Roswell 1947 - newspapers in 1947

San Franciso News, July 8, 1947:

BULLETIN:

ROSWELL, N.M., JULY 8 - Possession of a "flying disk" was disclosed today by the Intelligence Office of the 509th Bomb Group of Roswell Army Air Base.

Officers at the base say the "disk" was flown in a Super-Fortress to "higher headquarters" undisclosed.

The intelligence office reported that it gained possession of the "disk" through the co-operation of a Roswell rancher and George Wilson, Sheriff at Roswell.

The disk landed on a ranch near Roswell sometime last week. Not having phone facilities, the rancher, whose name has not yet been obtained, stored the disk until such time as he was able to reach the Roswell sheriff's office.

The air base refused to give details of construction of the disk or its appearance.

Patrick Gross:

This is one of the hundreds of short newspaper articles that followed the announcement that the US Army Air Force Base of Roswell had "recovered a flying disk" near Roswell, New Mexico. US Army quickly made a second announcement indicating it was a weather balloon. The whole matter was then forgotten for decades.
