Summary:

In 1979, the two French ufologists Michel Figuet and Jean-Louis Ruchon published in their book on the CE3 cases information they said to be coming from the newspaper Sud-Ouest for October 12, 1954.

On October 6, 1954, at approximately 11:30 p.m., in Cozes, between Bordeaux and Royan in the Charente-Maritime, a lady who remained anonymous returning home by bicycle saw in a field at the edge of the road a light that was first of orange color, then green.

She was then able to see that these gleams came from a turtle-shaped craft surmounted by a dome. The light was then extinguished, and she could see two human forms coming out of the craft.

One of the silhouettes held a rod and seemed to be looking for something. A sudden and powerful light begun to illuminate the machine and the witness was then able to distinguish that the two human forms were two small beings that she thought had only one eye and no nose on their flat faces; which has two holes above the mouth.

The lady was very frightened, uttered a cry of fear, the craft then left. She then heard that the craft made a low buzzing sound.

The same year, very skeptical ufologists Gérard Barthel and Jacques Brucker briefly mention the case to make fun of it, indicating that in "Coze in the Charente Maritime in 1954, a reader of the newspaper 'Sud-Ouest' said to have met two Little beings who had only one eye and left our planet in a turtle-shaped craft."

The existence of the article is still confirmed by the newspaper Sud-Ouest which mentioned it again in 2009; but the original text, which seems to be simply an anonymous mail sent to the newspaper, thus constituting an unverified case, is not yet available to me.

An unidentified woman, riding a bicycle from Bordeaux to Royan, saw in a field at Cozes an object shaped like aturtle, surmounted by a cupola. It emitted first an orange light, then green, dimming and brightening alternately. Two human forms appeared nearby, one of which, carried a shaft or rod and seemed to be looking for something. A violet light from the object illuminated the beings and the woman was able to make out two small human like faces behind the face-plates in their helmets. But instead of noses, she could see only two small holes just above the mouth; and instead of the two usual eyes, she saw a single eye in the middle of the forehead. Letting out a scream, the object (and the two beings, presumably) disappeared emitting a slight hum.

The authors indicate that in Coze in the Charente Maritime in 1954, a female reader of the "Sud-Ouest" newspaper said to have met two small beings which had only one eye and left our planet in a machine in the shape of a tortoise.

[Ref. fru1:] MICHEL FIGUET AND JEAN-LOUIS RUCHON:

The two French ufologists report that on October 6, 1954 at about 11:30 P.M., in Cozes, which is located between the cities of Bordeaux and Royan in Charente-Maritime, an unnamed lady who was going home riding her bicycle, saw a gleam which was first of orange color, then of green color, in a field.

She then saw that these gleams came from an apparatus in the shape of a turtle and topped with a cupola. The light then went out, and she saw two human silhouettes coming out of the apparatus.

One of the silhouettes held a rod and seemed to be looking for something. Suddenly an intense light lightened the apparatus and the witness could see that the two human silhouettes were in fact two small beings which she said has only one eye and no nose, a flat face, with two holes above the mouth.

The lady became very scared and yelled of terror, the apparatus then went away. When the object went away, she heard that it made a weak humming sound.

The source is indicated as Sud-Ouest for October 12, 1954.

Jean Sider indicates that on October 6, 1954 at 11:30 p.m., in Cozes in Charente-Maritime, an anonymous lady was riding her bicycle on the D730, between Royan and Bordeaux, when her attention was suddenly drawn to a strange glow in a field adjacent the road. First of orange color, it turned green, and appeared to come from a turtle-shaped craft with a dome. Suddenly a bright light allowed her to distinguish two small cyclops with a flat face with two holes instead of a nose. One of them was holding a rod and seems to get at something. The frightened woman screamed, then the craft disappeared emitting a low humming sound.

Jean Sider says his source is "Figuet, p.128-129."

He wonders what it is to be understood by the disappearance, if it was "erased magically" or took off at very high speed. He adds that Figuet claims this was the only case with cyclops ufonauts, but that is not true since there are at least two other cases, including on the day before, when Pierre Lucas watched a dwarf with a single eye on the forehead.

[Note: There is actually no evidence that Pierre Lucas had claimed his creature did not have two eyes.]

This is indeed a very untypical UFO related alien or occupant, one that curiously has been reported in more modern times.

COZES (CHARENTE-MARITIME : FRANCE)

A woman cycling home saw an illumination by the side of the road. At first it was orange and then turned to green. This illumination came from something shaped rather like a turtle, surmounted by a dome. The light then went out and she could see two humanoid figures come out of the thing. One held a stick like apparatus and seemed to be looking for something. The object was then lit up again by as much more powerful light and she could now see that the figures were dwarfs with only one eye, only holes for a nose. The witness screamed at which the thing took off with a low buzzing sound.

Explanations:

Map.

Cozes is only very approximately "between Saintes and Royan", two cities that I know well. Cozes is 14 kilometers east-south-east of Royan and 21 kilometers south-west of Saintes:

This is all only a simple anonymous letter to a newspaper, so the credibility is rather poorly established.

It will be noted that nothing says that the machine has flown. Was it a craft rolling on the ground? Was it its normal engine noise that was heard by the woman at the time she fled?

If one wants to think of a mistake, I would think of a military armored vehicle, with two occupants wearing glasses or maybe a gas masks, for some exercise: "no nose, flat face, two holes above their mouth". The "rod" that one of them held would be his weapon.

An M8 Greyhound armored vehicle used at that time by the French Army: "a craft in the form of a turtle and surmounted by a dome," the lady wrote.

Thus, a possible invention, or a possible mistake caused by an armored vehicle and its crew.
