In the 1970-1980's, the ufology group GREPO published in their bulletin Vaucluse Ufologie that there had been, on "September 31, 1954", at an unknown hour, in Avignon, an observation of an "unusual object" by several witnesses.

The source was said to be the Avignon newspaper Le Dauphiné Libéré.

COMMENTS

These two cases are known to us from the researches we carried out among the archives of Dauphine Libéré (Ref 6), in Avignon. They are too imprecise and too old for us to undertake a serious investigation. But they do mention unidentified flying object that cannot be related in any way to our technology, airplanes or balloons. And, remember that, the first artificial satellite Sputnik I, was launched only on October 5, 1957.

"Référence 6" refers to "Le Dauphiné Libéré".

Explanations:

Map.

The month of September does not have 31 days. I dated the sighting September 30, 1954, but it is not a sure date.

It is likely that GREPO found in the newspaper of October 1, 1954, this observation dated "yesterday" and that they were mistaken in thinking that the day before the 1stst of October was the 31st of September...

As for the observation, I can only say that the information is totally insufficient.
