The ufology group "Association des Amis de Marc Thirouin" (AAMT) published in their "Drôme - Ardèche Catalog" in their newsletter U.F.O. Informations, in the 4th quarter of 1981, a summary of an observation of February 13 or 14, 1954, in Charmes-sur-Rhône, in the Ardèche department:
At 7:30 a.m. or, rather, at sunrise, with clear weather with some clouds and no wind, Mr. Giraud, a farmer in St-Donat sur Herbasse, was going to pick truffles, when he was surprised to see in the direction of Bren, a very intense light that illuminated the entire landscape in green.
Suddenly a luminous ball of the size of the full moon appeared, and descended into the valley of the Rhone River. Three saucer-shaped objects came off the ball and left in the same direction, giving off the same green and phosphorescent luminosity, but less intense, than that of the big ball. These three objects were the size of big stars.
The witness had estimated the distance of these "UFOs" at about ten kilometers, as well as their altitude. Their speed had seemed very fast to him, maybe 10,000 km / h.
The observation duration was 7 or 8 seconds.
The AAMT indicated that this came from their investigation February 3, 1977.

All this suggests to me a meteor with detaching fragments - we are indeed told that these "saucers" continue in the same direction as the "big ball", and that they had the same color.
