Here is a non-UFO story of which I was the witness :

A few years ago (in 88, 89, perhaps), during an extremely cold winter, we drove by night on the road between Lyon and Roanne. While coming out of a turn, we saw an enormous luminous disc against the background of the sky. At the time, our excitment was such as it was impossible for us to estimate its dimensions.

We continued to drive in spite of the begging of a friend who believed to "feel something" until the moment when we understood what really occurred while passing in the locality at the top of which the phenomenon occurred. The luminous disc was actually only the very sharp light of a gas pipeline on fire, projected on a ceiling of very low clouds by the round mouth of an urban well.

If we had not passed by the locality in question, we would have believed in good faith in the presence of a motionless and perfectly photographiable UFO. I suppose that many people were victims of this illusion.
