Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

FORT WORTH (TEXAS : USA)

A young woman was driving on a highway on the outskirts of Fort Worth, when a discoid object 8m diameter flew overhead. The witness stopped her car and waved at the object, which tilted, the occupants gesturing back. The silent object then moved off.

Points to consider:

Brinsley The Poer Trench, 8th Earl of Clancarty (1901 - 1995) is famous in ufology for being the founder and first editor of the Flying Saucer Review from 1956 to 1959. If I have never found that he "invented" stories, but I have to state the man was quite wacky in his interpretations and ideas - he believed for example in the arrival of a "new Adam", that the Earth is hollow, etc...

Of course the whole story might have been just a hoax. No primary source is known. Le Poer Trench being British, he is certainly not the first the witness reported to.

Unfortunately, I do not have any Fort Worth newspaper for 1947, and in the three dozen other Texan newspapers of 1947 I have, I found nothing on the case.

I am not sure that the precise date of July 4 given by Donald Johnson is certain; all other "copycats" of the Le Poer Trench story indicate only "1947".

We have a flying craft with human occupants waving back at a woman.

From 1939 and on, prototype helicopters were being used in the US, such as the Vought-Sikorsky VS-300; in which the pilot - here inventor Sikorsky - is very visible. Obsolete prototypes such as this one or later ones may have been still flying around.

Here are some helicopters flying in 1947 in the US:

Seibel YH-24.

USN Sikorsky Hos-1 in flight in January 1947.

Sikorsky H-5 of the US Army Air Force on 1947..

There were several other models, such as the Bell YR-13 who was an early version of the Famous Bell 47, etc.
