The "skeptical" ufologists Gérard Barthel and Jacques Brucker reported in their 1979 book that in Cavillargués (sic) in the Gard, on September 29, 1954, the passage of a luminous cigar observed by a garage owner and reported in the Midi Libre newspaper for October 2, 1954, was actually a hoax.
[Ref. bbr2:] GERARD BARTHEL AND JACQUES BRUCKER:
Yet another thing: do not imagine that hoaxes are the preserve of important cases with occupants, structured objects on the ground. It exists for the period that we studied a quantity of information, succinct cases in flight which, when they are not due to the pure and simple passage of a meteorite, are the deeds of pranksters. For example in Cavillargués [sic] (Gard) on September 29 (12), where the passage of a luminous cigar was observed by a mechanic.
12. - Midi Libre of the Gard for October 2.
