ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Pfaffenheim, in the 1960's:

Case number:

ALSACAT-1960-00-00-PFAFFENHEIM-1

Summary:

In 2018, on the ufology Web board Les Mystères des OVNI, someone reported an old story of weird traces in the vineyards of Alsace:

A vinegroywer of Pfaffenheim who died since, said to be of good faith and quite Cartesian, had told that one August morning, having gone as often to the heights to admire a parcel of his vines remained speechless by seeing a perfectly round trace with a diameter of about 8 to 10 meters on its vines.

Inside the circle, all of the leaves had prematurely yellowed and the grapes had "half-dried".

The man had thought for several years that the cause was a meteorological event, until another winegrower told him about the same phenomenon.

Suspicious traces in the vineyards of Alsace
Tue 18 Feb 2014, 02:59 p.m.

Hello everyone !!!

I wanted to convey the testimony of a Haut-Rhin winegrower who unfortunately died today!

This man of good faith and quite Cartesian, confessed to me that in the 60s he was witness a fact which upset him for many years.

One August morning, as he often does, he went to the heights to admire a plot of his vines.

And there, he stared at what he saw: a perfectly round track with a diameter of about 8 to 10 meters on his vines!

Inside the circle, all the leaves had yellowed prematurely and the grapes had dried by half !!!

Of course, he immediately thought of a meteorological event for several years, until another winegrower told him about the same phenomenon !!!!!!!!

Note: following a question from a member of the "Les Mystères des OVNIS" board, the person reporting this specified that the town where it had happened was Pfaffenheim.

Discussion:

Map.

This is one the kinds of facts that were later reinterpreted in a "ufological" perspective because of the phenomenon of "crop circles" that began in 1978 when two English pranksters had decided to trace circles in the fields by flattening the crop, in order to make it look like "flying saucers" had landed.

They were gradually imitated by others, then the traces created became more and more complex figures instead of the initial circles, because the thing had become a new form of "land art", with teams competing with each other.

It is quite possible that the winegrower was right at the start, that it was due to a weather event such as a mini tornado.

Regardless, there is little reason to believe that this story has anything to do with the issue of unidentified flying objects.

Evaluation:

Probably not UFO-related.
