ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Mulhouse, on March 20, 1977:

Case number:

ALSACAT-1977-03-20-MULHOUSE-1

Summary:

In the 1970s, Mrs. Gueudelot, archivist for the ufology magazine Lumières Dans La Nuit, compiled case files. One of the cases came from Mr. Pernot, a correspondent ufologist for the magazine, and concerned a sighting on March 20, 1977, at 6:00 p.m. in Mulhouse.

The witness, Mrs. Schmitt, residing at 5 rue des Vergers in Buschswiller, had observed from the Tour de l'Europe in Mulhouse, to the east in the direction of Riedisheim, two moving dark gray dots.

At one time, these two dots remained stationary, then two white lights appeared from these two dots, resembling sparks.

When these two lights went out, the two craft that were in the direction of Riedisheim turned around toward the west in the direction of the Thann valley.

The case file noted that in Habsheim, not far from Mulhouse, there was a base of the Army Light Aviation (ALAT) equipped with helicopters that very often operated in the skies over Mulhouse.

MARCH 20, 1977.-

MULHOUSE. - (68)

Hour: 6 p.m.

Mrs. SCHMITT, resident, 5 rue des Vergers in BUSCHWILLER, observes from the Europe Tower in Mulhouse (Ht Rhin), in the direction of RIEDISHEIM (East of Mulhouse) two gray-black dots moving.

At one time, these two dots remained stationary and then two white lights appeared from these two dots, similar to sparks.

When these two lights went out, the two (craft) which were in the direction of RIEDISHEIM turned around towards the WEST towards the THANN valley. It should be noted that in HABSHEIM, not far from Mulhouse, there is a light land aviation base (ALAT) with helicopters and very often operating in the Mulhouse skies.

SENT BY MR. PERNOT.

Discussion:

Map.

It is worth noting the absence of any strangeness mentioned in the report. Mr. Pernot's remarks about the helicopters are entirely well-founded.

I just want to add a few details about the location.

The Tour de l'Europe (below), in the center of Mulhouse, is a "skyscraper" inaugurated in 1973. The top floor, 100 meters high, was a restaurant, and it is quite possible that the witness was there. The rest of the building consists of private residences, with a few medical and dental offices and some offices as well.

Carte.

The view toward Riedisheim, Habsheim to the east, and in the opposite direction toward Thann is perfect.

Carte.

The witness is not from Mulhouse and may not have been familiar with the air traffic that can be seen there.

Evaluation:

Probable helicopters.
