NOVEMBER 14, 1978, SAN DONATO DI TAGLIACOZZO, AQUILA, ITALY, GIUSEPPE DI GIOVANNI:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

Apparently, some Italian newspapers, including Il Messaggero for November 15, 1978, reported that on November 14, 1978 at approximately 5 a.m. in the mountain in Colle del Castello, close to San Donato di Tagliacozzo in the pronvince of Aquila, Italy, Mr. Giuseppe di Giovanni, aged 51, a married "and serious" stockkeeper, was keeping his herd, and was searching for a cow that missed since the previous night.

He suddenly saw, posed in a field, an object of circular or cylindrical or round form - depending on the version - of a diameter of about 5 meters and high of about 1.50 meters; which resembled a maroon cigar box and had small lit windows, round or square, depending on the versions.

He approached and peered inside and saw six or seven "people" of human appearance, very small, wearing green outfits and "smiling like children".

Two of them were "women", like dolls, with blonde hair, the others were "men" with dark hair and seemed older than the "women".

The witness became frightened and hid behind a bush, he rubbed his eyes but the object was still there.

He closed his eyes again one moment and when he opened them he did not see the object any more.

More recent ufological sources say he saw only two occupants, one "girl" and one "man", who appeared identical whatever window he was peering in, as if they were the same image projected on each window.

One version indicates that the occupants wore conic hats, another version indicates that the occupants were 0.80 meters tall, some versions say that only the "girl" smiled whereas the "man" was motionless like a statue and without expression. One version indicates that the witness saw the object fly away.

[Ref. mv2:] MAURIZIO VERGA:

The ufologist indicates that on November 14, 1978, at about 5:00 a.m. in Colle del Castello near San Donato di Tagliacozzo in the province of l'Aguila, there was a CE3 that was sketchily reported in newspaper sources such as Il Messagero for November 15, 1978.

He says that from the details he had collected so far, Mr. Giuseppi di Giovanni, aged 51, married man, of serious nature was tending the cattle, searching for a cow which had strayed, when he suddenly saw, lying in a field, a circular object of an estimated diameter of 5 meters and a height of 1.50 meters. He said it looked like "a brown shoe-polish box" with some small windows.

He approached it and looked inside, where he saw 6 or 7 "people" of human aspect, very small wearing green overalls, and smiling like children. Two of the entities were "women", like dolls. The women were blondes, the "men" were dark-haired and gave the appearance of being much older than the "women".

Giovanni was suddenly overtaken by fear and hid behind a bush. He rubbed his eyes but the object was still there, then he closed his eyes for a minute or so and when he reopened them the object was gone.

The source is indicated as "some Italian newspapers", including Il Messaggero for November 15, 1978.

[Ref. rh1:] RICHARD HALL:

At a mountain site in San Donati di Tagliacozzo, October 25, about 5:00 a.m., a farmer was searching for a cow missing since the night before, when he came across a strange object on the ground. It was a brownish lenticular disc about 3 meters in diameter and 1.5 meters tall with round windows around the circumference. Inside he could see 4-5 green-dressed beings wearing conical caps and two smiling, pink-skinned women. Frightened and confused, he hid behind bushes, but when he looked again the apparition was still there. He closed his eyes for several minutes, and when he looked again the object was gone. Some rocks had been removed from the site and the grass had turned yellow.

Richard Hall indicates that the cases in his article were compiled from data supplied by Edoardo Russo of Centra Ufologica Nazionale, Milan; Massimo Greco, Brescia; and Maurizio Verga, Cermenate.

[Ref. mt1:] MORENO TAMBELLINI:

The author indicates that in S. Donato Ti Tagliacozzo, (Aq), the Abruzzi, Italy, on November 14, 1978, at 05:30, stockbreeder Giuseppe di Giovanni, was searching for a calf that went astray the previous evening. Di Giovanni, awaken early, went along a path when he saw in front of him among the bushes a large cylindrical and round object long of approximately five meters posed on the ground. It had lit square windows all around. In disbelief, Di Giovanni approached the machine, turned around and looked inside though a window.

He thus saw two beings not higher than 80 centimetres. One of them seemed female and resembled a blonde and gracious "girlie". She looked and smiled at him. The other, of male appearance, with dark hair, was motionless like a statue, without any expression.

The witness still turned around the object, looked into each window but each time he saw the same scene: the "man" and the "girlie".

It was as if he looked at TV screens synchronized on the same image. Upset more than ever, the witness walked away a little while turning his shoulders away from it, then he again looked at it, but the UFO had disappeared in absolute silence.

[Ref. ar1:] ALBERT ROSALES:

Albert Rosales indicates in his catalogue that in Donato Di Tagliacozzo, Italy, on November 14, 1978, at 05:30 a.m., laborer Giuseppe Di Giovanni was out in the morning working in the fields when he noticed behind some bushes a large cylinder shaped object apparently sitting on the ground. It had several lighted square windows. Surprised he approached the object and looked inside one of the windows. Inside he saw two human like figures, one resembling a woman, no more than 80 cm in height. The woman resembled a beautiful fine feature doll. She looked at him and smiled. The other figure was a man with dark brown hair that stood still and expressionless like a statue. The witness then looked inside the other windows and saw the same scene; the doll like woman and the brown haired man. To the witness it felt like watching a television screen. The witness walked away then heard an explosion behind him, looking back he saw the object rise up and leave the area in absolute silence.

Albert Rosales indicates that the source is "Archivio S.U.F."

The website adds: "An object was observed. Occupants of the craft were seen. One beige disc, about 10 feet across, was observed by one male 51-year-old witness in a pasture for over 15 minutes."

[Ref. pn1:] SITE WEB "PRIMA DA NOI":

The website reports that during the "hot" peroid of the 1978 flap in the Abruzzi, a first case was recorded on November 14 in S.Donato de Tagliacozzo (AQ): stockbreeder Giuseppe di Giovanni noticed in the early morning among the bushes, first a cylindrical object of five meters, in which he observed two small "holografic" beings behind a kind of window.

[Ref. al1:] "ALESSANDRO":

I checked into my ITACAT file, [...]

[...] cases of very significant CE3 [...] It's worth the pain to point out [...] Another important case that we can find on the other hand is in Tagliacozzo (Aquila) on November 14, 1978, who saw as protagonist of another close encounter farmer Giuseppe de Giovanni. [...]

Points to consider:

See the List of Issues. There is no particular reason to believe the far-fetched story of "miniature" humans. The "eyes-rubbing" suggests a somehow naive witness, the story comes from an undetermined newspaper and was apparently not investigated.
