Subject: ufo report July 1967 I worked and lived in Northern Manitoba, Canada from 1949 until 1987. In 1987 I moved to Brandon, Manitoba to take a government job in Social Housing (housing based upon income). During the course of my work in Northern Manitoba (all of the remote settlements) I had occasion to work with Dene, Inuit, Cree and Metis people on a daily basis. I travelled about 100-days a year and often spent 2-or-3 days in the communities I was serving. In my spare time I often discussed indigenous place names, herbal medicine, stone technology, hunting, language, unusual animals, mythology and strange experiences. Needless to say I listened to countless stories and heard of many encounters seldom heard by the general public. I was studying the Cree language (Algonquin group) at the time and was particularly interested in the names for lakes, rivers, fish, animals & etc. At one community where I was preparing to sell some of the government housing to the occupants I enlisted the assistance of a small work crew to repair the homes and bring them up to code standards. One day at lunch time we were talking about commercial fishing and an unusual variety of pike found only in the local lake (silver and without banding or spots). Having been a commercial fisherman in my youth I offered some suggestions about propagating the unusual variety of pike and perhaps starting a unique sport fishing venture to bring tourists into the area and provide jobs. After a little prodding one of the elders spoke of another unusual experience and that there had been fourteen witnesses. The event happened on or about July 6-7-8 in 1967 and I later spoke with perhaps five-or-six of the first person observers. In 1967 there were NO newspapers, television, radio, roads or media access within 150-kilometres of the subject village. As it was July the children and young people were home from Residential School for the summer and everyone was employed or busy getting nets, boats and fish boxes ready for the late fall start for freshwater commercial fishing. The local people were not caught up in publications of 'UFO flaps" or the hyperbole of that time. They made their living from the Land as they had done so for many generations: trapping and fishing. The actual sighting of the UFO lasted about 35-minutes. As noted there were 14-witnesses. The estimated (paced off) distance from the observers was approximately 220-yards. It was about 6:00 in the early evening, the sun was still high (Northern latitude); the wind was absolutely calm. The group inside were taking turns playing hearts (card game) while two of the older sons were outside building fish boxes (to ice & ship the catch to the co-operative). The 'vehicle' sat motionless over the lake in front of the cabin (10+/- metres above the water) for about half an hour. The card players inside the cabin had been alerted of the strange apparition by the young men building boxes in front of the boat shed nearby. What is absolutely remarkable about this event was the 'closeness' of the vehicle; the incredible description given by the witnesses; that fact that the vehicle made 'no sound' and, furthermore, did not even disturb the glassy surface of the lake even though it was only metres from the surface. About half of the observers were quite terrified of the 'vehicle'; several were quite curious but cautious. One walked about 100-metres closer to the object to 'get-a-better-look!' The individual that gave the most complete description (and drew a very good diagram) was a carpenter. His attention to detail (plus, he was totally unafraid) was excellent. For about half the time he ALSO viewed the UFO through 8X binoculars and walked down to the edge of the lake. His sons stopped him from taking a canoe to paddle beneathe the vehicle! His observations were the cold-sober, analytical viewpoint of a tradesman familiar with measuring distances and dimensions as well as noting form, colour and construction details. I have been reading UFO accounts (having seen three very unusual sightings in my 65-year life ) since the early 1950's when I grew up as a child on the coast of Hudson Bay. I have NEVER read or heard of an encounter so vivid, so long and so close as this one that was told to me. I am afraid that the detail of this sighting would go on for pages-and-pages. Suffice to say that the isolation of the viewers; their unfamiliarity with any of the literature or media of the time; the total absense of 'fear or awe' in some of the observers; the technical description offered by the carpenter; the testimony of the other witnesses all add up to a very convincing story. None of the individuals involved had ever spoken about the event to anyone; the congruity from one account to another was very very tight. There was also a spectacular "OZ Factor" observation that really impressed me .... it was an observation having to do with the detail that could only be noticed by a long time traveller of the lake. As I have said; this story is really much longer and has some rather unpleasant aspects that unfolded later. In a strange way I think a distant death was somehow related to the event as well. These events are not always totally innocuous. There can be a "don't-care-attitude" exhibited by these 'vehicles' that may-or-may-not be deliberate (if indeed it is some technology). I still have the diagram that the carpenter made for me. I was fortunate enough to visit the family and group almost a year later and brought the diagram with me and had them all retell their story. When I brought out the genntleman's sketch he looked at it critically for a few minutes and then said: "I forgot something! There were joints in the centre ring (he had observed it through binoculars from about 120-metres)!" He then added the 'missing joints' in the central part of the disk. There is more should you be interested. [Firstname] [Name] |
