LISBON - Policeman Richard Koffel saw a glowing disc-like object at cloud height over Lisbon early today. He could not get confirmation from Sheriff's Deputy Dave Brothers 10 miles away near Salem.
Koffel said the meteor he saw on the midnight turn several weeks ago didn't compare with what he saw at 5:20 a.m. today as he stood in the Eagles Home parking lot.
He said the light was about 90 degrees up the eastern sky and had no distinct outline aside from being round, except that with a little peak at the top. He said it appeared to glow like those radium things in a watch.
He said he notified the sheriff's office by radio, asking if they saw the light. Deputy Brothers, 10 miles away, said he saw nothing.
Koffel said the light had changed shape to a long shaft—an elongated teardrop. This remained until sunrise, dimming as the sky brightened.
"Look east and tell me what you see," was Koffel's request of Brothers. The deputy radioed back: "Stars and clouds."
Koffel said there were no clouds here and the sky was full of stars. "The atmosphere was so clear you could see for miles."
The light was much bigger than a full moon and didn't seem to be far away, he said. It did not move although the last visible portion, after it changed shape, was lower in the sky.
The county jail radioman heard no other reports of the light from this area, but did overhear someone from a county near Columbus talking about two coon hunters who were so alarmed at a light they had seen they were never going back in the woods after dark.
