September 1906, Syracuse, New Jersey, USA, to Mars, George Sackville Leyson:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

A ufologist discovered a newspaper article which later entered a "UFO chronology". The Emery County Progress, of Emery County, Utah, USA, for September 15, 1906, told that one Sackville G. Leyson, president of Society for Psychical Research, stated he recently went to Mars thanks to his psychic powers, while his body remained home.

The man told that after 40 minutes of psychic travel, when he approached Mars, it resembled a large fiery sphere and it seemed to him that he was on the verge of diving into a molten mass. Mars was "surrounded by blood red clouds mixed with others of greenish hue."

The astral traveller then explains that there are two tribes on Mars. The tall ones are so high that he only came up to their knees and the other so small that they only came up to my knees. They had no clothes on, they were covered with hairs. The tallest tribe "had huge ears, a nose like a lion, and only one eye in the middle of the forehead. Their lungs do not move up and down in breathing but expand crosswise". They had "houses made of rock".

As for the little ones, they "had web feet and slipped over a moss like substance as though skating. They could walk up perpendicular walls like flies." They had "two eyes, one in each temple", "no noses but there was a hole in each cheek." They "lived in holes in the ground or rocks."

The Martian trees seemed made of rubber, none was in decay, and there was a substance which resembled snow but was not cold and was easy and soft to walk on. In a deep ravine, he "men working with some sort of machines which was guiding lights across transparent rocks. The rays seemed to be reflected clear to the atmosphere on earth".

Mr. Leyson said he will "go to Mars again when he has an audience of scientists and psychologists to testify to the truth of his statement."

[Ref. go1:] GODELIEVE VAN OVERMEIRE:

The Belgian ufologist indicates that in September 1906, on "Mars (first man there...)!!", the following story was published:

"VISITS PLANET OF MARS; FINDS ONE-EYED GIANTS"

"Syracuse (N Y) Man Brings Back Queer Account of Our Nearest Terrestrial Neighbor"

"Syracuse N Y - Sackville G. Leyson, president of the Society for Psychical Research, says he recently paid a visit to Mars. Although the distance is 141000000 miles his spirit went there there and back in 40 minutes while his body lay in his residence. In describing his visit he said 'When I approached Mars it looked like a big globe of fire and it seemed as if I were about to plunge into a molten mass. It was surrounded by blood red clouds mixed with others of greenish hue. "There are two tribes of people on Mars - one so large I only came up to their knees and the other so small that they only came up to my knees. None wore clothing. All were covered with hair. "The largest species had huge ears, a nose like a lion, and only one eye in the middle of the forehead. Their lungs do not move up and down in breathing but expand crosswise."

"'The little men lived in holes in the ground or rocks. The larger ones had houses made of rocks. The little ones had web feet and slipped over a moss like substance as though skating. They could walk up perpendicular walls like flies. 'The small ones have two eyes, one in each temple.'"

"They had no noses but there was a hole in each cheek. The trees looked as if made of rubber. I saw none decayed. There was a substance which looked like snow but which was not cold and was easy and soft to walk on. Down in a deep chasm I saw men working with some sort of machines which was guiding lights across transparent rocks. The rays seemed to be reflected clear to the atmosphere on earth " Mr Leyson says he will go to Mars again when he has an audience of scientists and psychologists to testify to the truth of his statement.

She indicates that the source is the Emery County Progress (Emery County, Utah) for September 15, 1906, via the anomalistic list – Chris Aubeck.

Points to consider:

The "Proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research" in Great Britain for 1892, on page 417, mention a member named George Leyson, of Southwick, Brighton. In the Ellis Island US immigration file, I found that one George Sackville Lyson arrived in the US in 1901 at the age of 47. These are the only trace I found of the man who went to Mars by thought.

The only interests in the story is that it shows how a 1900's man would imagine the Martians, and that "contactees", "channelers" and "astral travellers" of the 1950's were somehow not entirely a "new" item.
