1930, somewhere at a beach, USA, boy and his brother:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

Author C. D. B. Bryan attended the famous 1992 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.I.) conference on alien abductions and UFOs.

In his 1995 book about the conference, he cites among other testimonies of alleged "abductees" that participated in the conference, the life-long alleged abductions of Carol Dedham, then 43-year-old manager of the horse farm of Alice, Maryland, USA.

Carol did not have any hypnotic regression sessions, she says she consciously remembers weird events she experienced since 1954. She also mentions weird experiences of others in her family, the first dating back to 1930. for example her father had told her she had been missing for several hours several times when she was a child.

Her father told her that when he was 12, in 1930, he went down to the beach with his elder brother to play. Less than an hour later, Carol's father stooped "to pick up a particularly interesting seashell from the sand." When he stood up again, "everything about him was hazy and his brother was gone."

Surprised that anyone could run off and hide so quickly, he wandered along the beach for a while alone. What seemed like moments later, he turned around and saw his brither behind him. He, too, appeared to be afraid and upset. What had happened is that both of them had bent over to pick up a shell at the same time, and both had straightened up to find the other gone.

"Neither of the boys would have thought much about the incident had it not been for the fact that when they returned home, instead of having been absent a little more than an hour as they had thought, they had been gone three hours. Also, as they had not gotten back on time, their mother had called the police, who had thoroughly searched the beach the boys had been playing on and reported back they were nowhere to be seen.

1930

USA, Maryland

According to Carol Dedham, the middle-aged manager of a horse farm in Maryland, USA, both she and her family have had abduction experiences dating back several decades.

At the age of twelve, in 1930, her father went down to the beach with his elder brother to play. Less than an hour later, Carol's father stooped "to pick up a particularly interesting seashell from the sand." When he stood upright again, "everything about him was hazy and his brother was gone." Surprised that anyone could run off and hide so quickly, he wandered along the beach for a while alone. What seemed like moments later, he turned around and saw the other boy behind him. He, too, appeared to be afraid and upset. It fell out that both of them had bent over to pick up a shell at the same time, and both had straightened up to find the other gone!

"Neither of the boys would have thought much about the incident had it not been for the fact that when they returned home, instead of having been absent a little more than an hour as they had thought, they had been gone three times that long. What's more, when they hadn't gotten back on time, their mother had called the police, who had thoroughly searched the beach the boys had been playing on and reported back they were nowhere to be seen." (See C. D. B. Bryan's "Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind" but unfortunately I don't have the book to hand to check the page number or year.) (thanks to Chris Aubeck)

Points to consider:

It goes without saying that this case is not strictly speaking a "close encounter of the 3rd kind" since neither UFO nor UFO occupant was seen by Carol's father and his brother. This kind of experience is classified as a close encounter of the fourth kind. The event apparently unrelated to UFOs is potentially related to UFOs by the fact that Carol claimed she and other members of her family had many subsequent contacts with extraterrestrials.

I do not feel justified in giving an opinion on this second-hand reported alleged experience. I note, however, that in the case of Carol Dedham, contrary to many alleged "abductees", she remembers such episodes consciously, without having resorted to hynose sessions previously, we are told.

If it were absolutely necessary to attempt a trivial explanation for the 1930 incident, I would suggest that the two boys at the same time, on the beach, lost consciousness because of toxic gases of decaying algae, and regained consciousness later because maybe the wind had quickly dissipated these gases.
