The newspaper Le Courrier de Saône-et-Loire for November 8, 1954, reported that three fishermen aboard the boat "L'Explorateur," from Moëlan-sur-Mer in the Finistère, had discovered a strange object floating on the water offshore, the previous evening.
It was a duralumin circle 1.50 meters in diameter, with two crossbars inside, to which two fully functional flashlights were attached. Five large balloons - three red, one yellow, and one white - were tied to the circle with metal wires.
The newspaper stated that the fake saucer had fallen into the sea after one of the balloons burst, and that the fishermen had brought the device to the port of Brigneau.
The gendarmerie tried to determine who had built this saucer, "which had been seen flying over the region."
