Summary:

In 1979, the two "skeptical" ufologists Gérard Barthel and Jacques Brucker reported in their book "La Grande Peur Martienne" ("The Great Martian Scare") that on October 6, 1954, at about 7:15 p.m. in Chantenay, Loire-Atlantique department, Léon Poirier had first observed a big star, but with binoculars, he realized that the object had a brioche shape.

Reports:

[Ref. bbr1:] GERARD BARTHEL AND JACQUES BRUCKER:

The two authors indicate that on October 6, 1954, at approximately 07:15 p.m. in Chantenay in the Loire-Atlantique, Léon Poirier observed initially a large star, but with binoculars he realized that the object had the shape of a muffin.

Explanations:

Map.

Barthel and Brucker, as often, gave no source and were unable to be clear. I guess I have to be in their place:

A star, or a planet, observed with binoculars, can get a look or colors that vary greatly, for example because of the chromatic aberration of the binoculars. Barthel and Brucker may have wanted to give an example of this, that is, an astronomical misinterpretation caused by an observation of a star with binoculars.
