In his ufological bulletin Info-OVNI #0 of April 1975, ufologist Jean Giraud indicated that the newspaper La Montagne of Aurillac for October 8, 1954, reported among other sightings an observation of a resident of Jaleyrac in the Cantal, but that after investigation, it appeared that the observation had taken place in Lavaur, in the Tarn.
In 2004, ufology Dider Gomez, who is from the Tarn department, discusses the case on his website and in his magazine Ufomania #41. He says the sighting is dated October 4, 1954, that it was an ovoid shape without wings, and that it is said to have occurred in Lavaur.
He quotes La Montagne of Aurillac for Friday, October 8, 1954:
"A resident of Jaleyrac (Cantal) reported an observation in Lavaur. After investigation, it appeared that this brave man had made an observation in Lavaur, in the Tarn. The facts falsely located by the press of the time in capital of the canton of the observation or the locality of residence of the witness 'constitute a non-negligible quantity.'"
He indicates that he gor hold of the newspaper article, and that the title was: "A flying saucer reportedly flew over our region, Tuesday around 4 p.m.".
The article mentioned several hundred testimonies from residents of Mauriac who claimed to have observed an ovoid shape without wings or fuselage which shone in the sun like if its outer surface was nickel-plated.
He indicates that the case he is interested in involved by chance new elements, he quotes:
"ANOTHER APPEARANCE AT LAVAUR"
"But my curiosity having been aroused, I received Wednesday morning, on the occasion of a large gathering of people attending a funeral, a highly impartial testimony from a farmer in the Jaleyrac region. So that it was near the pond of Lavaur, Monday at the beginning of the afternoon, a craft substantially similar to that which so intrigued the population of Mauriac, flew over the region at high altitude, at very great speed. Neither noise, nor smoke; saucer-shaped, or rather my interlocutor specified to me, a kind of shining parachute. All this does not add much to what we already knew about flying saucers. But our air space is now being violated by flying saucers."
He indicates that his checks relvealed that there is a village called Lavaur, near Meymac, 7.5 km west of Ussel, in the Corrèze department, 36 kms in straight line from Jaleyrac. This farmer could therefore very well have made his observation from a lake near Lavaur, either from the Lac de Sèchemailles or from the pond of Merlançon, both close to a few kilometers from the locality of Lavaur. He nevertheless found no trace of a Lavaur pond either in Corrèze or in Cantal, and it seems to him more and more certain that it is indeed a Corrèze case and not a case Tarn case as wrongly suggested by Jean Giraud in the first issue of INFO-OVNI.
He specifies that the information reported in the press spoke of a farmer from the Jaleyrac region, which reinforces his idea that this pond is very close to Mauriac and Jaleyrac. He puts this finding in relation to the testimonies in Mauriac mentioned in the same press article, which implies that the observation was limited to this same region and not to Lavaur in the Tarn, nearly 230 km away from Mauriac in straight line.
Finally, he notes that these few additional items do not make it possible to decide on the nature of the observation described.
[Ref. io1:] "INFO-OVNI":
"La Montagne" d'Aurillac du B/10/1954 rapportait aussi une observation d'un habitant de Jaleyrac (Cantal), mais après enquête, il apparaissait que ce brave homme avait fait son observation à Lavaur, dans le Tarn.
[Ref. dgz1:] DIDIER GOMEZ:
Didier Gomez discusses an observation on October 4, 1954, an ovoid wingless shape, said to have occurred to Lavaur.
He quotes:
"A resident of Jaleyrac (Cantal) reported an observation in Lavaur. After investigation, it appeared that this good man had made an observation in Lavaur, in the Tarn. The facts wrongfully located by the press of the time at the canton's main town or the locality of residence of the witness 'constitute a considerable quantity'."
He says that this information published in "La Montagne" of Aurillac for Friday, October 8, 1954, was initially wrongly put in the Cantal, according to INFO-OVNI, #0, of April 1975, in an article by Jean Giraud, according to a communication from Claude Maugé.
He indicates that according to these thin known data thanks to the help of Claude Maugé, he tried to find the article, that he found by a simple mail addressed to the Departmental Files of the Cantal in February 2003.
The headline was:
"A flying saucer is said to have flown over our area, Tuesday around 16 o'clock".
Several hundreds of testimonies of residents of Mauriac are mentioned, they claimed to have observed an ovoid form without wings, nor fuselage which was shining in the sun as if its external surface were of nickel.
He indicates that case which interests him comprises by chance, new elements, and quotes:
"OTHER APPEARANCE IN LAVAUR"
"But my curiosity having been waked up, I collected Wednesday morning, at the time of a large gathering of people attending funerals, a highly impartial testimony emanating from a farmer of the area of Jaleyrac. Whereas he was near the pond of Lavaur, Monday at the beginning of the afternoon, a machine appreciably similar to that which intrigued the population of Mauriac so much, flew over the area at high altitude, very high speed. Neither noise, nor smoke; saucer shape, or rather, my interlocutor specified to me, of a kind of brilliant parachute. All that does not add many things to what is already known about the flying saucers. But our vital space air is now violated by the flying saucers".
He indicates that his checking made it possible to find that there is a village of the name of Lavaur, near Meymac, at 7,5 Kms in the west of Ussel, in the department of Corrèze, within 36 km in straight line from Jaleyrac. This farmer could thus very well have made his observation from a lake close to Lavaur either the Sèchemailles lake or the pond of Merlançon both at a few kilometers of the locality of Lavaur. He nevertheless found no trace of a pond of Lavaur neither in Corrèze, nor in the Cantal, and it appears increasingly certain to him that it is indeed a case of the Corrèze and not of the Tarn as wrongly suggested by Jean Giraud in the first issue of INFO-OVNI.
He specifies that the information reported in the press is about a farmer of the area of Jaleyrac, which reinforces him in the idea that this pond is very close to Mauriac and Jaleyrac. He puts this observation in relation to testimonies at Mauriac mentioned in the same Press article, which implies that the observation was limited to this same area and not in Lavaur in the Tarn, distant of almost 230 kms from Mauriac in straight line.
He notes that these few additional precise details do not make it possible to decide on the nature of the described observation.
Insufficient information, possible meteor or plane.
Jaleyrac is in the department of Cantal, canton of Mauriac, bordering the department of Corrèze.
There is in Jaleyrac an "Inn of the Pond of Lavaur". Lavaur - or Lavaurs circa 1700 - was a hamlet depending of Jaleyrac in the Cantal, between the hamlets of Boissière and Charme. The pond of Lavaur is indeed in the Cantal, just in the south-west of the hamlet of Lavaur, in the east of which is the plain of Lavaur.
