NOVEMBER 22, 1978, CHURCH STOWE, NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, U-K., ELSIE OAKENSEN:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

Ufology sources indicate that on November 22, 1978, at 05:30 p.m. or 05;15 p.m., Elsie Oakensen, teachers resources manager, drove home after work, from the A45 to the A5 towards Towcester. The travel had been without incident so far. When she approached the village of Church Stowe, Northamptonshire, she saw two very brilliant lights, a red one and a green one.

She said that there had been much traffic, but that all was as in slow motion. The object she was looking at was dumb-bell shaped, "made of very soft plastic", gray, without any openings or windows, and approximately 30 meters above the road.

She did not want to stop on high traffic road where nobody else seemed to have seen the object, she drove on under the object, continuing towards Church Stowe, or her home in Weedon according to other sources.

According to some of the sources, when she came out of the main road she stopped her car for better looking at the object. According to other sources, when she left the main road she took the lane which ended at her Weedon home, and the car stalled - there could have been two stops.

She told: "A green light started to flash. I decided to restart the engine but when I turned into the village something strange happened – the car, which had just been serviced that day, completely cut out."

This is said to have occurred when she reached a line of trees at the entry of a farm.

"Eventually it restarted but I had only travelled about 100 yards when it stopped again. The natural light disappeared and everything was in absolute blackness."

"Then suddenly a white circle shining of light approximately a meter in diameter shone on the road immediately after, as if somebody had pressed on a switch, the normal light returned and I drove my car normally."

She realized that 15 minutes had passed: which she was unable to explain.

After a single unsuccessful attempt to recover memory of the missing time by the use of "hypnotic regression", carried out by Martin Keatman, one of the coordinators of the BUFORA ufology federation, she was encouraged to try "creative visualization" on the spot of her UFO sighting by British ufologist Jenny Randles.

Consequently, she was able to "remember" to be led to a place where she was "scanned" by a brilliant light by shaded and gray forms, one long and thin and the other more rectangular, which appeared and disappeared several times in a fog. Both shone through this fog, in silver gray, smooth and round. She also remembered to feel heat and that her arm was shaking.

Apparently, she was not completely "satisfactory", she had the feeling that she had been "rejected" by the entities, who brought her back to her car.

Ufologist Jenny Randles reported that there had been an independent sighting less than two hours after the Oakensen encounter, approximately four miles away: four women, younger than Mrs. Oakensen but who did not know anything of her story, and reciprocally, drove through the village of Preston Capes, and saw colored lights similar to those which had alerted Elsie Oakensen, and then they saw parallel beams shot from a cloud. Their car began to lose power and the object paced them, until they entered the village lit by streetlamps and the car returned to normal. The UFO lights now merged into one and vanished.

Because no clear link between the two encounters had been established then, there was no continuation with these other witnesses to check whether they had also experienced "missing time".

Elsie Oakensen had been so much puzzled by her experience that she wrote two books, in 1995 and 1998, about what she thinks was a close encounter of the third kind with extraterrestrial forms of life - she expressed this opinion publicly.

She continued to live in Church Stowe, writing articles for spelling journals. In spite of a fall which had "affected her memory", she is still convinced that she met aliens. Retired, she told in a 2008 newspaper: "I looked at my books and I can't remember what I had written, but it must be true."

interested in the "occult" - she actually joined the Northamptonshire UFO Research Centre (NUFORC) as treasurer - and that she found out she developed "psychic capacities", leading her to become a "spiritual healer." Ufologists say they tested these psychic capacities and she was able to guess the color of pieces of paper that were hidden from her sight.

ELSIE OAKENSEN, retired teacher: I firmly believe in life on other planets. I saw a UFO in November 1978, when I drove underneath it. It was dumb-bell shaped, grey, smooth, with a red light at one end and a green light at the other. Under hypnosis I've also seen grey shapes with a silvery glow round the edges. That's why I'm so convinced life in the cosmos needn't look like a human being.

On 22nd November 1978 a Nortamptonshire lady was on her journey home from work at 17:15 when she saw a dumbbell shaped object over the A5 road near Weedon. She passed under the object then turned off the main road into a lane which lead to her house. As she drove up the lane the engine of her car stalled and she observed strange lights dancing around the car. When the lights disappeared the car engine re-started and she was able to continue her journey. Fortunately the witness sat down and wrote a detailed description of what she had seen whilst the details were still fresh in her mind. The witness, Mrs Oakensen has written a book "One Step Beyond" describing her UFO experiences and the events that followed. A similar object was reported approximately two hours later by four ladies who saw it near Preston Capes, about four miles from Weedon.

[Ref. ab1:] ALAN BAKER:

Alan Baker indicates that on November 22, 1978, Elsie Oakensen was driving home from work, and was on a road approaching the village of Church Stowe, Northamptonshire, when she saw a dumb-bell-shaped UFO hovering about a hundred feet above the road. There were two lights, one red and one green, on the smooth, grey surface of the object.

She did not want to stop on the busy road where no one else seemed to have seen the UFO, she drove under the UFO and continued towards Church Stowe.

Suddenly, her car lost power, she was enveloped in a pulsating light, and recovered a little further down the road.

She realized 15 minutes had passed which she could not account for.

After a single unsuccessful attempt to recover her missing time through the use of hypnotic regression, she was encouraged to try creative visualization at the scene of her UFO sighting by British ufologist Jenny Randles.

As a result, she was able to recall being led to a place where she was "scanned" with a bright light by shadowy, grey shapes. Apparently, she was not quite satisfactory, she had the feeling that she had been "rejected" by the entities, who returned her to her car.

Randles states that there was an independent sighting less than two hours after Oakensen's encounter about four miles away: four women, younger than Mrs Oakensen but who did not know of her or her story, and vice versa, were driving through the village of Preston Capes, and saw similar colored lights to those which first alerted Elsie Oakensen and then parallel beams shot from a cloud. Their car began to lose power and the object paced them, until they entered the village lit by streetlamps and the car returned to normal. The UFO lights now merged into one and vanished.

Since no clear link between the two encounters had been established at the time, there was no follow up on the other witnesses to establish whether they, too, experienced missing time.

[Ref. js1:] JOHN SCHUESSLER:

John Schuessler indicates that on 1978/11/22, in England, in Church Stowe, Northamptonshire, at 1730, Elsie Oakensen drove straight under an hourglass shaped object hovering about 150 feet above the road. As she drove on the car's engine failed and lights went out. Suddenly, piercing brilliant circles of white light swept around the car. She had about 15 minutes of missing time.

John Schuessler lists the effects as a possible abduction and a time loss.

He indicates the sources as "Abduction".

[Ref. ar1:] ALBERT ROSALES:

Albert Rosales indicates in his catalogue that in Church Stowe, England, on November 22, 1978, at 1730, Elsie Oakensen was driving on the A5 motorway two miles from her home when she became aware of a strange object hovering about 100 feet above the road surface. The object was described as being dumbbell shaped gray and plastic looking with a bright red light on the left sphere and a green light on the right sphere. The witness drove directly under the floating object and as she drove away she noticed that the object was still floating over the roadway. Her car suddenly seemed to slow down and as she reached a line of trees by the entrance of a farm the engine completely stalled. The witness suddenly found herself sitting in complete darkness and silence. As the witness sat in her vehicle a brilliant circle of pure white light illuminated the road by the passenger side of the car. It went out and seconds later further circles of light began appearing in different places around the vehicle, seemingly dancing around her car as if searching for something. Suddenly the witness found herself down the road with the engine running. She eventually reached her home and realized that the routine drive had taken longer than usual. Later under hypnosis the witness recalled sitting in her vehicle very frightened with a white light shining on her face. The radiating circles of light seemed to shrink in size. Suddenly out of the haze two shapes appeared. One is long and thin, the other more rectangular, they both then disappear then appear together again. Both shine through the haze, appearing to be silvery gray in color smooth and rounded. She also recalled feeling hot and her arms shaking. No other details were clearly recalled.

Albert Rosales indicates that the source is "Carl Nagaitis and Philip Mantle 'Without Consent'."

Elsie's UFO encounter on the A45 in south Northants

04 February 2008

Elsie Oakensen

One of the most famous UFO experiences in Northamptonshire is the 1978 tale of Elsie Oakensen who believed her car was stopped on her way home to Church Stowe by a flying machine.

"As usual I turned off the A45 on to the A5 towards Towcester," she said. "The journey had been uneventful, but then directly ahead of me I saw two very bright lights, one red and one green.

"There was a lot of traffic but it seemed as if everything had gone into slow-motion. I could see a dumb-bell shaped object, made of very smooth plastic material, and there were no openings or windows."

Elsie continued her journey but when she came off the main road she stopped her car to take a closer look.

"A green light started to flash. I decided to restart the engine but when I turned into the village something strange happened – the car, which had just been serviced that day, completely cut out.

"Eventually it restarted but I had only travelled about 100 yards when it stopped again. The natural light disappeared and everything was in absolute blackness.

"Then suddenly a brilliant white circle of light about a yard in diameter shone on the road. The very next moment, as if someone had flicked a switch, natural light returned and I was driving my car normally."

The whole journey took 15 minutes longer than normal although Elsie cannot account for the extra time.

Elsie was so mesmerised by her experience that she went on to write several books about her close encounter of the third kind.

Today Elsie still lives in Church Stowe and, despite a recent fall in Daventry affecting her memory, she is still convinced she had an extraterrestrial encounter.

She said: "I looked at my books and I can't remember what I had written, but it must be true."

[Ref. os1:] "ONLY SECRECY" WEBSITE:

While driving along the A5 towards Towcester, heading towards the village of Church Stowe, on 22 November 1978, Elsie Oakensen encountered a UFO, the craft was stationary, it was a grey dumbbell shaped craft and had two bright lights on the underside of each end, one light was red the other green. The green light began flashing, her car came to a halt without her applying the brake, it suddenly became dark even though it had been light a moment before. A bright light shone down on her from above, then the darkness disappeared and it was light again. Elsie checked the time when she arrived home and noticed that her fifteen minute journey home from work had taken thirty minutes. It was later found that another person, Georgina Lourie along with her three friends were driving around the same time as Elsie and they too saw a light at the same time. Georgina’s car also stopped and the four occupants of the car saw the object fly away at a phenomenal speed. In 1979, Elsie Oakensen was regressed by Martin Keatman one of BUFORA’s coordinators, during her session she described a bright light coming towards her and two ghost like entities looking at her. The UFO encounter transformed Elsie’s life, she became involved in occult matters, finding she had nascent psychic skills leading to her becoming a spiritual healer.

Points to consider:

The part of the experience with the entities comes from the use of hypnosis, method that serious ufologists do not regard as valid.
