In 2019, I found a Website by one Jacques Schweitzer, resident of the Aube department, who wrote articles about events in this department.
One of his articles was about the UFO sightings in the Aube, and one of the cases was that of October 16, 1954, at about 12 o'clock, in Romilly-sur-Seine: a restaurant-keeper saw "a luminous craft moving in the sky at a brisk pace. The weather station at the Air Base of Romilly thinks it is a luminous balloon."
[Ref. jcr1:] JACQUES SCHWEITZER:
On October 16, 1954, at about 12 o'clock, in Romilly-sur-Seine, a restaurant-keeper saw a luminous craft moving in the sky at a brisk pace. The weather station at the Air Base of Romilly thinks it is a luminous balloon.
[jcr1] did not indicate a source for this report which seems to be missing in the ufology literature; I guess it came from some local Press source.
Of course this was probably a balloon, not "luminous" but lighted by the Sun; in any case, there is nothing in the report that comes against such an explanation.
The mention of its speed, and the hour and place, make me think that it was not the stratospheric balloon launched in Italy and seen in France that day, but a more "usual" weather balloon.
