having told about it to my parents, but to them it was a simple power failure.

Is this really a power failure?

Is it an unidentified object?

A helicopter or a plane?

Is there a link between the object and the power failure at the same time?

Personally, I would never now [sic], but I remain convinced that we are not alone, on the other hand, it would be really selfish to imagine the opposite.

So, fiction or reality?

I made a copy / paste from a forum where we talk about it without any controversy and in a very serious manner

Discussion:

Map.

There are four Saturdays in August, 1990, the date is thus one of these:

4 to 5 August 1990
11 to 12 August 1990
18 to 19 August 1990
25 to 26 August 1990

For the rest, I cannot give the identity of the object as described, and I just share the wondering of the witness: unidentified flying object, airplane, helicopter? Likewise, the power failure could have been a coincidence, or not.

Evaluation:

Unidentified, low strangeness.
