On January 27, 1978 according to the majority of the sources, or perhaps January 24, 1978, or perhaps just January 1978 according to others, early in the morning or in the evening according to other sources, four young men four young men aged 17 - 19 were reportedly poaching pheasants in the "Devil's Garden", a sector of meadows close to the Weaver river, near Frodsham, Cheshire, U-K.
They reportedly saw an object described as a 4.50 meters sphere or a balloon, or spherical, silver colored, emitting a strong purplish gleam that made it difficult to look at it, or trailing flames in its wake. In a newspaper much later the object is described as large, in the shape of a dome, and posed in a field, ufology sources indicating that it flew towards them along the river above the water, and above the meadows, and that the teenagers initially thought it was "a malfunctioning satellite".
The youngsters allegedly hid and then saw what they called two "astronauts" in silver outfit with miner's lamps on their heads, seemingly normal-sized human-like, which came out of the thing and went towards some cows in a pasture, while a strange green blue gleam bathed the place.
The young people were reportedly terrified when these characters put on a paralyzed cow a kind of cage and "measured it" with weird equipment. Other cows in nearby pastures were said to have been paralyzed too, i.e. motionless and quiet.
The young people reportedly fled but were obstructed by a force which drew them by the bottom of their bodies. One of them is said to have later developed marks on a leg similar to a strong sunstroke. One version specifies that as they fled, one of them felt something very embarrassing indeed, as he later told researchers. He said he felt something "tugging him from behind and pulling on his testicles". For a couple of days thereafter his rear parts were "red and sore as though from a mild sunburn"; which is not highly likely in England in the month of January.
A British ufology source mentions unspecified elements coming from investigator David Sankey which since had thrown doubts on the "validity" of the case.

[Ref. jb1:] JANET AND COLIN BORD:
The authors indicate that on the evening of January 27, 1978, four teenage poachers were in the Devils' Garden, an area of meadowland near Frodsham, Cheshire, when they saw a silver sphere that they took to be a malfunctioning satellite flying towards them over the River Weaver, trailing flames in its wake.
The sphere landed in undergrowth and sat motionless, making a noise like rushing wind. The poachers hid behind some bushes and watched in astonishment as the sphere began to glow bright blue.
Then a silver-suited figure emerged from it and gazed thoughtfully at some cows in a nearby field, which were standing still and silent as though paralyzed.
A second figure joined the first. Between them, they carried a "strange frame-like apparatus" into the field, placed it around one of the motionless cows and moved some struts up and down as though taking measurements.
Fearing they might be in line for the same treatment, the poachers fled the scene. One of them felt a force tugging him backwards by his genitals, which were sore and seemingly sunburnt for days afterwards.

In 1978, a group of teenagers came across a large dome-shaped object sitting in a field near the Devil's Garden in Frodsham. They saw "alien figures" examining cows in a field, using a "strange frame like apparatus". The cows were completely motionless and silent, as though they had been immobilized. After a few moments, the teenagers panicked and ran away. |

Here in Britain we have a very interesting and slightly similar case, which was reported in FSR 26/3 (1980) in the article Four men and a UFO: Terrifying ordeal Beside a Cheshire River. On the evening of January 27th, the four English youths (aged 17 - 19) saw a globe-shaped UFO land, thought by them to be about 15 ft. wide. From the globe appeared two seemingly normal-sized humanlike entites clad in silvery one-piece garb, who produced a sort of metal cage and captured a cow from a nearby herd. The cow, as though mesmerized - as it clearly was - just stood there impassively and the entities proceeded to fit the cage around her. At that point the youths, feeling it likely they might be in the cage too very shortly, took their heels. (As they fled, one of them felt something very embarrasing [sic] indeed, as he later told researchers. He said he felt something "tugging him from behind and pulling on his testicles"). For a couple of days thereafter his rear parts were "red and sore as though from a mild sunburn". (Not highly likely in England in the month of January). |
[Ref. js1:] JOHN SCHUESSLER:
John Schuessler indicates that on 1978/01/27, in England, in Frodsham, Cheshire, four men saw a silver balloon land near the river Weaver. A fuzzy purplish glow came out. They could not stand to look at the glow. Two beings wearing silver suits came out of the craft. Cows standing nearby were immobile, as if paralyzed. All four men had tingling sensations. One felt it in his testicles. All felt very sore when they reached home.
John Schuessler lists as effects: "Paralyzed animals, Purple light bothered eyes, Tingling, Soreness.
John Schuessler indicates that the source is "Alien Abductions, The British Catalogue."
[Ref. ar1:] ALBERT ROSALES:
Albert Rosales indicates in his catalogue that in Frodsham, Cheshire, England, on January 27, 1978, early, four men were out pouching in a field next to the River Weaver, when they sighted a silvery balloon like object float along the river and land. It emitted a strong purplish glow that made it hard to look at. Two figures of normal height emerged, they wore silvery suits and had lamps on their heads like miners, and these also glowed purple. Cows on a nearby field seemed to become paralyzed and unable to move. Using a metal cage the figures penned in one of the cows and seemed to measure it. The men then became frightened and ran from the area, as they ran they felt a strange tingling sensation around the groin area.
Albert Rosales indicates that the source is "Jenny Randles, Abduction."
[Ref. dj1:] DONALD JOHNSON:
Donald Johnson indicates that on January 27, 1978, four men were out pouching early in the morning in a field by the River Weaver in Fordsham, Cheshire County, England when they sighted a silvery balloon-like object float down along the course of the river and land on the bank. It emitted a strong purplish glow that made it hard to look at. Two figures of normal height emerged. They wore silvery suits and had miners lamps on their heads, and these glowed purple. Cows on a nearby field seemed to become paralyzed and unable to move. Using a metal cage, the UFOnauts penned in one cow and seemed to measure it. The witnesses became frightened and ran from the area, and as they ran they felt a strange tingling sensation in their groins.

[Ref. rm1:] JENNY RANDLES AND ROBERT MOORE:
The authors indicate that "being engaged in poaching inevitably makes one wary of talking, but we did obtain a frightening tale from four young men who had been chasing pheasant early one evening on the banks of the River Weaver near Frodsham, Cheshire, in January 1978. Apparently they had seen a silver 'balloon' float over the surface of the water and land in the dark meadows before them. From cover, they watched as what they called 'astronauts', in silver suits with `miners' lamps' on their heads, got out and started to take undue interest in the grazing cattle. Terrified, the men watched as one paralyzed cow was allegedly placed in a cage and seemingly measured by some bizarre equipment. In panic they fled, but were impeded by a force that pulled at their lower regions. An eerie blue/green glow had permeated the area, and one man later developed marks not unlike strong sunburn on his leg. Without any doubt this would classify as a significant UFO sighting claim, although some have since questioned its validity."
The authors indicate that the source is "Four Young Men and a UFO", Randles, J., Whetnall, P., FSR Vol. 26 No. 3, 1980.
They add that "later investigations by researcher David Sankey have subsequently cast doubt on this claim," this being sourced as "David Sankey, personal communication October 2007."

One silver ball, about 20 feet across, was observed by four male witnesses, typical age 17, on a river for ten minutes. A humming sound was heard. Two humanoids, each wearing a silver coverall, were seen.
