Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

Compilers of stories of close encounters of the third kind indicate that on March 13, 1950, in Penon de los Banos, Mexico, a vessel said to be equipped with a powerful propeller landed, according to the newspaper of the next day.

A Martian came out, speaking English according to one source, Spanish according to another, and told a native that the cities of planet Mars are underground cities, and that Venus is very hot, wet, and dominated by flying reptiles. The martian announced that the Earth will be destroyed in the Third World War, and then colonized by the Martians.

It is said that a strong strong sulphur odor filled the air when the ship left, according to one source, or accompanied the Martian according to the other source.

Narratives:

[Ref. wb1:] DAVID F. WEBB AND TED BLOECHER:

In their catalogue, thew two ufologists indicate that on March 13, 1950, an object described as a 9 meter in diameter spaceship with a propeller, allegedly landed in Penon de Los Banos, Mexico. The pilot of the craft conversed in the Spanish language with the witness, telling that "they" will colonize the Earth after we destroy ourselves. An odor of sulphur was reportedly accompanying the UFO occupant.

The authors indicate that the story appeared in the newspapers El Universal for March 14, 1950 and The Durango Herald, March 19, 1950.

[Ref. bh1:] ROBERT E. BARTHOLOMEW AND GEORGE S. HOWARD:

The authors indicate that on March 13, 1950, in Penon de los Banos, Mexico, a ship said to be "equipped with a powerful propeller" landed.

A pilot came out and spoke English. This Martian told a native that cities on Mars were underground and Venus was very hot, humid, and overrun with flying reptiles.

He said Earth will destroy itself in World War III, and then Martians will colonize our planet.

A strong sulphur smell filled the air as the ship left.

The authors indicate that the source is the newspaper El Universal, of Mexico City, for March 14, 1950.

[Ref. ar1:] ALBERT ROSALES:

Albert Rosales indicates in his catalogue that in Peñon De Los Banos, Mexico, on March 13, 1950, at an unknown time, a Martian spaceship 9 by 6 meters in size, "equipped with a powerful propeller, and made of a metal which defies gravity" landed, and the pilot engaged one of the natives in conversation in perfect Spanish. Martian cities, he said, are underground. The Martians have found Venus too hot and humid, infested with flying reptiles; they will colonize Earth after we destroy ourselves in World War III. There was a strong odor of sulfur after the ship took off.

Albert Rosales indicates that the source is Humcat quoting newspaper sources.

[Ref. ud1:] "UFODNA" WEBSITE:

The website indicates that on 13 March 1950 in Penon De Los Banos, Mexico, there was a "Spaceship" equipped with propeller lands (9m diameter). "Pilot converses in Spanish language, message: they will colonize after we destroy, odor of sulphur."

And: "An nine meter in diameter object, described as a spaceship with a propeller, allegedly landed in Penon de Los Banos, Mexico on this day. The pilot of the craft conversed in the Spanish language with the witness. His message was that 'they' will colonize after we destroy ourselves. There was a reported odor of sulphur accompanying the presence of the UFOnaut."

And: "Close encounter with a craft and its occupants. One object, about 40 feet across, was observed. One being was seen. A Martian spaceship 9 x 6 meters in size, "equipped with a powerful propeller, and made of a metal which defies gravity" landed, and the pilot engaged one of the natives in conversation in perfect Spanish. Martian cities, he said, are underground. The Martians have found Venus too hot and humid, infested with flying reptiles; they will colonize Earth after we destroy ourselves in World War III. There was a strong odor of sulfur after the ship took off."

The website indicates the sources as: "Webb, David, HUMCAT: Catalogue of Humanoid Reports; Newspaper Clippings; Rosales, Albert Humanoid Sighting Reports Database".

Points to consider:

There does not seem to be any witness for this case. The original source not being quoted nor available, it is possible that the story was only a very obvious journalistic joke intended from the start to be understood as such.

It could have been a parody of the stories about Venusians from the United States, as the detail of the Martian speaking English to a native instead of speaking in his language would suggest.
